The husband and wife were well-known in the local Polish-Catholic community and respected doctors, the husband a veteran of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the wife of the Emory University School of Medicine. They had been out celebrating Gurtler-Krawczynska’s birthday with their daughter. The deaths — and the

Police have said a Johns Creek police officer attempted to pull over Thomas, who was accompanied by his 18-year-old son, for a standard equipment violation. Thomas instead allegedly fled, reaching 83 mph. The crash also broke

Ask Connie Wiggins how she agreed to become Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful’s executive director about 30 years ago, and she’ll tell you it was like a lot of other decisions she’s made in life. She was already working with the organization as Sugar Hill’s municipal representative on the board of directors. After doing that for about 2 1/2 years, the then-Sugar Hill councilwoman was asked to take over at the environmental group. Wiggins said she didn’t hesitate when the request came.

You just need to get the right people involved, and they help you solve things. … I wouldn’t trade (that decision) for the world. The race saw regulars like Pigs in a Blanket, Holy Rollers and Bed of Moses. But Chariots of Fire, a team made up of students from Mountain View and Collins Hill, came out with the best time of 30.1 seconds on the 228-yard course around the Lawrenceville Square. “It was very challenging,” said Akeem Tullinagwe, a bed pusher for the team. “We practiced about two days a week to get ready for this and it paid off.” For Phillip Johnson, who is the president of the Family Promise board of directors, the bed race is a fun thing for the community. “It’s different. It’s fun. It’s a way to get people together,” he said. “Some of the teams are in it for the competition, while others are out here just to have fun.” See RACE, Page 9A
