A new residential development with 237 town homes on Buford Highway in unincorporated Duluth got the green light from county commissioners on Tuesday.

Commissioners unanimously approved Parkland Communities Inc.’s request to rezone 39.08 acres on the 4300 block of Bu-

ford Highway from single-family residential and general business zonings to town home residential for the Berkeley Township community.

The property is surrounded by the automobile business, as well as other commercial properties, a trailer park and residential subdivisions.

“We do believe it’s a good transition to go with the town homes,” Mitch Peevy, who filed

the rezoning application for Parkland Communities, told commissioners.

Margaritaville at Lanier Islands releases rebranding details

These drinks are some of the beverage options that will be available at restaurants in the soon-to-open Margaritaville at Lanier Islands attraction on Lake Lanier.

Paradise Beach and Water Park will feature sand brought in from Florida on the beach, as well as an expanded water park that has a Family Fun Zone, a volleyball court and a zipline ride called Thunderbolt Triple Zip where guests can ride 50 feet along Paradise Beach.

Thatched roof palapas have been added so visitors can relax while watching music videos that will be shown on a five-story screen. Access to the beach will also now be free — except during special events, officials said.

Restaurants at the beach will include the Tiki Bar, Frank and Lola’s Pizzeria, and the Paradise Beach Cantina, which is taking over the old Gianni’s Italian Bistro and Pizzeria location.

The water park will also have a restaurant called The Shark Shack in its Family Fun Zone.

Meanwhile, LandShark Landing will be located on the opposite end of the shore from Paradise Beach.

Margaritaville officials describe it as “the ultimate playground for adults” with features that include a live entertainment stage, a new beach bar and fire pits.

There will be five restaurants located in LandShark Landing. The LandShark Bar and Grill will take over the former Sunset Cove Cafe and Club site, and the other restaurants include the

License to Chill Bar, L2C Grill, Feeding Frenzy Fried Shack, and Dog and Brews, which will serve gourmet hot dogs and local draft beer selections.

The Lanier Islands marina and docks have been turned into the Port of Indecision Marina, and Safe Harbor is also planning to offer campgrounds and a luxury RV Resort that is expected to open in the fall. A dry-stack facility is expected to open next year with 250 wet slips.

Safe Harbor is also planning to continue several longstanding events, with a Margaritaville twist now included, at the attraction, including foam parties, Volleyball Tuesdays, Cornhole Thursdays and full moon parties, as well as Magical Nights of Lights and Snow Tube Park in the winter.

The company said it is adding wine and margarita cruises that will depart from the Port of Indecision as well.

“We have ambitious plans to introduce even more amenities and events in future phases,” Campbell said.

“This destination will continue to evolve each year, creating the perfect balance of attractions, entertainment and lakeside relaxation.”

With a little over a week to go before its water park opens, Margaritaville at Lanier Islands is offering up some teasers about what visitors can expect this summer.

Lanier Islands and Safe Harbor Davelopment LLC announced earlier this year that the developer would be taking over the LanierWorld attraction at Lake Lanier and converting it to a Margaritaville theme. Among the new details announced Tuesday were features at the Paradise Beach and Water Park, LandShark Landing, the Port of Indecision Marina and camping.

“We’ve been very busy at Lanier Islands, working to build on what has already been created here while introducing some incredible new venues and developing exciting new activities,” Safe Harbor Development LLC president Darby Campbell said in a statement.

Visitors will get their first glimpse of Margaritaville on Lake Lanier looks like next week when the water park and Landshark Landing opens May 5.

A spokeswoman for the attraction said the other parts of the Jimmy Buffetinspired Margaritaville area, including Paradise Beach, are expected to open May 12 with a grand opening set to happen later on during the summer.

“Our goal is to support Lanier Islands’ position as a top all-season destination in the southeast, incorporating the Margaritaville lifestyle in ways that keep the fun going all year long,” Campbell said. “We look forward to welcoming guests soon and are confident those who visit Margaritaville at Lanier Islands will return again and again.”

was standing on her front porch bragging to her nephew about killing someone behind the Marco’s Pizza on Centerville Highway in Snellville.

“The caller advised that the male was supposedly driving the victim’s car, an older model black Honda Civic, and saw paperwork in the name of Robert Jesse Purcell being removed from the car,” a District Attorney’s Office news release said. “Officers responded to the Marco’s Pizza location to investigate the call and noticed several personal items in a parking space behind the business along with an apparent blood stain on the pavement.”

The manager told police that Purcell had not shown up for work that morning, which he said was unusual.

He also told police Purcell had been living out of his car behind the business for “some time.”

Surveillance video from nearby businesses showed that in the early morning of May 27, two men — Washington and his co-defendant, Tye Stewart — approached Purcell’s vehicle and, a short time later, appeared to place something in the trunk of the car.

They then drove off with the vehicle, which was found in the area of Hugh Howell Road and Highway 78 just inside DeKalb County.

“When (Gwinnett) officers responded to the area, they located Purcell’s 1997 black Honda Civic on the Hugh Howell Road exit ramp from Highway 78,” the release said. “Officers located Purcell’s body inside the trunk of the vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest and hand and several injuries to his head.”

The following day, Gwinnett police executed a warrant on Washington’s house, where, after a brief foot chase, they arrested him.

“After giving multiple stories, Washington eventually admitted to detectives that he and his co-defendant had woken the victim while he was sleeping in his car and robbed him at gunpoint,” the release said. “During the robbery, Washington shot Purcell, and he and his codefendant decided to place the body in the trunk. As they were moving Purcell’s body, it was apparent that he was still alive, so they slammed his head into the pavement at least twice to make sure he was dead.”

Though Washington tried to claim the shooting was in self-defense, he did admit that he initiated the confrontation, the District Attorney’s Office said. Washington’s phone also showed messages of him bragging to people about “shooting a man and taking his car.”

Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge Kathy Schrader, who presided over the case, sentenced Washington to a second life sentence to be served consecutively.

Exposure to DES may increase cancer risk Dear Dr. rOaCH: I have a follow-up question regarding the risk of cervical cancer from HPV and herpes. I have had cervical cancer and exposure to DES. You did not mention if this particular estrogen exposure is a risk factor, but I am wondering.

— M.M. ansWer: Diethylstilbestrol, or DES, is a synthetic estrogen, which was used mostly in the 1950s and 1960s to prevent premature birth and miscarriages. It was shown to be ineffective. Worse, in 1971, it was shown that DES increased the risk of breast cancer in women who were given it.

Worse still, the daughters born to women who had taken DES (called “DES daughters”) were at risk for an unusual cancer, called “clear cell cancer of the vagina and cervix.” (This is not the usual cervical cancer, which is almost always caused by HPV.) They usually developed this cancer in their teens and 20s.

However, women born to DES-treated mothers should continue to be screened for vaginal cancer their whole lives.

The risk of other cancers in DES daughters is a subject of debate. Although DES daughters do have increased risk of cervical abnormalities, there has been no clear increase in risk of the common form of cervical cancer. There also may be an increased risk for breast cancer. Due to the uncertainty, any woman born to a DES-treated mother should get lifelong, annual screening for vaginal and cervical cancer, discuss frequency of breast cancer with her provider (who needs to know about the DES exposure) and consider becoming part of the registry at https://tinyurl.com/DES-daughters.

Men born to DES-treated women do not have an increased risk for cancer, and granddaughters of DEStreated women do not have adverse effects, as far as is known.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a common type of lymphoma, and is curable most of the time, though unfortunately not always. NonHodgkin’s lymphomas are a mixed group of diseases, and in general, aggressive types often are curable, while the slower-growing ones can be treated but not cured. However, more and more, these cancers are being treated based not on how they look under a microscope but instead on the examination of the DNA of the tumor cells.

The prognosis depends on the exact type, and on how far advanced it is.

Following Jesus or president?

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” — Matthew 6:24 The verse refers to money, but in light of today’s debate about the unaccountable devotion many Christian leaders have for President Trump, it is not a stretch to apply it to their relationship with him.

Last week at Wheaton Cal College in Thomas Illinois, a number of Christian pastors and leaders gathered to discuss the future of “evangelicalism” in the Trump era. Some who were not there claimed it was a forum for Trumpbashing; some who were in attendance disagreed.

There is a conceit among some conservative Christians that God is only at work when a person they voted for is elected, and that the rest of the time He must be attending to other countries. “God showed up,” said Franklin Graham following Trump’s election. Scripture states that all authority comes from God and that “the king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord like channels of water; he turns it wherever he wants”(Proverbs 21:1).

That means that God also must have “shown up” when Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and every other president was elected. The Almighty does, in fact, have a different agenda than us earthlings, and sometimes He puts up leaders to judge people for their wicked behavior.

Long ago I stopped answering people’s questions about my denominational background for at least two reasons. The first is that I don’t want to be defined by a label, the meaning of which can mean different things to different people. The second reason is that I don’t want to be aligned with various causes and movements (spare me from movements) that have little or nothing to do with the God in whom I believe.

Which brings me to today’s “evangelicals.” If you do not identify as one, or if you are secular, can you define the term without a Google search? Probably not, but the word has invaded the culture much like “born again” (usually in quotes in newspaper stories) in the ’70s when Jimmy Carter publicly pronounced his second birth.

Evangelicals mostly voted for the church-going Carter in 1976, though not in 1980, preferring instead the nonchurch-going Ronald Reagan. I understand. It was more about policy than piety.

That brings me back to the debate within evangelical circles as to whether President Trump deserves the support, even adulation, even fawning, of some in their tribe.

I will leave that for now to those debating the issue and ask a more important question. What would happen in our culture, and especially in our politics, if all of those who call themselves evangelicals began obeying the commands of Jesus of Nazareth?

As I read the Scriptures, which evangelicals believe are infallible and inerrant, both Testaments place obedience as a top priority for believers.

If God is supreme and Jesus is Savior, doesn’t it follow that their commands and teachings should be paramount?

There is no expectation, much less any command, for believers to prop up a fallen world through government. It’s quite the opposite. What would be the world’s perception of evangelicals if they started obeying the commands of their true leader? Those commands are to love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you, feed the hungry (that’s personal, not government), clothe the naked, visit those in prison and care for widows and orphans.

Yes, some do these things, but not enough. Today, “evangelicals” are perceived by many as one more interest group attached to the Republican Party and especially President Trump.

Its members need to make a choice as to which one is their true “master.” They can’t serve both.

Facebook knows what about me?

A chat window opened on my computer screen. A Facebook “friend” I didn’t know began communicating with me.

“Happy birthday, Tom!” wrote the woman.

“Who told you it was my birthday?” I wrote back.

“You did, Tom. You provided that information when you joined Facebook.”

“I did?”

“Sure, Tom. The information you willingly provide to Facebook — combined with sophisticated tools that monitor your online usage patterns — gives Facebook a detailed understanding of who you are.”

“Why does Facebook care about who I am?”

“To make billions from advertisers, Tom! The more Facebook knows about your private life, the more that sellers can custom-tailor advertisements. And, boy, has Facebook been busy learning about you.”

“What does Facebook know about me?”

“Based on information you submitted willingly, Facebook knows your full name, marital status, gender, age, birthday and several of your interests. Every time

“Your location, Tom. If you have the Facebook app on your phone and location tracking is turned on, Facebook will know exactly where you are, where you’ve been and can even determine where you may be going.”

“That’s unsettling, but why is my location information relevant?”

“Well, Tom, if you visit a particular store, don’t be surprised when you see several ads on your Facebook page that promote that store’s products. What many people do not know is that Facebook can track you even when you’re not using Facebook.”

“How is that possible?”

“Take your credit card purchases, Tom. Facebook collaborates with data brokers who monitor your credit card usage. Facebook then compares your purchases against data it already has to further refine your advertising profile.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“The Times explains how it works, Tom: ‘If you buy a burrito with your credit card, Facebook could know about the transaction, match it with a credit card that you added to Facebook or Messenger

and start showing you ads for indigestion medication.’ “ “It gives me indigestion to learn that advertisers know when I have indigestion!”

“Facebook also knows the people who you know, Tom. After all, you gave the company permission to download the email addresses and phone numbers stored in your smartphone.”

“It’s scary that Facebook knows so much about who I am, where I’m located and who I know.”

“It’s true, Tom. You need to be cautious about information you provide to Facebook and other online services. You should learn how to adjust your Facebook settings to protect your privacy. In any event, happy birthday.”

“Thanks for the birthday wishes, but can you please remind me who you are and how we became Facebook friends?”

“Sorry, Tom. I prefer to keep that information private.”

Liberal ideas run wild in California

You don’t want to live in my state.

Sure, it’s beautiful. The weather is great.

Most people who live here are nice, good, successful, talented, smart — except when it comes to politics and voting. That’s when a majority of Californians fall somewhere between crazy and suicidal.

For several decades, the liberal Democrats that my fellow Californians keep electing to state and local offices have done their best to turn our paradise into hell for conservatives.

Everyone knows about our criminally high taxes, idiotic environmental regulations, fiscal irresponsibility, unsolvable homeless problem and our Welcome Wagon policy toward illegal immigrants.

Lately, we’ve created sanctuary cities and become a sanctuary state. You’d think it couldn’t get worse out here on the Left Coast.

But the stupidity of our liberal politicians is infinite, as the supervisors of Los Angeles County proved earlier this month when they approved a $550,000 pilot program to deal with the local homeless crisis.

Her mother lived to be 95 years old, passing away peacefully in her sleep in her own home and in her own bed. Ann was able to give her mother a comfortable and peaceful life in her later years because of her sacrifices.

She had the most giving and loving heart, always concerned for others over her own needs. She enjoyed coloring and drawing, and always appreciated nature, and the beauty of the world around her.

Her innocent outlook on life is an inspiration to us all!

It’s a line practically every high school coach in every sport in Georgia tells his or her team at a certain point in the season.

“Region play is the most important part of the season. Everybody is 0-0 now.”

That sentiment took on particular meaning for Hebron Christian baseball coach Ben Drust after his team entered its Region 8-A schedule just over a month ago.

After all, a particularly young Lions team needed something positive to focus on after a start to the 2018 schedule that saw it struggle through injuries and illnesses to key players and a 2-9 start against a typically MORE rugged INSIDE nonregion Complete schedule, look at the county’s state both of qualifying which baseball put it in a teams, 11A position a Hebron team was not accustomed to being in.

“When the first (Georgia High School Association) power rankings came out, we were ranked 36th (out of 40 Class A Private teams) and sitting at 2-9 overall,” Drust said. “I told the guys on the bus when we were headed to Landmark Christian (for a game March 13), ‘You know? No need to panic, but we’ve got work to do, and there are 12 teams ahead of us (for the last state playoff berth) right now.’

“Their jaws literally dropped when they heard me say (the team was) 36th. They weren’t even expecting it. To be honest with you, we were a different team after that. … A young team playing a tough schedule, you build it up for the region play.

We believe in that, and I know there are a lot of other teams that believe in that. And it paid off for us this year.”

Indeed, Hebron has been a dramatically different team since that game against Landmark Christian, and especially since its region schedule began three days later with a win over Prince Avenue Christian.

“We were really young the entire year,” Drust said.

SUWANEE — Peachtree Ridge girls soccer coach Megan Hill called for her team to start quickly during her halftime speech when the Lions led South Forsyth 1-0.

ATL UTD 2 drops first match in 3-0 loss to Battery

LAWRENCEVILLE — The average age of Atlanta United 2’s roster is 21.9 years old. The average age of the squad’s starting 11 on Tuesday night against Charleston Battery was 21.1, as the lineup featured five teenagers in a 3-0 loss to Charleston Battery.

The loss is the first for Atlanta United 2 (1-1-3) in its inaugural season. It’s also the last home match for the club until May 16 when it hosts Toronto FC II. Atlanta United 2’s lineup Tuesday night was both inexperienced in professional soccer and also regarding the amount of time they’ve played with each other, and Charleston’s ability to exploit some miscues buried the team in the second half.

“I think any time you have as much of the ball as we did and the opposition is set up to capitalize on small mistakes, things like this can happen,” head coach Scott Donnelly said. “In the two or three moments when Charleston had chances, they made us play for small mistakes.”

Although Atlanta United 2 dominated possession in the first half with 73 percent and took 10 shots to Charleston’s three, six of those three shots were off target. Atlanta United 2 finished the match with

Massaquoi thought back to when she first delved into track and field as a Berkmar freshman, when the possibility of breaking records and winning championships felt obscure. Her first long jump was slightly over 12 feet. She remembers doubting whether she was a good fit for the event, but encouragement from her coaches, Johnny Burdette and Williams, helped her persist through the first few years of competing with much older athletes.

Massaquoi started working out two to three times per day and typically waking up at 6 a.m. on Saturdays to work out with Williams. She noticed the daily grind had paid off as a junior when she set a personal-best jump over 16 feet. She followed that

Thanks to those two wins, and Johnson’s contributions on a fifth-place 400 relay, Discovery was fifth in the region meet with 52 points.

“I’m just trying to put Discovery on the map,” the junior sprinter said.

Johnson is putting forth that effort in two sports.

His longtime focus has been football, a sport he began as a 7-year-old, and he started track and field as a high school freshman.

An injury to his tailbone kept him from competing in track as a sophomore, so this season is just his second in the sport.

It already has been a record-breaking few months that included a pair of third-place finishes in

more competitive yearly since the football program began in 2015.

Jada and Jasmine Jones, two of the best hurdlers in the state, got into track and field because of a conversation their dad had with a stranger on a plane.

“Our parents knew we were pretty fast from field day in elementary school (at Greater Atlanta Christian),” Jada said with a laugh.

Jada was 10 and Jasmine was 8. They had both been dancing competitively for years, mostly ballet, when Henry came home from his trip and told them about the track club.

There was no question the sisters were fast. But learning to hurdle was painful, physically and emotionally.

“I wasn’t very good at hurdles my freshman year,” Jada said. “There were a lot of weekends spent up at this track (at GAC) and the track by our house trying to get me better at hurdles.

I feel like one day it just clicked. I feel like Jasmine never had that.”

Jasmine laughed.

“Not always.”

“You have a good hurdles story,” Jada said.

“Jada had been hurdling for about a year and it looked fun,” Jasmine said with a grin. “I had run the open 400, and that was not my favorite, so I asked to try hurdles one day.

“I went out for practice and I fell. A lot. (AlGhani) said, ‘Eh, a little too uncoordinated. Come back in a couple of years.’

So, yeah. I came back in a couple of years and then I won nationals that year.”

In the two years between that first unsuccessful attempt and winning nationals, Jasmine was absorbing all the lessons Jada was learning firsthand.

“I feel like I never had that two-year waiting period,” Jada said “I was just like ‘Go.’ “I’ve fallen a lot.”

She said hurdles is easily the most frustrating event.

“There’s so much that can go wrong,” Jada said.

“There are so many variables. Everything has to be just right.”

She turned to Jasmine.

“I feel like it’s different

for you though — because you’re pretty good,” Jada said.

Jasmine laughed but said she finds the event just as tough.

“I feel like during open sprints, you can fix yourself easily,” Jasmine said.

“But even if you want to fix yourself in hurdles, it’s kind of too late. It’s 12 seconds. Well, hopefully 11.”

“By the time you figure it out in hurdles, the race is over,” Jada said. “Adjusting yourself between hurdles, it’s literally three steps.”

Last year in the Class AAA finals, the Jones sisters went 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles.

“That was pretty amazing,” GAC head coach Brad Kinser said. “They’re each other’s biggest fans, even though they compete hard against each other.”

Jada and Jasmine were both picked for the Daily Post’s Super Six this spring. One of the questions listed for each of the six about who they think is the best athlete in Gwinnett County. Jada said Jasmine.

Jasmine said Jada. Buford’s Alexa Rossum was listed by two other Super Six picks. Rossum, who runs club with the Joneses at ATL ZooM, answered that she couldn’t decide between Jada and Jasmine.

“They’re the heart and soul of everything we do,” Kinser said. “Jada is a great leader. The girls on

North Gwinnett senior Sydnee Jackson has made a commitment to the Oglethorpe University women’s basketball program.

The 5-foot-6 guard helped the Bulldogs to the state playoffs for the first time in five years last season. She also was selected for the Gwinnett County all-star game this year.

Bears’ Phanmanee chooses Gordon baseball

Mountain View senior Andrew Phanmanee announced his commitment over the weekend to the Gordon College baseball program.

Phanmanee was a second-team allcounty selection as a junior by the Gwinnett Dugout Club. He has a .377 batting

Jada and Jasmine led the Spartans to a region title last week. They were 1-2 in the 100 hurdles. Jada won the 100. Jasmine won the 300 hurdles and the long jump. They were both on the winning 400 and 1,600 relays.

“The season has felt really short,” Jasmine said. “I can’t believe we’re already on the road to state. We’ve been pretty successful so far, both the boys and girls.

It’s exciting.

GAC has won two straight state titles and has its sights set on a third with the Joneses leading the way.

“Last year as a team we had a lot of good distance seniors, so I feel like now a lot of it is on the sprinters to really pick up the slack,” Jada said.

Henry Jones, who played in three Super Bowls with the Buffalo Bills, is the Spartans community coach for the sprints.

“They have a great relationship,” Kinser said of the Joneses. “(The girls are) so well-rounded.

They’re great dancers.

They’re tremendous students. Jada was the home-

coming queen. They’re quality people and unbelievably talented — but they’ve worked at it.”

Jada didn’t decide to pursue collegiate track until midway through high school.

“It was kind of a struggle because I love dance,” she said. “But I felt like track was a better road for me. When I figured that out, my dad sent out a couple of emails with my times.”

The coaches at Harvard and Duke responded.

“I took visits to both and I just felt like Harvard was better for me,” Jada said.

Once she’s there, Jada wants to help save the planet.

“This is so cheesy and nerdy, but every time someone asks, I say I want to save the rainforest,” Jada said. “I might go into environmental policy or environmental law. Or maybe marine bio to save the whales. I’m really big on Earth-friendly things.

Anything I can do for a greener situation, I’m probably going to go into.

But I’m kind of undecided right now.”

Jasmine, with her times and grades, will have her pick of schools. As a sophomore, she’s already put her name at the top of the county record book in 100 hurdles and long jump.

She finished third at indoor nationals in the 60 hurdles.

Harvard is on her list, along with Stanford and Southern Cal. But she hasn’t thought about it too much yet.

“My sophomore year, I had no idea what I was going to do,” Jada said.

Right now, they’re both focused on sectionals, which are Saturday, and then state where they’ll run together for the final time as high school athletes.

“It’s so weird because we started at the same time, but I feel like I’m ending before her,” Jada said. “I’m not really sad though because I feel like I’ll see her at collegiate meets.”

Perhaps even as teammates again at Harvard.

Collins Hill, Mill Creek and Peachtree Ridge racked up the individual honors on the All-Region 6-AAAAAAA Soccer Teams, released this week after voting by the league’s coaches.

Collins Hill’s Mike Burrell was voted the region’s boys coach of the year, and the Eagles’ Grant Bell was named goalkeeper of the year for the boys.

The other three boys awards went to Peachtree Ridge — defender of the year Dylan Carty, midfielder of the year Dalton Seckinger and forward of the year James Williams.

The Lions’ also earned a pair of awards on the girls side with defender of the year Joselle Morche and midfielder of the year Maddie Bondon.

Mill Creek’s Vince Hayes was the girls coach of the year. Hayes’ team featured goalkeeper of the year Leah Miller and forward of the year Ali Amrozowicz.
