MARTA vote could provide economic boost BY CURT YEOMANS

Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash will not outwardly say the county’s upcoming referendum on joining MARTA has resulted in businesses reaching out about bringing their companies to the county. But she’s not denying that news of the upcoming vote

could potentially be a plus when trying to land a big company, either. As Nash joined Gov. Nathan Deal and Hapag-Lloyd North American President Uffe Ostergaard earlier this week to announce the company’s expansion of operations in Peachtree Corners, the topic of Gwinnett’s impending MARTA vote did come up. Afterward, Nash said that

just the county commission’s decision in August to call a referendum on MARTA alone may have economic development benefits for Gwinnett. “It certainly checks another box on the location surveys that are part of the process in the economic development world,” Nash said. “It is an indication that we are looking

Incoming Gwinnett County Commissioner Marlene Fosque proclaimed change had arrived in Gwinnett as she and fellow commission newcomer Ben Ku took their oaths of office Friday at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center. Fosque and Ku were sworn in by Gwinnett County Probate Judge Christopher Ballar in separate, back-to-back ceremonies. Fosque represents District 4, while Ku represents District 2. The new commissioners are the first Democrats in decades to serve on the county commission, but their swearingin ceremonies had deeper meanings. Fosque is the county’s first black commissioner, while Ku is both the first Asian-American and the first openly gay person to serve on the governing body. “It’s a brand new day; change is here,”

“You have three minutes to decorate your tree with everything that’s in the bag,” PAX — Program of Academic Exchange Regional Manager Roxanne Lau shouted to the several dozen students crowded around tables in Lilburn’s Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall. As Lau yelled “start,” the teens dumped out their bags and frantically began beautifying their tabletop trees, some decorating with tinsel while others hung ornaments from branches.
