the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center. The Sunday voting proposal attracted the most attention from speakers such as Donna McLeod, who said the additional day would benefit voters who cannot get to the polls on weekdays or on the two Saturday voting days. “It is important, if you really, truly believe in
representative democracy … that you understand the importance of making sure voting and voter access is a priority for you,” McLeod said. “It shouldn’t have to be where we have to come here and ask you for that. That should be automatically done.” The county made headlines before the 2016 general election when vot-
ers stood in lines for hours to cast ballots early for the hotly contested presidential election. The schedule for the 2018 general election — in which an open governor’s seat will be contested — includes one week of voting from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the county’s elections office in Lawrenceville, followed by Saturday vot-
ing. Advance voting would then open again on the following Monday at satellite sites and last for 11 1/2 days, including the halfday of Sunday voting. Per state law, early voting would end the Friday before Election Day. “(Sunday voting) was the most requested action

Melanie Conner walked into Rainbow Village and her new job as chief executive officer with a sense of excitement for the future of the 26-year-old Duluth nonprofit. On Monday, Conner began the transition period working with retiring CEO Nancy Yancey and the staff to ensure Rainbow Village continues to operate smoothly. Yancey is retiring at the end of the year. During the transition period, Conner will also be relocating to Gwinnett from Columbus. “I’m very excited of what’s to come,” Conner said of the nonprofit whose purpose is to house homeless families and get them back on their feet. “I’m expecting some amazing things to happen during the time that I am here.” Conner is an Atlanta native, born at Grady Hospital and raised in southwest Atlanta. She graduated from the now defunct Southwest High School before getting a degree from Georgia State University. She has two master’s degrees, one from Interdenominational Theological Center in divinity and Christian education and the other from Capella University in nonprofit management. Part of her excitement is for the new challenges the job brings. Conner has a diverse work background, having worked for Coca-Cola, at a nonprofit as the

Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash had a bit of deja vu when she showed up at the county’s Lilburn Activity Building on Tuesday for a ribbon-cutting to ceremonially open the facility. That’s because she’d participated in a ribbon-cutting before at that facility — about three decades ago. Nash recalled how the building, which was originally the Lilburn library branch, was approved as part of a bond referendum in the 1980s. The library was one of the first libraries
built out of that referendum which Nash, as a member of the county administration at the time, worked on.
“As I was thinking about this, you know you’ve been around — maybe some people would say too long — when you were
