Train hits tractor-trailer in downtown Norcross FROM STAFF REPORTS A train hit a tractor-trailer trying to cross the tracks in downtown Norcross on Friday night. The incident happened on Thrasher Street at Holcomb Bridge Road at around 7 p.m. Norcross Police said a northbound train was not able to stop in time and ended up slamming into the moving truck, slicing through it. Sgt. Eric Butynski said that while truck driver was trying to cross the tracks, he was not doing so in an effort to beat the train before it could get to the intersection. “The truck driver was cited for improper use of a controlled access highway,” Butynski said. The truck was loaded with home furnishings and personal belongings that were in the process of being moved. There was a large debris field caused by the impact of the train. Norcross police said there are several signs posted prohibiting commercial vehicles from traveling along Holcomb Bridge Road in the city. Officers told FOX 5 Atlanta that they have worked five crashes in five years at this crossing. There were no injuries reported initially, however, paramedics did end up assessing the train conductor for a minor complaint, Gwinnett Fire Cpt. Tommy Rutledge said. No train cars were derailed from the tracks as a result of the accident and there was no immediate hazmat threat, Rutledge said. Rail service in the area was stopped and the train was blocking all crossings within the city of Norcross, forcing traffic in the area to be rerouted for several hours. Butynski said the report on the incident did not specify where the truck driver was headed.

Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., expressed frustration with the process, pointing to the lack of an agreement on the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, as an example of the breakdown. “It’s time to stop the theatrics and get to the busi-

ness of governing,” Isakson said in a statement. “For too long we have been kicking the can down the road on an operating budget for our government. A continuing resolution is not the path I would choose for good governing. “Now we can’t even put aside partisan
