He discussed the ARC’s work on livable centers, addressing aging issues, transportation, education and homeland security during the address. “Gwinnett’s the only place in this region that has a hand in every one of those conversations,” Armstrong said. “I’m proud to say that, not only in security, but in transportation, aging services and everything we do, everywhere I go, the Gwinnett people are almost always the smartest people in the room.”

Temps in 70s don’t deter people from Snow Mountain

Saturday marked a first for 7-year-old Seneca, S.C., resident Reagan Wilbur. While the precocious little girl had ridden sleds and tubes on snow before, she’d never done it away from the hilly property of her family’s home. Since the weather has been unseasonably warm — it was in the mid-70s on Saturday — and since her parents are originally from Athens, they decided to bring her to the one place they knew she’d enjoy a wintry atmosphere this weekend. They brought her to Snow Mountain — at Stone Mountain. “We got a little snow where

Gwinnett preparing to remember King’s life on MLK holiday BY CURT YEOMANS

Eighty-eight and 49. They might seem like two random numbers, but they have greater significance when they are looked at through the prism of Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. King would have turned 88 this year. At the same time, 2017 will mark the 49th anniversary of his assassination.

They may be two numbers, but this year, 88 and 49 mark bookends for the life of a man whose message has reverberated through the decades. And Gwinnettians will come together on Monday to celebrate that life. The most visible sign of Gwinnett’s commemoration of King’s life may be the United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County Inc.’s 17th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration in Lawrenceville.

This year’s theme will be “Striving for Excellence: Awareness, Education and Service.” Tying into that theme, recently retired Gwinnett County Public Schools Associate Superintendent Dr. Frances Davis will be the parade’s grand marshal. “Early in her career, Dr. Frances Davis made an impact on the lives of children and has continued to expand that impact throughout a 30 year career,” The United Ebony

Society of Gwinnett said in a statement when it announced Davis’ selection in December. The event will begin with a 25-minute program at 11 a.m., at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center’s Fallen Heroes Memorial, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. Parade participants will then begin lining up at 11:30 a.m., and the parade will then begin at noon at The Central Gwinnett High School Black Knight Band march-
