“These latest ARC population estimates show that the Atlanta region is resilient and continues to be a place of opportunity and a magnet for people seeking a high quality of life,” said Kerry Armstrong, the ARC board’s chairman and a representative of Gwinnett on the regional body, in a statement. The new population data pegs Gwinnett’s population at 877,100 people, which is

up from 859,800 in 2015 and 805,321 in 2010. It comes at a time when the ARC said population growth is picking up and counties are growing faster than they have since the Great Recession began. Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash said there are several reasons why she felt people would want to move to the county, ranging from employment to recreational and

educational opportunities. “Gwinnett continues to grow because people are attracted by our great schools, by job opportunities and by quality of life amenities like outstanding public safety services and nationally acclaimed parks,” she said. “Then there are factors like housing choices, moderate taxes, an excellent library system and varied dining and cultural experiences.

“All in all, Gwinnett is a community where people not only want to live, but also work, learn and play.” In all, the 10-county metro area added 69,200 people over the last year, a growth spurt of 1.6 percent, according to the ARC. Cobb County had the third largest growth, taking in 9,900 new residents, followed by Cherokee (6,800

LAWRENCEVILLE — Kira Freeman was equal parts excited and emotional as she stood outside her daughter’s new residence hall on Thursday morning. The Georgia Gwinnett College mother has been through this before with another child at Northeastern University in Boston. But she still wasn’t quite sure about the new experience her daughter, Jamie Eason, was set to begin. “I think it’s going pretty well, I think she’s 90 percent there,” said Freeman of her daughter, a recent graduate of North Atlanta High School.

Only being about an hour away is a lot easier for mom to swallow, she said. Eason plans to study psychology and expects to eventually transfer to the University of Georgia. Of four choices, Freeman said Eason was initially skeptical of GGC but then fell in love with the school. “The staff and how they nurture, how inviting they were, friendly, how they welcomed her,” Freeman said. A Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit sergeant is earning praise after helping care for a man in medical distress on a plane as the pilot diverted the flight. Sgt. Paul Corso was flying back to Atlanta from Bloomington, Ill., where he spent three days promoting “Guardians of the Night,” a web series about K-9 units, according to well-known dog trainer Victoria Stilwell. Stilwell, who posted a blog about the incident, and Corso had made the trip together. “We were about halfway through the See FLIGHT, Page 8A
