SNELLVILLE — A roadside sign near the entrance of the Mountain Cove neighborhood in Centerville reads, “MAY YOU BE BLESSED.” But on Friday, several of the letters had fallen sideways. The obscured message
was fitting for a morning when residents were reeling from a rare shooting in the close-knit leafy subdivision of split-level homes. Gwinnett County police said 25-year-old Michael Silva was killed while allegedly breaking into a neighbor’s house. The homeowner, who police said was “well within” his rights to fire, and his
wife awoke to the sound of the apparent burglary attempt around 4 a.m. The intruder had used a ladder to climb onto the roof. “The husband retrieved his firearm and went to investigate the sounds,” Cpl. Deon Washington said in a news release. “When he went into the master

Gwinnett police chief Butch Ayers, who stopped by to visit with the recruits and homeowner, was proud. “I think it’s great. It’s a project they picked,” he said. “It’s just indicative of the quality of employees we have.” The recruits, who have another three weeks before they hit the streets for on-thejob training, arrived at McCpl. LAWRENCEVILLE — After a year of searching for work and worrying about her aging home, Bonnie McGaughey beamed Saturday afternoon as work was finally underway. “Happy doesn’t described it,” she said. “Pleased, blessed, humbled.” Recruits from the Gwinnett County Police Department’s 95th academy class were painting the house on Creekwood Cove off Ga. Highway 20 as part of the local Habitat for Humanity’s “A Brush with Kindness” initiative. McGaughey applied for assistance from the program, which helps struggling homeowners with repairs, but she didn’t realize police recruits would be the workers. She started to tear up in the driveway watching them. “It’s stunning,” she said. “I
Jeff and Catie Francoeur were hardly more than kids themselves when they got involved with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta through the Braves 12 years ago. The two Parkview grads remained involved even after Jeff went on to play for other MLB teams, but were back wearing their Braves’ gear Friday for the team’s annual Christmas in July event at Scottish Rite. “Seeing the smiles, seeing the things that excite them, that’s the best,” said Francoeur with a familiar grin. “Not so much us, but Homer, Santa Claus, the toys. Going to other teams, we kind of stole the Christmas in July concept. It’s such a great chance to give back. It’s great that the organization donates the toys and has us come out here. “It’s one of those things where I don’t think you have to convince anybody to
