DULUTH— Jean Forrester has been cooking ever since she was tall enough to see over the edge of the stove. The Buford native grew up cooking dinner for her brother and two sisters every night because her mother worked. Forrester said even though she’s been cooking for years, she still enjoys learning new tips and recipes. That’s why she attended last night’s Taste of Home Cooking School at the Gwinnett Center for her tenth consecutive year. “I really learn a lot here, and I love the redheaded host because she really knows how to put this on. She’s hilarious and friendly with everyone. My favorite part of her show is the games. When somebody wins, we stand up and shout,’I love food,’” Forrester said. “I really enjoy the whole experience. I like the vendor show and the tastings. My favorite was the honey barbecue wings. They were really good, and I’m very picky with my food because I cook a lot, so I know.” The 10th Annual Taste of Home Cook-

Senate hopefuls tout tax relief, responsiveness By Kristi Reed kristi.reed@gwinnettdailypost.com
With little more than a week to go before the Nov. 4 election, Democrat Timothy Swiney and Republican P.K. Martin are hard at work hoping to sway undecided voters to their side. Swiney, a real estate broker, and Martin, an insurance agent, are both confident they can well represent the residents of District 9. “I think what sets me apart is that I have a proven record of being somebody who listens to the problems of the people,” Martin said. Martin explained he was presented with tough problems during his time as a Lawrenceville councilman and was able to work with all parties involved to reach solutions. “I think I am someone who is really good at finding the common ground,” he See SENATE, Page 8A
Diva foundation helps Shiloh students attend homecoming By Keith Farner keith.farner@gwinnettdailypost.com
SNELLVILLE — Hair, makeup, nails and dresses will be possible on Saturday for three Shiloh High students who have never attended homecoming. And it’s all because of the generosity of another high school student whom they had never met. Kennedy Watson, who attended Shiloh Elementary and Shiloh Middle, but now is a
senior at Woodward Academy, created a foundation called “A Diva in the Making,” which is designed to reward girls for being smart and active in the community. Watson said she was bullied as a youngster, and created the foundation to be, “a slap in the face to those bullies who said it’s not cool to be smart.” “This foundation is giving them the confidence to step out and say it’s OK to step out,” Watson said. “It’s so cool to
see a teenager do such a good act.” This is the second year of Watson’s foundation, and she hopes to expand it in college. Woodward students who were involved in the service leadership board donated dresses for service leadership hours. Nail treatment is donated by Ray Baby Nails, hair styling is by J. Spot Salon, while makeup is by MyChoSee DIVA, Page 8A

The Shiloh students were nominated by a teacher and were selected because they’ve earned a 3.2 grade-point average and displayed other high character traits. The foundation will provide dresses, hair, makeup and nail treatment for homecoming on Saturday. (Staff Photo: Keith Farner)
