What began as a childhood passion for Tammie Hernandez to hang Christmas decorations has evolved into a spectacle for Gwinnett County residents. Hernandez, a Duluth resident, enjoyed holidays as a time to spend with family, however, Christmas was her favorite. “My birthday is on Christmas Eve, and my family would get together every year,” Hernandez said. “I get the decorating gene from my grandmother.

She would go to the extreme with lights.” Decorating the house began as a way to cope with her grandmother’s death in 2015. She began to collect holiday items in summer 2016 in preparation for a big display. She said most of the shopping she did came from thrift stores, garage sales and estate sales.

Gwinnett County shoppers flocked to retail outlets this weekend for a chance to pick up last minute gifts for Christmas. While many people have already taken advantage of shopping deals and holidays like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday, others opted to take their chances and deal with the crowds. At Sugarloaf Mills Mall in Lawrenceville, Christmas music played throughout the building to complement the murmur of guests. Each visitor had a unique reason to be there, whether it be frantic shopping or just enjoying the holiday activities and spending time out of the house.
