New name, mission for hospice in Duluth area BY CURT YEOMANS curt.yeomans@gwinnettdailypost.com

The Duluth-based hospice that gained worldwide attention two years ago when the daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown became a patient is winding down inpatient hospice services and preparing to move in a new direction, officials announced this past week. Peachtree Christian Hospice and its operator, PruittHealth, announced the facility will become Peachtree Christian Health in 2018. Under this new name, it will operate as a life enrichment center that offers various types of therapy, support programs, clinical and personal care, educational programs and programs for veterans and lowincome families. The decision to end hospice care was based on shifts in the model for end of life care, PruittHealth Chairman and CEO Neil Pruitt said in a statement. “Today, more and more patients and doctors are choosing home hospice care, and as such, the demand for inpatient hospice care has significantly declined,” he said. “Therefore, it is no longer a viable business model for PruittHealth to operate a full-time, dedicated inpatient hospice facility, like Peachtree Christian Hospice, moving forward. “This decision was a difficult one, as Peachtree Christian Hospice has been a wonderful partner to our organization and the local community since opening in 2000.” The hospice took in its last patients Wednesday and has pledged to provide its traditional level of service and care to them. Peachtree Christian Hospice and PruittHealth have provided inpatient hospice care to more than 10,000 patients over the last 17 years. Among its patients was Bobbi Kristina Brown, who was brought there in her final days in 2015. The hospice will host two “Coffee and Conversation” sessions to discuss the planned changes with the public this month. The first will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, and the second will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Dec. 12. Both sessions will be held at the hospice, which is located at 3430 Duluth See HOSPICE, Page 6A
