A former Gwinnett County firefighter who battled ALS for 28 years died Monday. “The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services was saddened to hear about the loss of former Firefighter Craig Samples,” Firefighter Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. “He was a man of faith, integrity and values.” Samples, 58, was barely two years into his employment with the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services in the Craig Samples late 1980s when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS. A former Gwinnett County Public Schools custodian filed a federal lawsuit against the district this week, alleging she was fired because she raised objections to a work schedule change that conflicted with her Muslim prayer practices. Penny Deams had been a custodian at Ferguson Elementary School from “early 2015” until Sept. 25, 2015, according to the lawsuit.
