Program teaches students about community, government

LAWRENCEVILLE — Law enforcement officials testifying before a medical marijuana study committee Wednesday in Lawrenceville revealed a seemingly evergrowing receptiveness to controlled use of the drug in Georgia — but they still have strong concerns. Speaking to the committee composed of members of the state House and Senate, Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said he wanted to make sure whatever law the legislators come up with doesn’t mirror the actions of Colorado. “Colorado is not the path we want to take,” Porter said during the hearing at Georgia Gwinnett College, referencing the western state’s recently relaxed laws allowing recreational use of the drug. But he added: “…the prosecutors of this state have no interest in depriving anyone

SUWANEE — With a dream to one day become a doctor, Shine Lee didn’t give much thought to how a city works. That changed about a year ago when she applied for the Suwanee Youth Leaders program. Now she may consider a career within city government, including possibly as a city manager. “It was a totally new world,” said Lee, a junior at North Gwinnett High. Lee was one of more than 50 students at North and Peachtree Ridge High who participated in the first Suwanee Youth Leaders program, designed for high school students to develop leadership skills and learn more about city government and the local community. The students collected more than 700 community volunteer hours, and city leaders said the program helped them develop a deeper relationship with the schools. The program started in January and held its final event on Saturday. Among the events the students participated in or volunteered for were Suwanee’s August concert, which featured the band Everclear and a wing festival, a Food Truck Friday event, Suwanee Fest and Leadercast, a one-day leadership event at the Gwinnett Center that featured leaders from
