Officials: Northside-GMC merger near approval BY ANDY MILLER

Georgia Health News

After years of delay, the merger between Northside Hospital and Gwinnett Health System may be close to becoming reality. Health care industry officials say the deal is close to approval by the Federal Trade Commission. That approval may come within

a month or even sooner, say the officials, who are not associated with Northside or Gwinnett and who spoke to GHN on condition of anonymity. Both Northside and Gwinnett spokespeople said Tuesday that they were not aware of any FTC decision. The federal agency was affected by the recent partial shutdown of

government operations. The mega-deal of nonprofits Northside and Gwinnett was once forecast to close in 2016. Northside operates hospitals in Canton and Cumming as well as its flagship hospital in Sandy Springs, which it says delivers more babies than any other U.S. hospital. It’s also among the state’s top providers of

surgical services. The deal would create a mega-system across the northern suburbs of Atlanta into populous Gwinnett County. The potential deal was originally announced in 2015, with a projected completion date of early the following year. The state attorney general’s office approved the

proposed deal in mid-November 2017. Afterward, Northside said the combined system could start running in early 2018. The overall length of time that the NorthsideGwinnett merger has taken — since 2015 — has baffled experts. “One has to wonder how the feds can approve a $70 billion CVS-Aetna deal

yet delay the NorthsideGwinnett transaction,’’ said Chris Kane, a consultant with Progressive Healthcare. Gwinnett Medical Center, whose parent company is Gwinnett Health System, operates hospitals in Lawrenceville and Duluth. If the Northside deal is

Man killed in shooting at Days Inn BY ISABEL HUGHES isabel.hughes@gwinnettdailypost.com

A 28-year-old Snellville man was killed in a shooting at the Days Inn along Glenn Club Drive near Stone Mountain early Tuesday morning. Just after midnight, several guests at the hotel called 911 to report shots fired, police said. There, responding officers found Ronald Horton Jr. dead in a second-floor hotel room. Marijuana and cash were located at the scene. “Detectives believe three suspects forced entry into the room, fired shots and fled the scene on foot,” said Cpl. Michele Pihera, spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Police Department. “Our detectives are working with not only the hotel staff but also the guests to see if we can identify exactly who these See SHOOTING, Page 7A

The experience of a lifetime for the Meadowcreek football program got even better for head coach Jason Carrera at Monday’s Super Bowl LIII Opening Night. Thanks to the NFL and the Atlanta Falcons, Carrera was one of four high school and youth coaches presented with two tickets to Sunday’s big game during media night festivities for the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots. “It’s really a once-in-alifetime opportunity,” Carrera said. “It’s a big deal. Even though it’s in your town, not many people get the opportunity to go.” Carrera was surprised with the tickets Monday night, when he was a special guest of the Falcons at the event, hosted at State Farm Arena. Even when he was called on stage to be recognized with the other coaches, the 52-year-old had no idea it involved game tickets. “I was really just amazed,” Carrera said. Meadowcreek already was selected a few weeks ago for a unique opportunity that takes place Friday. The Mustang players are the centerpiece of CBS’ broadcast run-through at MercedesBenz Stadium.
