About six years ago, America watched chef Jason Ellis finish among the final five competitors on season seven of Fox’s foodbased reality show “Hell’s Kitchen.” “If you finish in the top five, you’re pretty much set,” Ellis said. A year or so later, rapper Yung Joc and a handful of media types stood in the kitchen of one of Tyler Perry’s homes and watched as Ellis cooked dinner for a well-known publicist’s birthday. He’s served food for Lil Wayne, Taylor Swift and former Atlanta Falcons player Jonathan Babineaux. But today, Ellis serves food to Gwinnett residents out of a tiny barbecue joint connected to an Ace Hardware store off Buford Drive in Lawrenceville. It’s called Smoke 631 BBQ, and Ellis owns it. “I love barbecue. I love it,” he said. “So besides all the fancy things I’ve done — all the entertainers I’ve cooked for — I just love barbecue. A Lawrenceville man who Gwinnett police say recently assaulted and robbed at least six women outside their residences after allegedly following them home from the grocery store or other errands is behind bars. Shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday, Gwinnett Police Department officers arrested 33-year-old Boris Demarcus Bell after issuing an alert for Bell’s green Buick LeSabre. Detectives identified the car after Bell allegedly used a victim’s credit card at the Kroger at 950 Herrington Road in unincorporated Lawrenceville, according to Cpl. Michele Pihera, spokeswoman for the department. “In the (second) Dec. 4 robbery, the suspect is seen attempting to use the victim’s financial transaction card; that’s how we were able to get surveillance images,” Pihera said. “Using those surveillance images, we were able to determine the kind of car he was driving. Our officers assigned

I wanted to come in and make good food and make that talk first. Not come in and have people say, ‘Oh this guy, he’s been on TV. He’s cooked for Lil Wayne. He’s cooked for this person and that person. This better be good.’” — Jason Ellis, owner of Smoke 631 BBQ
would be cool, which it has been.” The celebrity chef would know “cool” — he’s been embedded in some of the
coolest scenes almost since he began his cooking career. Ellis attended culinary school through the U.S.
Army in Berlin during the 1990s. He returned to his home in Greenville, S.C., and worked his way up as a chef at local hotel chains. Eventually, he moved to Atlanta to work at a new Hilton Garden Inn being constructed near HartfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport. He worked there for a See BARBECUE, Page 10A
A Lawrenceville woman who recently confessed to throwing a Molotov cocktail through the window of a local business was arrested and charged with two felonies and one misdemeanor in connection with the incident, which occurred in midNovember. Nkenge McDowell, 45, turned herself in to authorities on Dec. 8 after Nkenge confessing to the crime the McDowell previous day. That’s when she was brought in for questioning regarding a residential fire at a property managed by Waypoint Homes, the company whose office she allegedly allegedly threw the Molotov cocktail into, according to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Tommy Rutledge. “We credit the arrest to an alert fire investigator who was on scene at the residential fire, (which occurred) about three weeks after the (Nov. 13) office fire,” Rutledge said. “The investigator noticed the fact that (McDowell’s) physical description as well See FIRE, Page 7A
