Seven-year-old Noah Gomez smiled shyly at the newborn bundled in front of him, his sister’s pink toes curling as he touched the bottoms of her feet. Enamored with the baby’s tiny appendages, the boy’s calm was quickly broken as his brother Jasiah, 6, turned to their mother. “Why is she so red?” the younger boy asked, concerned with Aarya’s coloring. Laughing, Lawrenceville residents Hardip Gomez and her husband, James, explained to their four boys that the baby’s redness would fade in the upcoming days; after all, she was barely more than 12 hours old. At 1:35 a.m. Monday, the Gomez family welcomed its fifth child into the world at Gwinnett Medical Center, marking the county’s first baby of the new year. With four boys ranging in age from three to nine years old, Aarya is Hardip and James’ first girl. She also marks the first granddaughter in the family. “We’re still in shock because we were kind of in denial as far as having a girl,” Hardip said, laughing. “I keep saying

There is one thing that was rarely brought up at the ceremony though: history. As Newton — the first black person to serve as mayor in any Gwinnett city — and new Norcross Councilmen Chuck Paul
