LEILI MURDER TRIAL

LAWRENCEVILLE — Matthew Leili likes to talk. This is well known. His attorney has called him boisterous and opinionated. In tape after tape Leili made of arguments with his wife, he can be heard pressuring Nique to speak
to him. Around the Gwinnett County courthouse this week, many speculated that the man would take the stand and defend himself against murder charges. On Thursday, he declined. “I don’t think I can do it. I’m too emotional,” Leili told Judge Randy Rich.
The defense then rested its case in the trial, which has labored on since last Wednesday and is expected to enter the closing arguments phase this morning. Thursday’s proceedings featured the first testimony from supporters of the defendant: his father and the two daughters he had with
the victim, now 17 and 14. The girls each told a story about one day in late June 2011, less than two weeks before their mother disappeared. They said she was hearing voices. “She was just saying she knows what we’re saying about her and what the voices tell her,” 14-year-old

Buford hotel manager gets ‘dream’ trip Company contest yields Super Bowl 50 tickets By Keith Farner keith.farner@gwinnettdailypost.com
The shock still hasn’t subsided. Even after two weeks. A loyal Atlanta Falcons fan who went to the University of Tennessee, Alexis Jochim has a clear rooting interest in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday. Jochim, operations manager at the Courtyard Mall of Georgia hotel in Buford, is about to live a lifelong dream when she boards a flight on Friday morning to San Francisco. “Actually it’s been my No. 1 dream, I’m still in shock,” she said. “I still don’t believe I’m going to the Super Bowl. … That’s a dream in itself, to see Peyton Manning in a Super Bowl.” Jochim, a Suwanee resident, and her boyfriend, Tyler Stevens, will take part in an all-expenses-paid trip after Jochim and her colleagues at the Courtyard Mall of Georgia earned the highest number of points in a guest satisfaction survey competition. “His first reaction when I told him, he was quiet about it, he didn’t believe me,” Jochim said. “I had proof to show him.” See SUPER BOWL, Page 7A
Tom Rice says he will not run for re-election By Curt Yeomans curt.yeomans@gwinnettdailypost.com
State Rep. Tom Rice threw open the race for his seat in the Legislature on Thursday when he announced he would not seek re-election after spending two decades in the Georgia General Assembly. The Republican, who represents parts of Norcross, Peachtree Corners, Berkeley Lake Tom Rice and Johns Creek in the state House of Representatives, plans to retire so he can focus more of his time on ministry work at his church, Peachtree Corners Baptist Church, according to a House spokeswoman. “I have been privileged to serve the legislative needs of the citizens of Peachtree Corners, Berkeley Lake, Norcross and parts of Johns Creek since 1997,” Rice said in a statement. “During my time in the Georgia House, I am glad to have been a part of the historic change in leadership that has allowed us to maximize the chance to improve the quality of life for our citizens. “My retirement will provide opportunity for a new generation of leaders to bring their ideas for an improved state government to prominence.” Rice’s decision to retire means the See RICE, Page 7A

‘Back on their feet’ SaltLight extends hours to open access to extra resources By Curt Yeomans

Officials at the SaltLight Center in Lawrenceville have acted as a beacon in the night, offering assistance to single women and women with children who have nowhere else to turn for years. Now they are extending that beacon into the daylight hours as well. Family Promise of Gwinnett County, which oversees the center, helped it launch new daytime hours and a resource area this week that extend the shelter’s operations for another eight hours each day. The resource area, which includes three computer stations, gives women who come to the shelter a place to search for additional help. “So far we’ve had somebody staying everyday to search for resources,” SaltLight Director Jeanette Bowden said. “They’ve been looking for all kinds of resources. We’ve helped them look for staffing agencies so they could gain some income, and some of them have been looking for Section Eight housing so they can move on and have a place to live.” The new daytime hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. When combined with the existing

6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. hours that the shelter was already operating under, it puts SaltLight close to its goal of being a 24-hour place where women who have no place to live can come for assistance. Family Promise Executive Director Chuck Ferraro said the group wanted to expand SaltLight’s offerings so that residents who need
assistance would not have to go to multiple places to get assistance or information about community resources. “We decided to open a resource center with a computer lab so that, instead of just hanging out here, they could help themselves get back on their feet,” he said. See SALTLIGHT, Page 7A
