A Gwinnett County police officer once hailed for his “valor” has resigned from the department, claiming safety issues and misuse of the force’s helicopters. Phillip McMillan, who officially left the department Friday, had mostly recently

served as a mechanic in the police department’s aviation unit but was in the Phillip McMillan process of being transferred back to a regular precinct when he elected to quit. An investigation is

underway based on McMillan’s performance and allegations he made against the head of the aviation unit, police confirmed. “I was unjustly kicked out of the aviation unit for sticking up for safety,” the officer wrote in his resignation letter, not naming the particular alleged safety

BUFORD — Former Gwinnett County commission Chairman Wayne Hill called Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center executive director Steve Cannon a liar Monday morning. He meant it in the nicest way possible though. The center’s staff got Carolyn Hill to bring her husband to the center under the false pretense that he was just there to visit the facility and grounds. As he walked through the front door though, he found himself face-to-face with the center’s staff and its foundation board gathered around a podium. A black drape covered a large object next to the podium. Cannon walked up to greet him. Hill just began to laugh as he realized what was going on. “You know something, you’re a liar,” Hill joked as he greeted Cannon. The reason for the secrecy was simple. The staff and board members wanted to surprise Hill with the designs for a fivepiece sculpture of Hill and his grandchildren that will soon be installed at the center. Speeches from Cannon and board member Marsha Anderson Bomar, who is heading the sculpture committee, followed. Vic McCallum, the artist who will make the molds for the

Cooper O’Brien’s memory will be honored this year at the Greater Gwinnett Championship. A charity event called the “Cooper Cup” will be played during the regular round of the Champions Tour event at TPC Sugarloaf on April 18 as former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Steve Bartkowski, Cooper former Atlanta Braves O’Brien pitcher John Smoltz and former University of Georgia kicker Kevin Butler play a competitive round within the tournament. O’Brien, an eighth-grader at the time, passed away in July following a battle with clear cell sarcoma, a rare cancer. His fight

and a smaller statue of the center’s unofficial mascot, Bubba the Turtle. “All of them interact and become one piece of sculpture,” McCallum said. “They play off each other for that composition.” They will collectively form the basis for a sculpture garden outside the center’s front door.

With support from the majority of the city council, Snellville Mayor Pro Tem Tom Witts announced his intent Monday to go after the mayor’s seat in the November election. “I am running because I believe in Snellville — all that we are and all that we can be,” Witts said in the announcement. “When I first ran for office in 2009, I said I was committed to making sure Snellville is a place where Tom Witts everybody is proud to be somebody.
