Gwinnett braces for possible winter weather FROM STAFF REPORTS It looks like Gwinnett County may get snow — or at least some form of winter weather — this weekend, whether residents want it or not. At least that was the news coming out of the National Weather Service on Thursday. The federal agency

issued a 26-hour winter weather advisory for parts of North Georgia that went into effect at 5 a.m. today. That news came after the weather service’s Peachtree City office issued a warning that said the Interstate 85 corridor could see between half an inch and one inch of snow accumulate today.

Doug Chatham and his family spent several days, along with Gwinnett County police, checking hospitals for his daughter, Nique Leili, in July 2011 before her murdered body was found. Shameka Render prayed to God that her 15-year-old son, Nicolas Jackson II, would survive after robbers shot him during a home invasion in February 2012, only to have her faith tested when the teen died from his wounds.

Jenene Craig had to tell her three children that their father, Keith Woods, had been killed in a car crash one morning in 2001. “We’re all members of a club that we did not chose to join,” Chatham said. “No one wants to join, but the membership continues to grow.” Chatham, Render and Craig spoke at the annual Victims of See VIGIL, Page 9A

Cops: Dacula man dies after Conyers man slaps him BY CURT YEOMANS curt.yeomans@gwinnettdailypost.com

A Dacula man died last weekend after he was slapped by a Conyers man whose masculinity he had challenged, police said. Adrian Herrera was charged with voluntary manslaughter in the death of Tomas Rodriguez during a party at a home located at 153 Pipeline Road in Dacula. The pair had been continuously having run-ins throughout Saturday leading up to Rodriguez’s death early Sunday, according to a Gwinnett County police report. Herrera told officers that Rodriguez allegedly called him a Adrian Herrera slang term for a female body part several times and told him he “was not (expletive).” “(Herrera) stated he became irritated due to (his) son being present,” police wrote in the report. “The suspect stated he warned the victim to ‘knock it off.’” At some point, Herrera went horseback riding during a party that night and returned at 3 a.m. Sunday. As he got off the horse, he and Rodriguez got into another altercation that allegedly led to the latter man’s death. “When (Herrera) dismounted the horse (Rodriguez) came from behind (Herrera) and grabbed (his) right shoulder, and stated “You’re not going home yet, are you (expletive)?” officers said in their report. “(Herrera) stated he then open-hand slapped (Rodriguez) with his right hand in the face. (Rodriguez) then collapsed and stopped breathing after being struck.” Herrera told police he tried to perform CPR on Rodriguez, but other people at the party allegedly stopped him. No one else allegedly tried to perform CPR on Rodriguez until police arrived, Herrera told officers. One of the officers began performing CPR on the victim when they arrived. Rodriguez was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center by Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services officials.
