When the second phase of the Sugarloaf Parkway extension is finished, it will connect Ga. Highway 316 near Dacula with Interstate 85 near Buford — but drivers
will have to pay to use it. County officials confirmed that the new section of the Sugarloaf extension will be a toll road to help pay for the project. The county is seeking a variety of funding sources to pay for the extension project, including a $105 million federal
grant that Gwinnett commissioners voted Tuesday to apply for. The remaining $179.8 million of the project cost will be covered by a mixture of local, state and other federal funding and toll collections. “We believe that this is the model that allows us to fully fund
the project,” Gwinnett County Transportation Director Alan Chapman said. “We’ve got limited local resources. We have so many transportation needs countywide that we just can’t fully fund it locally.” County officials said the Sugar-

more than a decade. That streak was threatened earlier this year when rain forced the cancellation of the 2017 event just as it was beginning in May. That only made Monday night’s event, which was equal parts a makeup relay for this year and a kickoff for next year, more important for the Griffins. “We’ve been coming to Relay for Life since 2006, so we wanted to keep that tradi-
A manager in Gwinnett County’s Community Services Department was suspended without pay this week after he was accused of using a racially charged phrase to describe a black county employee during a recognition ceremony earlier this month. County spokesman Joe Sorenson said John Register was punished for referring to the longtime employee by an acronym that includes a racial slur John during the Oct. 6 ceremoRegister ny. A letter from Community Services Director Tina Fleming to Register lists him as a community services manager. “He made a statement that was inappropriate and it was overheard by other people,” Sorenson said. “It was kind of an end-of-the-year (event) recognizing employees. He was out on vacation all of last week so (Monday) was his first day back and he was suspended without pay for a week.” The suspension is the latest in a string of racially charged incidents that have happened in Gwinnett County this year. In January, county Commissioner Tommy Hunter became the center of a months-long controversy after he called U.S. Rep. John Lewis a “racist pig” and referred to Democrats as “Demonrats” and “Libtards.” Two white Gwinnett County police

Not even rain could keep Merle and Charles Griffin from continuing their streak of attending Gwinnett County Relay for Life every year — even if they had to wait nearly six months for an abbreviated event to keep that streak going. The couple — both of whom are cancer survivors — were among the hundreds of people who attended a special Relay Redo event Monday at the Infinite Energy Forum.
