‘Hail, Caesar!’ a solid effort by the Coen brothers Movie Critic

Perfectly choreographed and executed, it would turn Busby Berkeley green with envy. It is as good if not better than anything Tatum did (albeit with less clothing) in the two “Magic Mike” installments. Not given nearly enough screen time is Tilda Swinton as competing gossip columnist twin sisters who keep trying to out-scoop each other with an unconfirmed story about an embarrassing, potentially career killing event from Baird’s past. Mannix keeps both of them at arm’s

lore it would have probably been better just to have given Brolin’s character a different name. While the quality of the narrative is shaky and far below the Coens’ usually high standards, the movie is impeccably framed and overflows with eye-popping color. It also allowed many of their performers to go against type and everyone involved seems to have had a ball making it. It’s certainly not the brothers’ best effort, but it’s also far from their worst. length while promising them the moon. It is worth mentioning that every character in the story is fictional with the exception of Mannix who was played in the film “Hollywoodland” by Bob Hoskins and in two TV movies by Barney Martin. To go into details about the real events that involved Mannix would serve no purpose here as they have no bearing on this story and are far darker than what the Coens’ wanted. Given Mannix’s infamous place in industry

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Ethan and Joel Coen are the David Bowies of filmmaking. Rarely doing the same thing twice, they never stray far from their indie/art-house roots yet always seem to make their movies commercially accessible and even when they deliver something that’s not quite great, there’s always enough good stuff to warrant its existence. Bouncier than “Barton Fink” but far more restrained than “The Hudsucker Proxy,” “Hail, Caesar!” is the Coen Brothers’ third homage to Hollywood’s late Golden Age. Set in what looks to be the early ’50s, the movie is actually an anthology of genre pictures in various states of production at the fictional Capitol Studios all overseen by Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), a high-ranking executive whose principal duty is to keep the studio’s image untarnished. Following him over the course of a single day, the Coens show Mannix in perpetual crisis management mode; putting out one fire after another while never losing his cool and wondering if this is really what he wants to do for the rest of his life. A devout Catholic who goes to confession at least once a day, Mannix is also unapologetic if, while carrying out his work chores, he needs to slap people around in order to get their

doesn’t work and causes the fey and flamboyant director Laurence Laurentz (Ralph Fiennes) to bust a gasket or two. Stealing the show is Channing Tatum as Burt Gurney, a song-and-dance sensation who is equal parts Gene Kelly and Francis X. Bushman. Clearly inspired by the Kelly/ Frank Sinatra musical “On the Town,” Gurney and a dozen other sailor-clad dancers turn in an extended but not overlong number that is drenched in sexual innuendo.

attention. Whether you agree with his methods or not, it’s hard to argue with his results. Whether it be an ingénue posing for questionable photos, a pregnant and unwed starlet needing a quickie wedding, meeting with clerics of different churches to get their blessings — and promises of no future boycotts — Mannix gets things done with as little fuss as possible. On this he gets thrown a big curve when Baird Whitlock (a suitably hammy George Clooney), the studio’s highest-profile A-lister is kidnapped from the set of a sword and sandal epic that recalls “”BenHur” and “Spartacus.” A loose cannon known to drink and womanize too much, Whitlock is being held for a $100,000 ransom which eventually pans out to be the weakest link in the sub-plot chain while also bearing a strong resemblance to the recent “Trumbo.” Showing up as a gumpopping, attitude-having, free spirit-type is Scarlett Johansson as DeeAnna, the industry’s water-ballet queen clearly modeled after Esther Williams. Twice divorced and not looking for a third go-round, DeeAnna proves to be Mannix’s biggest challenge of the day. Providing one of the arguable highlights is Alden Ehrenreich (“Blue Jasmine,” “Stoker”) as Hobie Doyle, a hayseed cowboy up-and-comer fashioned after Roy Rogers and Gene Autry but easier on the eyes. Great at action and signing, Hobie is force-fit into an overstylized production that
