Are Gwinnett’s cities trying to comply with a federal mandate requiring them to provide election materials in Spanish? Well, it depends on who you ask. The Department of Justice informed Gwinnett County officials in December that they had to comply with Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act, which requires communities that have large numbers of voters who speak the same non-English language to provide election information in that language. That requirement includes the cities as well. The immediate question is whether the cities, whose elections this fall will be the first held in the county since that requirement was announced, and the county are doing enough so far to be in compliance with the law. Police believe they’ve arrested the man who drove a backhoe into a downtown Lawrenceville gun shop last month. Atlanta resident Brandon Andrew Chaney, 25, was booked into Gwinnett County jail on Thursday at 11:32 a.m. on charges of loitering and prowling, entering auto, theft by taking and burglary, according to Brandon the jail log.
