SUWANEE — With a long line of speakers and applause to support them, parents of children proposed to move from Sugar Hill Elementary School to Sycamore Elementary School were among the most vocal Thursday night. Proximity to a landfill in addition to lower test scores were the main arguments for residents to challenge proposed boundaries Gwinnett County Public Schools has laid out in the latest redistricting plans. Jon Morris, who is a parent at Sugar Hill Elementary School, said he chose his current home on a warm sunny day because he smelled the landfill near Sycamore Elementary. A contingent of neighbors from the Oaks at Lanier subdivision turned out to support Morris’ sentiment. Another resident, Brandon Hart, said when his family was house shopping, his wife and three sons found one they loved. But when they were told it was zoned for Sycamore, they decided against it. “If all these places don’t want their kids to go to Sycamore, why not address the problems at Sycamore?” Hart told the board. “With the ratings that Sugar Hill Elementary has, it’s a better elementary, and for that reason we were worried about our home values.” So Hart and his family decided to rent a house to remain in the Sugar Hill Elementary zone. That was the case two years ago for Jess and Nate Baumgart, who both had “travel around the world” at the top of their lists. After two years of saving, researching, planning and preparing, the couple’s dream is about to become a reality.
