Newton to make history as Norcross mayor Unchallenged candidate will be first black person to hold post
BY CURT YEOMANS

Longtime Norcross City Councilman Craig L. Newton will be the city’s new mayor and make city and county history in the process. Newton was the only person who qualified to
run for mayor this week since the seat’s current occupant, Bucky Johnson, decided to not run for a sixth term. That means he will automatically become Norcross’ new leader. It will be the second time in his political career that Newton, who was Norcross’ fi rst AfricanAmerican councilman, will
make history. Gwinnett political observers and officials with the Gwinnett Historical Society couldn’t recall any city in the county ever having an African-American mayor before. “After serving several terms as a city council member, I am both honored and humbled that our
citizens have given me the opportunity to serve as the next mayor of Norcross in 2018,” Newton wrote on his Facebook page on Friday. “With your continued support and with God’s guidance, we will continue to make Norcross a great city for all to live, work and play.” No new candidates

To understand Ayden Abercrombie’s Eagle Scout project, it’s important to know one thing: He has always loved the American flag. The 15-year-old Snellville resident is a member of Boy Scout Troop 548’s honor guard team, and he earned his Eagle Scout rank by making flag drop-off boxes for the county’s OneStop Community Centers. The idea behind the boxes is to give people a place Ayden Abercrombie to drop off their old and worn out flags so they can be properly retired. “He has always had a thing about the flag since he was learning to talk,” said Dean Abercrombie, the teen’s father. “The

Ed Sheeran took the stage to deafening cheers and applause to play two sold-out shows this weekend. Selling out two nights at Infinite Energy Arena isn’t a common accomplishment. The last performance to even play two nights in the Duluth venue was Mumford and Sons. They also sold out both shows on April 11, 2016, and April 12, MORE ONLINE 2016. Sheeran fan and Atlanta resident Ffion Button, 14, said she wasn’t at all surprised the red-headed British musician had joined Mumford and Sons in selling out two shows in a row. She attended Sheeran’s Friday night show. On a scale of one to 10, Button said her love for Sheeran ranked at about a 20. “A lot of my friends wanted to see him, too,” she said. Many of them would attend the Saturday night show.
