Police look for details on murder in Lilburn BY ISABEL HUGHES isabel.hughes@gwinnettdailypost.com

Lilburn police are asking the public to come forward with information regarding a shooting outside the Brunswick Zone bowling alley in Lilburn that left a 20-year-old man dead. At approximately 11:15 p.m. Sunday, Lilburn Police Department officers responded to the bowling alley, which is Rahmier Gardner located on Lawrenceville Highway, after receiving reports of a shooting, officials said. When officers arrived on scene, they found Snellville resident and Brookwood High School graduate Rahmier Gardner suffering from “what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds,” a news release said. “Despite the responding officer’s efforts at medical intervention, the victim was pronounced deceased by responding

Gwinnett County commissioners will decide Wednesday if voters will get to cast ballots this fall on whether the county should join MARTA. The Board of Commissioners will hold a special called meeting at 8 a.m. Wednesday in the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center auditorium to vote on holding a referendum in conjunction with the state’s general election. The board will also vote on a proposed contract with MARTA at the meeting. Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash Charlotte Nash isn’t talking on the record yet about the details of the contract, but she did express confidence in what will go before her colleagues for approval. “I’m pleased to be at the point where we have what I consider to be a good contract for the board to consider,” Nash said. It has been decades since the last time Gwinnett voters cast ballots on the issue of the county of joining MARTA, and commissioners aren’t in agreement on whether to go forward with a referendum this time.

A Gwinnett County man in his early 20s drowned off West Bank Park in the Forsyth County portion of Lake Lanier when swimming with two friends Monday evening, officials said. Forsyth and Gwinnett County fire and law enforcement officials responded to the lake “a few minutes before 7:30 p.m.” after both agencies received 911 calls about an in-progress drowning, according to Forsyth County Fire Department Division Chief Jason Shivers, a spokesman for the department. “Forsyth fire personnel were dispatched to a report of a drowning on the Forsyth portion of Lake Lanier, but Gwinnett fire also responded to assist, (given) they had been receiving 911 calls also,” Shivers said. “There was an extreme language barrier, and neither agency was sure where the event was, so Gwinnett was searching on their side of the lake, but calls were also coming from our side of the lake.” Officials were able to connect dispatchers to the 911 callers, who were at the Forsyth County park. They told responding officials where their friend had drowned. “It was a witnessed drowning, so we had a strong indication of where he was last seen and where he went underwater, which contributed to the finding of the body rather quickly,” Shivers said. This map from the Connect Gwinnett Transit Plan shows a possible second expansion of heavy rail, or an alternative light rail line, in Gwinnett during a possible long-range Phase II of the plan. Gwinnett commissioners are expected to vote today on approving a contract to join MARTA, and call for a referendum asking voters to approve the county joining the transit system. When Gwinnett last held a referendum on joining MARTA nearly 30 years ago, voters overwhelmingly voted against it. Although there is some support on the commission for holding a referendum, Com-

missioner John Heard issued a statement Thursday vehemently opposing the idea, saying a proposed agreement was “fatally flawed.” A MARTA spokeswoman confirmed Friday that the agency was negotiating a con-
