New Georgia laws go into effect today BY CURT YEOMANS

While Georgia’s new hands-free driving law has attracted most of the attention when it comes to new state laws that go into effect today, there are plenty of other new laws that Gwinnett residents need to
keep an eye on. An open door to tighter local restrictions on fireworks, and a new way for the state to collect unpaid toll fines and revised fines for passing a school bus stopped to pick up kids are some of the new laws that go into effect this weekend. One of the big laws
now in effect may be the fireworks bill, House Bill 419, because it could mean shoot fireworks any day of the year atmosphere that has existed since fireworks became legal in Georgia in 2015 could be curtailed. The bill lets cities and counties restrict fireworks use through general noise ordinances. The only ex-

As Lawrenceville youth Esther Ayannusi strapped an oxygen tank to her back at the Gwinnett County Fire Academy in Dacula on Wednesday, she carefully
made sure she followed the directions from academy recruits exactly. She and about 24 other Gwinnett County High School students also got to ride in a fire engine, use a fire hose to spray down the side of a scorched training building and learned how to

The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office has dismissed all charges against a Snellville woman who was arrested earlier this week after her mother was found dead from stab wounds. On Monday, Jacquelyn Craft, 35, called 911 to report that her mother, 65-yearold Evelyn Craft, had stabbed herself to death, according to Gwinnett Police Sgt. Jake Smith. “Responding officers found the circumstancJacquelyn es suspicious and conCraft tacted Homicide Unit detectives,” Smith said. “Detectives and the Crime Scene Unit investigated further and found evidence which contradicted Jacquelyn Craft’s story.” A day later, the younger Craft was charged with aggravated assault and felony murder and was transported to the Gwinnett County Jail without bond. On Friday, however, Craft was released after the District Attorney’s Office announced they had administratively dismissed the charges, meaning Craft’s warrants were dismissed and she is no longer charged with a crime. “(The case) is still under investigation,” Gwinnett County Chief Assistant District Attorney Dan Mayfield said. “(On Tuesday,) we were at the point where we were confident we had reached a probable cause standard for her arrest, but later, (Gwinnett County Medical Examiner Carol) Terry met with us and presented us with scientific evidence that indicated that we didn’t actually have probable cause. “Once we had that information indicating the cause may be a suicide, we didn’t feel comfortable having (Craft) in custody. Some jurisdictions call this a ‘dead docket’ but we don’t for (technical) reasons.” Smith said Gwinnett detectives are continuing to investigate the case as a suspicious death.
