Schools added to state flexibility contract BY KEITH FARNER

SUWANEE — Seeking to add schools to its contract with the Georgia Board of Education, the Gwinnett School Board on Thursday approved five schools to a contract that couples flexibility with accountability

targets. The agreement, previously known as the Investing in Educational Excellence, is now called Strategic Waivers School Systems. While the Gwinnett School of Math, Science and Technology and the Gwinnett Online Campus no longer operate as charter schools, they were added to the

agreement with Discovery High School, which opened last year, and Baldwin Elementary and Coleman Middle, both of which opened last week. The Georgia Department of Education considers the SWSS contracts as a way to offer flexibility to local school districts to increase student performance. The

original state law was passed in 2008. Gwinnett County Public Schools entered into the IE2 contract with the state in 2014 and included the other three schools that opened last year under that agreement. The district has prepared a letter of intent to send to the GaBOE that outlines the local school

board resolution. “We also have plans which indicate targets, grade-level served, student demographic information and the most current statewide assessment data for each of these schools that will follow these, just as all of our other schools have,” said Steve Flynt, associate superintendent of

school improvement and operations. Gwinnett’s SWSS partnership contract provides local schools and the school district with flexibility from 14 laws and the accompanying State Board rules. This flexibility is coupled with accountability targets

Tournament gives awards to volunteers BY KEITH FARNER

SUWANEE — They are plumbers, engineers, county employees and small business owners. But on Wednesday evenings in the fall, they are painters. And while many of them come as fathers who have sons on the team, they stay for the camaraderie. Some are just learning where to go, while others are wondering why they’re standing out in the steamy August heat for an eighth — or is it ninth? — season. They are the crew that each week meets at “The Hill,” to paint the Collins Hill High School football field, from hash marks to “Eagles” in the end zone. DULUTH — The annual Champions Tour golf tournament at TPC Sugarloaf recently honored two volunteers who were active in the April tournament. Fran Eckert was named Leadership Volunteer of the Year for her role as driving range chairwoman for the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, and Lisa Meznar was named Volunteer of the Year for her contributions on the uniform distribution and volunteer shuttle committees. Eckert was often one of the first volunteers to arrive in the morning and the last to leave each evening. Her committee was fully staffed and scheduled months before the tournament. Tournament officials said when other committees needed assistance or were understaffed, Eckert was quick to offer one of her own volunteers to help, assuming the extra workload herself without complaint. Meznar’s positive attitude and
