County may see bus rapid transit Commuters board a Gwinnett County Transit bus headed for Lawrenceville at the Transit Transfer Center at Gwinnett Place Mall on Monday. County commissioners heard an update on Gwinnett’s Transit Development Plan on Tuesday. The unfinished plan appears to favor bus rapid transit, but county officials didn’t rule out the possibility of light rail in the long-term. (Staff Photo: Curt Yeomans)

Bus rapid transit on roads such as Satellite

appears to be a key part of the plan, but Chapman
didn’t rule out rail being in Gwinnett’s future as well. “On the high capacity side, financially it is a more reasonable option for us,” Chapman said. “Given our population density and our job density, at this point it seems like a more appropriate

Hours-long standoff ends peacefully BY ISABEL HUGHES isabel.hughes@gwinnettdailypost.com
A SWAT standoff that lasted nearly six hours ended peacefully Tuesday afternoon. Gwinnett police and SWAT surrounded a home on Tuggle Road near Buford in response to a person who was barricaded inside. According to Gwinnett County Police Department Cpl. Wilbert Rundles, officers were attempting to make contact with a wanted person who was in a house near Phillips State Prison. The incident did not involve the prison in any way, and police had arrived to serve a warrant at the home around 9:40 a.m. No injuries were reported.

What began as an idea of owning a business together for Lawrenceville residents Glenn and Carol Mullison has transformed into an opportunity to help the community with sweet treats and fundraising. The Mullisons began to look for ways to open a business together, finally settling on a Kona Ice truck. “Carol was a paralegal for more than 25 years and was getting tired of it, and I was a contractor getting stressed
out,” Glenn Mullison said. “We wanted to do something together, and we looked online and found Kona Ice. We loved the idea of it and the company vision of giving back to the community.” Kona Ice is a mobile shaved-ice truck company that features a tiki hut top, self-serve flavors and tropical tunes radiating out of the vehicle. One of the company’s missions is giving back, and it has with its more than 1,000 trucks giving more than $50 million to local communities in the past decade. The Mullisons donated more than $8,500 over the
past year to schools, parks and community programs. With popular flavors like blue raspberry and tiger blood — a mixture of cherry and coconut syrup — the couple can be seen selling frozen treats in parks around the Gwinnett County area. “It’s awesome compared to things I’ve done in the past,” Mullison said. “It’s wonderful because everyone there is excited to see you. From the kids to the adults, it makes a day at the park more fun.” Beginning with the opening of Kona Ice of Lawrenceville in March 2017, the couple has made it a habit to
visit parks and start developing partnerships with schools. “We went around during teacher workdays last year and gave away free Konas to teachers to try and get our brand out there,” Mullison said. “We wanted to help them out with fundraising and got a lot of positive feedback.” On March 10, the Mullisons and their tropically designed Kona Ice truck stopped at Baggett Elementary School for the school’s international festival. “We gave away around 250
