Celebrating survival

LAWRENCEVILLE — “Tye Toss” was exactly what it sounds like. Steven Singleton, a former Buford High and Southeastern Conference football player, would pick up his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son Tye Hardin and toss him, aiming for a soft spot for him to land, sometimes the couch. Then the boy would get up and go back for more from the 6-foot-2, 300-pounder. This friendly game, according to testimony given in court Friday, was Singleton’s most recent explanation for what caused the child’s fatal injuries in late April. Now charged with murder, Singleton reportedly claimed he missed the couch and Tye hit the floor.

Relay brings awareness with carnival-like atmosphere By Curt Yeomans

LAWRENCEVILLE — Conventional wisdom says lightning does not strike in the same place twice. Scott Schoenthal says it does, at least in a figurative sense. Schoenthal, 34, was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1998. He was treated for it and thought the worst was behind him. He was then diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2004. That news stunned both the Lawrenceville resident and his doctor. “Honestly, my doctor looked at me and said, ‘Lightning struck twice,’” said Schoenthal, who has battled recurring metastatic germ cell tumors since 2013. Several cancer survivors and fighters, like Schoenthal, said the day they received their diagnosis was the worst day of their lives. That sadness was a distant memory on Friday, however, when they attended the Gwinnett County Relay for Life at the county fairgrounds in Lawrenceville. Fun was the name of the game at the relay. Although cancer is a solemn topic, the fairground was alive with the kind of sounds that are usually only heard at a fair. Motorcycle police and a high school drum line led the Survivor Lap around the fairground’s track while supporters cheered them on from the sidelines. Attendees laughed and cheered together as they did the Purple

Gov. Nathan Deal has held signing ceremonies across the state in recent days for a variety of bills passed by the General Assembly. But one bill that passed overwhelmingly in the Legislature may not get a ceremony — or a signature. In fact, it’s expected to get a veto. House Bill 86 would Nathan Deal move the current Division of Aging Services out of the Department of Human Services and create a new state agency. The proposed Adult and Aging Services Agency would be attached to the Department
