Lora Thigpen came to a meeting about Ga. Highway 316 transportation projects in the Dacula area on Monday night to find out if she was going to lose her home.

Thigpen lives about five houses away from the highway on Harbins Road. The county plans to convert Highway 316’s intersection with Harbins Road into a limited access interchange with exit and entrance ramps.

That had Thigpen worried her home might be targeted for demolition.

During the meeting at the Dacula Park Activity Building, she talked at length with a Georgia Department of Transportation engineer about where her home was in relation to where the highway is and where the planned interchange will be.

In the end, Thigpen said she got a glimmer of hope.

“It’s going to affect people we know who live closer to 316, our neighbors … but it might just miss us,” she said.

Monday night’s meeting was hosted by state Sen. P.K. Martin and the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation to give residents an update on various transportation projects taking place along Ga. 316. The highway has gradually been converted to a limited access

Gwinnett County elections officials are asking for funding to make some big changes to handle voter access needs, some of which they are now required by the federal government to provide.

The elections office had two issues to address in their 2018 budget requests. One was compliance with a new federal mandate to provide assistance to non-English speaking voters.

The Georgia Association of College Republicans announced that state Senate President Pro Tempore David Shafer and state Rep. Buzz Brockway won the straw polls for the lieutenant governor and secretary of state races, respectively, at the association’s Fall Leadership Retreat.

Gov. Nathan Deal, his wife, Sandra, state legislators, artist Martin Dawe and members of the King family gathered at the State Capitol to unveil a statue of the Civil Rights icon on the 54th anniversary of his “I have a dream” speech.

The statue was approved by the General Assembly in 2014, and Deal put together

a committee tasked with working with the King family to pick an artist to design and create the statue.

Deal said the statue stood as a tribute to the Civil Rights leader’s life and work.

“Dr. King’s legacy is one of hope,” Deal said. “He gave, and continues to give, men and women a reason to believe and to dream. He expanded the aspirations of future generations. The America we know is a better place because one man followed his conscience. Erecting a monument in his memory, both facing Liberty Plaza and on the grounds of the Capitol of his home state, is a fitting and long overdue honor.”

The 8-foot-tall statue shows King in mid-stride, carrying books and a coat. It stands atop a 36-inch pedestal that was made from Georgia granite and has “MLK” engraved on it.

The statue was made by Dawe, whose work might be familiar to Gwinnett County residents. He also made the children statues that were unveiling earlier this year as part of Duluth’s 9/11-themed “Dream Keepers” sculpture.

State Rep. Calvin Smyre, D-Columbus, who was picked by Deal to serve as a liaison between the state and the King family on the statue project, said the unveiling marked a “great day in the history of our state and nation” as he recognized state officials, the King family and Dawe.

“As a Georgian and native son, Dr. King inspired our nation and the world with his message and vision,” Smyre said. “The King statue will inspire and give hope to generations to come.”

Gwinnett police are looking for two men they believe shot another man in the neck during a fight outside a restaurant in Duluth on Sunday night.

The victim is expected to survive.

The fight began at about 10:43 p.m. outside Las Costas Nayaritas on 1555 Pleasant Hill Road. Two men reportedly approached the victim and a fight began.

“One of the suspects armed themselves with a gun and shot the victim as he ran towards Pleasant Hill Road,” said Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Matthew Williamson. “Both suspects fled from the scene on foot after the

shooting.”

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. Responding officers rendered medical aid, and the man was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center.

Investigators searched the area but did not find the suspects.

“Providing the documents needed to comply with the Voting Rights Act is not a one-time task. Between the need of maintaining registration materials county-wide, and election materials depending on the type of electoral year makes this decision package a critical need to overall staffing of the Voter Registration and Elections Office.”

Day said the goal is to make the voting process seem less intimidating for people from other countries who have become U.S. citizens but haven’t experienced the American voting process before.

“A lot of data shows the first time voting experience for people is crucial,” Day said. “So a lot of these folks in our second language community, just as first-time voters from anywhere, need to have a positive voting experience. Having more

staff helps educate those communities about what to expect and take away the fear factor.”

Meanwhile, the proposed addition of Sunday voting is another eye-catching request from elections officials. It would only be offered for six hours at the main elections office on the Sunday before the final week of early voting for the November 2018 general election.

It would cost the county $13,252 to do it and make it one of the rare counties that offers voting on Sundays. “(It would available) for those who might not be able to attend other days,” Fleming said.

The request for a half-day of Sunday voting coincides with the request for additional days of early voting at satellite polling locations.

Elections officials made a similar request in its 2016 budget request, but funding was only provided for one week of early voting at satel-

lite locations for that election year.

Two early voting locations ultimately had to opened earlier than planned, however, when the turnout at the main elections office proved to higher than expected and the county made headline for its hours-long wait times.

The main elections office would continue to have three weeks of early voting under the budget request. Adding an extra week of early voting at the satellite locations, however, would cost the county $377,940.

“Their hope is to reduce wait times, increase participation and improve the overall experience of all voters,” Fleming said.

If both requests are approved, there would be 17 and a half days of early voting at the main elections office and 12 days of early voting at the satellite office.

Both the main office and the satellite locations would offer two Saturday voting

dates.

They also want to operate early voting locations on a 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. schedule, except the one Sunday voting date, which would have a noon to 6 p.m. schedule.

County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash had some concerns about the elections office’s ability to meet the demands of additional early voting days though. In addition to simply needing staff to work the polls, elections officials said each polling location will need a bilingual poll worker to help Spanish-speaking voters.

Nash said she wanted to see elections officials provide a plan for ensuring the staffing would be in place for the additional days of early voting. She raised concerns that the county would announce that it would be expand early voting opportunities and then not have enough staff to provide that service.

Diana, still our goddess of beauty What is it about the month of August that finds so many celebrities dying?

Just this month we’ve seen the passing of Glen Campbell, Barbara Cook, Dick Gregory and Jerry Lewis. Thomas Meehan, who wrote the book for the musical “Annie,” died last week.

Marilyn Monroe died in August 1962 (though she “lives” on in so many ways).

Elvis Presley died in August 1977. He too lives on, though it now costs $28.75 just to walk by his burial plot at Graceland.

August is also awash in images and remembrances of Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash in Paris 20 years ago. Channel 4 in Britain recently aired videotape of Diana, taken during sessions with her voice coach, Peter Settelen, in which Cal she discussed Thomas her failing marriage and her affair with former Army Captain John Hewitt.

On the 10th anniversary of her death, I wrote a column about Diana and the cult of beauty. Those who worship her image still remind me of those who once worshipped false goddesses. Very little has changed.

“Diana is our goddess of beauty. Her image on the cover of People magazine guaranteed robust sales. We can’t get enough of that face, the clothes or the fairy tale story with an unhappy ending.

Maybe if we keep reliving the story, the ending will be different, but it never is because worship based on externals is always bound to disappoint.

“Beauty covers a multitude of sins, and Diana, like all of us, had plenty of them.

We forgive her multiple affairs and her manipulative tactics because we love her looks. She makes us feel good still. We desire her even in death.

“A decade ago, the feminist writer Germaine Greer penned a devastatingly honest essay for The Sunday Times that penetrated the makeup, the clothes, the jewels and the image: ‘When Diana presented herself to her adoring public as a guileless girl who fell in love with a chap who just happened to be heir to the English throne, only to have her innocent young love spurned, she was acting a lie.’

“Greer says that in adulthood Diana became ‘more, rather than less, devious.’

It is a character assessment her adoring disciples are prepared to overlook. And then Greer writes this explosive line: ‘The story of how she emerged from her dowdy chrysalis to become the people’s princess is often told, but what is seldom assessed is just how much of a performance this was.’

“We are prepared to believe lies if they affirm our deepest desire to feel good, if not about ourselves, then about a goddess statue that can be as devoid of spiritual power as the false gods created by pagan peoples.

“Suppose Diana had been the mistress of Prince Charles and Camilla were his first wife. If Camilla and not Diana had been killed in that Paris tunnel, would the outpouring of grief from people who never met her have been as great? Surely not.

“No one celebrates or elevates plainness; less so, goodness. Consider the power of the beauty cult. … Cable networks employ Barbie-doll wannabes who are blondes with short skirts and apparently little self-respect. They are all interchangeable parts, virtually indistinguishable from one another. Most speak in cliches and have trouble ad-libbing anything that isn’t written for them in the teleprompter, but the lip gloss and hair look great. They are the fantasies of aging male management and middle-school boys or am I being redundant?

“The Diana cult will continue until someone younger with a better story replaces her. The public always wants a better and younger story. Consider the musical “Chicago,” when public attention and favor quickly pass from Velma Kelly to Roxie Hart and then to yet another woman with a more exciting narrative.

“Germaine Greer concludes by writing that Diana was a ‘desperate woman seeking applause.’ No wonder so many still love her because they are seeking the same thing.”

We also respect history, but we move on. The monuments in question may remind us of who and what came before, but they also reflect a half-truth. Perhaps the better solution is to build more memorials, as the city of Richmond has done, to honor the heroic slaves, their forebears and descendants, whose skills, knowledge and labor made both the Old South and modern America possible.

In the meantime, ESPN ought to give Robert Lee a raise.

Free speech in all its peaceable glory It was a fine day for protesting at Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., where folks were enjoying their right to free speech in a productive and peaceable manner.

Lafayette Square sits directly across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House. The park was packed with a variety of people the Saturday morning I visited nearly a decade ago.

A large group of Hispanic protesters was demanding “living wages,” acceptance of bilingual education and amnesty for illegal immigrants.

A dozen other protesters stood on the other side of Pennsylvania Avenue. They called themselves “Freepers,” for “freedom protesters.” Each became a Freeper through freerepublic.com, an online forum for independent grassroots conservatives working to roll back decades of government overreach and to root out fraud and corruption.

“It’s not like we don’t have other things to do with our time,” said one woman, who told me she drove three hours every Saturday to voice her beliefs. “But someone has to speak up to defend our Constitution.”

Two games were going on amid tourists and protesters, but the Park Police didn’t care; hockey players have as much right to the park area as any other American citizens do.

Between two anti-nuclearbomb signs sat an elderly woman with a sunburned face. According to her handout, she came from Spain in the late 1960s, married, had a daughter, got divorced and lost custody of her daughter.

She essentially lived across from the White House, protesting nuclear bombs 24 hours a day.

As I chatted with her, two women dressed as ninja warriors approached. They carried a white sheet with a message written in Spanish.

“What does that say?” I asked one of the ninja warriors.

“No hablo Ingles,” she said to me.

The Spanish anti-nuclearbomb woman read the ninjas’ sign. She told me they were protesting the evils of capitalism.

Suddenly, the protesters who had been demanding amnesty, living wages and bilingual education began marching toward me on their way to the White House.

They were blowing whistles and cheering while reiterating their demands through a megaphone.

Suddenly, Pennsylvania Avenue was a sea of tourists, protesters of every stripe and hockey players in the heat of competition. The energy, noise and enthusiasm were astounding.

Nobody brought clubs.

Nobody fought. Nobody tried to silence anyone else on that Saturday morning. Everyone freely exercised his or her right to speak freely.

One of my history professors at Penn State marveled over the magnificence of our political system.

America, at its best, is organized chaos — in which

different opinions continually collide and work themselves out in a peaceful and constructive manner.

Every citizen has the right to peaceably assemble and protest. We can criticize our political leaders with megaphones or in print or on YouTube.

We have the right to stage revolutions. All we have to do is vote.

Every citizen has the right to speak freely — even the right to say things that, to the majority of us, are hateful and ill-informed.

Of course, that is the challenge with freedom.

It opens the floodgates to everything that is good in the human heart — justice and integrity and generosity — but it also opens the floodgates to everything that is bad in the human heart.

In any event, the First Amendment, when properly respected and practiced, is a wonderful thing.

I witnessed it in all its glory in Lafayette Square one sunny Saturday morning not so long ago.

Exhausted and drenched in filthy floodwater, a sea of volunteers and rescue workers are scrambling to save the latest wave of Harvey’s victims.

Some used fishing boats.

Others used big SUVs. One volunteer even used a dump truck to save anyone he could.

Three days after Hurricane Harvey slammed into Texas, the stubborn, slowmoving storm wreaked more havoc Tuesday when it caused Houston’s Addicks Reservoir to overflow and breached a levee in nearby Brazoria County.

“It was scary — the water was up to here,” Houston resident Yee Seng said, gesturing to the middle of her chest.

The floodwater that topped Addicks Reservoir deluged her street and turned it into a river. Seng’s boyfriend, Steve Konemany, tried to salvage some of her belongings by floating them on an air mattress.

“We just didn’t want to stick around to see what was going to happen,” Seng said.

Catastrophic flooding from Harvey has already swallowed thousands of homes in the Houston area where officers have rescued more than 3,500 people from the floodwaters, Police Chief Art Acevedo said.

That number is almost certain to keep rising, as countless residents remain trapped in their deluged homes three days after Hurricane Harvey struck.

“Every passing hour, more boats are getting into the water,” Acevedo said Tuesday. “This is a catastrophic event.”

Five people have died from the calamitous storm, and with another landfall expected, the devastation could intensify.

Several rain gauges southeast of downtown Houston report more than 48 inches of rain from the storm known as Harvey.

That marks the most rain ever recorded in the contiguous United States from a tropical storm that made landfall. The previous record was held by Tropical Storm Amelia, which hit Texas in 1978.

service and in other ways, but those haven’t been fully discussed given the sudden news of his death. An informal gathering of Blakely’s friends and colleagues was held at Stetson’s Allen Hall on Tuesday afternoon. A large crowd turned out for that event to honor a fallen classmate and teammate.

Georgia defense faces challenge in veteran Appalachian State QB Lamb

ATHENS — Appalachian State will hold its homecoming game Oct. 7 against New Mexico State in front of thousands of fans who will sit amongst the mountainous backdrop of Boone, N.C. But for senior quarterback Taylor Lamb and his Georgia lineage, the true homecoming comes Saturday when the Mountaineers make the 232-mile trip to Athens to play the Bulldogs.

The four-year starter behind center is a native of Calhoun — playing a key role in beating Buford 2724 in the 2011 GHSA AA state championship — and the son of Bobby Lamb, who is the head coach at Mercer.

“It’s a great family, great people and I am betting that Taylor is going to go into some kind of coaching himself,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said. “I know he will be a really successful one, so I know they are excited about this opportunity for him to come back to his home state and play at Georgia.”

Lamb also has a direct tie to the program as he grew up a fan and had access to the facilities. His grandfather, Ray Lamb, was a member of Georgia’s support staff while Taylor was growing up.

The Bulldogs are well aware of his past ties to the state, and knows the Mountaineers’ signal caller will use it to amplify his performance.

chip on his shoulder and showed he could’ve played here,” Georgia senior defensive back Aaron Davis said. “I expect him to go out and try to have the best game of his career.”

Georgia players unanimously agreed that Appalachian State put itself on the map when it upset Michigan as an FCS program in 2007. A few players don’t have concrete memories of that moment, but it is a near victory over the Bulldogs’ rival that is fresh in players’ minds.

Tennessee, a team laden with expectations, hosted the Mountaineers to open its 2016 season. The Volunteers’ hopes were that it would be a nice opportunity to kick off the campaign and showcase the team’s talent, but that nearly didn’t go as planned.

Appalachian State looked like it would top Tennessee on that opening night in Neyland Stadium, after putting up a solid effort in a number of different areas. However, the Volunteers notched the final tally in overtime

to narrowly win 20-13.

That moment gave the Bulldogs reassurance that their Week 1 opponent is legitimate.

“We definitely want to have a better showing than Tennessee had,” Davis said. “They’re a tough team and a winning group, so you never know what to expect as far as Game 1.

We’ll go out there and give it our best then see what happens at the end.”

Lamb accounted for 136 (108 passing, 28 rushing) of the team’s 292 total offensive yards in the contest against the Volunteers. He showed spurts of rushing ability against an SEC program, and finished with 505 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in his junior season.

Lamb is one of the select few quarterbacks that Georgia will face with dual-threat capabilities, and last season that didn’t go too well for the Bulldogs as they fell to Georgia Tech, Mississippi and Tennessee — all of which presented a dualthreat option.

With 10 returning starters defensively, Georgia hopes it has the extra dimension covered. “(Lamb’s) an awesome runner and can do many things,” Georgia junior running back Roquan Smith said. “I feel like he can sit back in the pocket, and if everything else fails, he can pull it down and run.”

Aside from Lamb, Appalachian State presents challenges in a number of other facets. The Mountaineers finished 10-3 in 2016 and have their opponents impressed by a fast defensive line, the Sun Belt Player of the Year in Jalin Moore and a dependable wide receiver in Darrynton Evans.

Georgia has a primetime showdown Sept. 9 against Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. But before then, Smart has preached to his team for several months that the opener will be no cakewalk.

“The program is 28-5 in their last 33 games — only Clemson, Ohio State and Alabama have more wins in the last 33 games,” Smart said on SEC Media Days on July 11. “To look past them would be silly.

We tell our kids that they finished ranked higher than we did last year, so we have something to prove as well.”

ATLANTA — The stadium is brand new, but the rivalry between Georgia Tech and No. 25 Tennessee is decades old.

The two old Southeastern Conference members will meet on Labor Day in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic, the second college football game to be played in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday night.

Tennessee leads the alltime series 24-17-2. The teams haven’t played since 1987, when Tennessee won 29-15. The roots for the series go way back. Former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Dodd — after whom the Georgia Tech stadium is named — played quarterback for the Vols before joining the Yellow Jackets’ staff.

“We’re really excited to have the opportunity to display our program on a national level against a quality opponent,” Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said.

There are two main questions surrounding the Georgia Tech offense: Who will start at quarterback and how will the loss of leading rusher Dedrick Mills affect the offense?

The Yellow Jackets, 9-4 in 2016, will have a new player under center. Threeyear starter Justin Thomas graduated after leading the team to a pair of bowl victories. Thomas was the ideal man to run the team’s option attack and was adept and making the right call from the line of scrimmage.

He was an effective passer and durable player who missed only one game.

Johnson hasn’t named a successor to Thomas and the mystery could last until the 8 p.m. kickoff.

There are four players in the mix, led by Matthew Jordan, a run-first quarterback who started one game last year when Thomas was injured, and led the team to a win at Virginia Tech.

Others in the picture include TaQuon Marshall, who took most of the snaps at No. 1 in the spring when Jordan missed time with a foot injury that required surgery, as well as redshirt freshmen Lucas Johnson and Jay Jones.

“I feel real good about that position,” Johnson said. “I think we’ve got four guys at that position that I could call a game for and they’re going to have the luxury of being surrounded by a bunch of guys that had experience and played a lot of football.”

Johnson has also kept his cool in the wake of Mills, who led the team in rushing as a true freshman and was voted first-team Preseason All-ACC. Mills

was dismissed from the team for violation athletic department regulations.

He missed four games last year, three of them for breaking team rules. He has since transferred to a junior college.

“You’d like to have the best player, but I’m not going to rush home and get in a closet and shoot myself,” Johnson said. “We’ve got guys that can play.”

KirVonte Benson won the B-back job in camp and will make the start; he’s smaller than Mills, but has game-breaking speed. True freshman Jerry Howard, an early camp sensation, will likely be the No. 2 player there.

Tennessee has a decision to make at quarterback, too.

Someone must step in and replace Joshua Dobbs, who was a fourthround draft choice by the Pittsburgh Steelers. His predecessor will be either Quinten Dormady, a traditional pocket quarterback, or Jarrett Guarantano, a redshirt freshman with great mobility and a strong arm.

That means running back John Kelly and receiver Jauan Jennings are going to be the main building blocks for the offense. Kelly ran for 630 yards and five touchdowns and Jennings caught 40 passes for 580 yards and seven touchdowns.

The defense will be led by safety Todd Kelly Jr., who led the team with 71 tackles and has eight career interceptions. The special teams are in good hands with returner Evan Berry, who averaged 32.9 yards on kickoff returns, and punter Trevor Daniel, who averaged 44.6 yards and is on the watch list for the Ray Guy Award.

Tennessee got out of the gate with a 5-0 start last year, but the Vols endured a three-game losing streak and lost to Vanderbilt for the third time in five years.

The 9-4 season looked good on paper but wasn’t satisfying to fans or coach Butch Jones.

“We still have a lot of improving to do,” Jones said. “We still have a lot of dreams and goals and aspirations that are out there as a program.”

This will be the second time Tennessee has appeared in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game, the first since beating N.C. State in 2012. Georgia Tech will make its first appearance in the contest.

NASCAR pays homage to its past

Patty Moise made such a lasting impression on Tad Geschickter when they worked together in 1988, when Moise drove in what’s now the Xfinity Series.

Geschickter worked for Proctor and Gamble, which sponsored the Jacksonville, Fla., driver with its Crisco ButterFlavored shortening. He was impressed how she handled herself in the race car and as a representative of her sponsor.

Twenty-nine years later, Geschickter and Moise will be reunited during NASCAR’s throwback weekend at the Darlington Raceway.

Now a car owner in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, Geschickter’s No. 37 Chevrolet will be painted to resemble Moise’s 1988 car.

“I was shocked when I found out,” Moise said.

“I had no idea what was going on. Elton (Sawyer, husband) called me because he saw it on Twitter. He didn’t know about it, either. What’s really nice is I drove the 37 car, too. I’m really honored by this.”

Most of the cars in Saturday’s Sports Clips Haircuts VFW 200 for Xfinity cars and Sunday night’s Bojangles Southern 500 (6 p.m., NBCSN) will feature throwback paint schemes from the past. The program started in 2015, and it has evolved into one of the most-popular events on the schedule.

“The throwback weekend is one of the coolest weekends we have on the schedule, and Darlington Raceway is one of my favorite tracks as it is,” driver Chris Buescher said. “I look forward to taking our No. 37 Cheerios Chevrolet and putting on a great show Labor Day weekend.”

Gladiators re-sign versatile forward Frazee

The Atlanta Gladiators announced the re-signing of forward Thomas Frazee on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, the 27-year-old Vancouver native was signed to a twoway AHL contract by the San Antonio Rampage.

“He’s a guy who paid his dues and has done the right things and is finally getting rewarded with an AHL contract,” said Gladiators former head coach Andy Brandt, who signed Frazee before accepting a job in the college ranks Aug. 11. “I think that situation there is extremely vital to a hockey team because it shows guys if you stick with it, if you put in your time and you’re dedicated and you care, things are going to turn around for you.

“Nowadays, players play two years and then they say, ‘I’m not going to make it, I’m done.’ And I understand that. Money doesn’t really allow you to continue. You don’t make a lot of money

in this league, but I think guys who stick it out will get rewarded eventually.

He’s a guy who stuck it out and got rewarded.”

Right before Frazee came to Atlanta in a three-team trade in June 2015, he was ready to retire.

He had a productive major junior career in the WHL with 188 points and 247 penalty minutes in 313 games. He played his rookie season in the CHL with Quad City, then spent 201415 with three ECHL teams, finishing in Greenville.

Brandt acquired the versa-

tile 6-foot-4 forward during the offseason and Frazee opted to give it another shot.

“To be honest, if it wasn’t for Brando when I first came here, I’d be working 9 to 5,” Frazee said. “My first year (in the ECHL) I bounced around and I wasn’t too happy with the way the season went. After some long talks with Andy, he gave me a really good opportunity and I like to think I took advantage of it.

“It’s funny how hockey works. Three years ago, I was ready to be completely done with it. I wasn’t too

happy going to the rink. But coming to Atlanta really helped me enjoy it again. I owe Brando a lot for that.”

Frazee has put up 86 points in 131 games over the last two seasons for Atlanta, playing in virtually every situation.

“Here’s why I like Frazee a lot — he’s a big kid who skates well and can play the wing or the middle,” Brandt said. “He can play power play. He’s learning the PK side of things. He’s a competitor, not just in games, but he competes hard in practice. He makes guys better in practice.”

Frazee has a more defensively oriented role in the AHL. He was loaned to San Antonio last December and made a good impression filling in for some injured players. The Rampage asked for him back once the Gladiators season ended and he skated in a few more games there this spring.

“In the AHL, he’s a third-, fourth-line guy expected to get in on the forecheck, be physical, be defensively reliable,” Brandt said. “Down here, he’s ex-

pected to do all those things, but he’s also expected to produce for us. He has that ability. That’s why I say he’s a versatile player, he can do all those things.

“I know San Antonio has a great deal of interest.

That’s why they’ve signed him. They’re excited to see what he does now that he’s a little more comfortable.”

Frazee attended San Antonio’s training camp last season and it helped when he joined the team around Christmas.

“I felt good up there,” he said. “Andy had a whole bunch to do with that, too.

To be honest, when I first came to Atlanta, I was pretty much one-dimensional.

I thought scoring goals and getting points was enough to get me to the next level.

He showed me I’d have to play a two-way game.”

San Antonio got in touch again early this summer about a contract. Getting an AHL deal for the first time, Frazee leaned on Atlanta captain Derek Nesbitt for advice. Nesbitt has played more than half his pro career in the AHL.

“I was bugging him quite a bit, but he was always good about answering questions,” Frazee said. “That’s one of the things he brings to the table that’s so invaluable.”

Frazee has been skating with some NHLers this offseason in Vancouver, including Ryan NugentHopkins, but is headed to Gwinnett in a few days to train with Nesbitt.

He’ll be here for several weeks before San Antonio’s camp starts.

“Atlanta has become a second home to me,” Frazee said. “It makes you want to stay and see what a playoff run would be like.”

He’s anxious to get the Gladiators back into Kelly Cup contention and talked with newly hired head coach Chuck Weber last week about the upcoming season.

“He seemed really excited about the job and the players he was going to have,” Frazee said.

“I think it’s going to be a really good fit. I think we got lucky with the type of coach he is.”

From Staff Reports The Mitsubishi Electric Classic, Gwinnett County’s stop on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, has reached a milestone in its charitable fundraising.

Tournament officials announced Tuesday that this year’s event, the fifthannual tournament which ran April 10-16 at TPC Sugarloaf, raised a record $756,643 for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Special Needs Schools of Gwinnett and other local charities.

That brings the total amount donated by the tournament to charitable organizations in Gwinnett County and throughout metro Atlanta to nearly $2 million since it began in 2013.

“In five years, to be able to raise almost $2 million is tremendous,” tournament director Monte Ortel said Tuesday.

“I’ve been at other events, but for one year to raise over $756,000, it goes to a lot of different things, really. Obviously, you have to have the support of corporate sponsors and the (Gwinnett County and metro Atlanta) community. You also have to have a good beneficiary charity like Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Special Needs Schools of Gwinnett. It’s really what the PGA Tour is about — giving back.”

Likewise, the tournament’s executive director, Stan Hall, lauded the efforts of many people surrounding the tournament, its sponsors and beneficiary charities for making the successful year’s fundraising possible.

“One of the primary objectives of the Mitsubishi Electric Classic is a genuine, philanthropic vision,” Hall said in a statement released Tuesday.

Jordan Pate went 1-for-3 for the Eagles with the eventual gamewinning RBI. Sophia Mooney also went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Mackenzie Chappell had a hit and an RBI. Mooney started and went eight innings with one run allowed in getting a no-decision, while the win went to Chappell, who pitched three innings of relief with one run.

Chandler Dennis started for North (5-4, 0-1), who delivered a complete game with eight strikeouts. Jazmin Scott had two hits, including a double and an RBI, while Lauren Prescott tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer.

Dacula 11, Lanier 9 DACULA — Elsie Igberaese of Dacula hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to help the Falcons pull away for an 11-9 win at home over Lanier in a Region 8-AAAAAA game.

Also helping on offense were Jin Fileo (3-for-4, RBI), Alexis Davis (2-for-3, RBI), Jeah Williams (2-for4, double, three RBIs), Mary Beth Lord (2-for-3) and Sydney Boulware (2-for-2).

Boulware also picked up the win to up her mark to 4-1, striking out seven in seven innings.

Lanier (4-5, 1-2) was led by Ansley Thompson, who was 2-for-3 with a solo homer and three runs. Payton Franklin (3-for-3, two runs, RBI), Laura Ann Acker (two doubles, two RBIs, run) and Makenzie Wismer (2-for-5, run) each added to Lanier’s offense.

Providence took an early lead with four runs in the top of the first, but Hebron (1-7, 1-3) pushed ahead by scoring three runs in the fourth, fifth and six innings each.

Mary Blake Whittington led Hebron with three hits and two RBIs, while Abby Dobbs drove in two runs on two hits. Carly Bales also had three hits with Sydney Harris getting two hits.

Providence (0-9, 0-4) was led by Liberty Schultz, who had three hits and scored three runs. Molly Legg added a two-run double, while Margaret Ann Levy drove in two runs with a single. Claire Owens also had three hits.
