GWBC October 2023 Newsletter

It’s National Women’s Small Business Month and every day I’m inspired by our incredible women business enterprises (WBEs) dedicated to growing their businesses, promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in their organizations and encouraging their fellow female business leaders. At Greater Women’s Business Council® (GWBC®), women businesses are as essential and substantial as larger corporations. We value each and every one of these entrepreneurs and business leaders and honestly, they are the reason why we spend every day working to find new opportunities to help accelerate the growth of their organizations.

According to Georgia.org, Women Business Enterprises are one of the fastest growing segments in Georgia and the state ranks #5 in the U.S. for greatest number of women-owned firms and metro Atlanta also ranks #5 within the state Georgia also ranks second (behind Florida) in growth in the number of women-owned firms and seventh in economic growth. Those numbers are encouraging and inspiring to me and our WBEs!

In North Carolina, there are just under a million small businesses with women-owned businesses making up 44.3%. North Carolina small business employment grew by 22.7% between 1995 and 2019, which exceeded the national small business employment growth rate. Women own just as many businesses in South Carolina. With over 460,000 small businesses in the state, women owned businesses comprise 44.2%! South Carolina’s small

business employment grew even more than North Carolina with a 28.2% growth rate between 1995-2019.

Becoming WBENC (Women’s Business Enterprise National Council) certified with GWBC provides our WBEs with an opportunity to leverage their businesses for accelerated growth. A WBENC certification validates that a business is at least 51% owned, operated and controlled by a woman or women and is used as a vetting tool for corporations looking to meet their supplier diversity spend goals while identifying innovative suppliers. GWBC isn’t just about getting certified though. We also want to assist as many women founder-led businesses as possible through networking events, funding opportunities, education resources, recognized awards and connections with other WBEs and supplier diversity leaders in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

Learn more about the value of joining a network of successful women business owners who are scaling their businesses every day. Please visit our newly redesigned website and encourage your fellow WBEs to get certified and get involved

Always in service, Roz Lewis

Did You Attend the Power of Partnering (POP) Event?

Last month, we gathered for the Power of Partnering, a half-day event featuring women entrepreneurs, business leaders, corporations and procurement professionals to educate, network and create substantial opportunities to reach their business goals.

Hosted by The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, this event featured a powerful keynote presentation by Dr. Janelle Williams, the former Principal Adviser for the Community Economic Development team at The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.

Regarding our region, Dr. Williams pointed out that Georgia has 533,030 women-owned firms, and North Carolina boasts 350,199 while South Carolina has 171,056. In Georgia, 48% are Black-owned and only 8% are Latina/Hispanic – however the revenue share is much lower for non-minority women-owned firms. In fact, she provided a powerful quote to back up the statistics – “If the average revenue of minority, women-owned businesses matched that of white women-owned businesses, 4 million new jobs and $981 billion in revenue would be created.” Really good food for thought.

Attendees also enjoyed a discussion panel featuring Teri Dennison, district director, U.S. SBA Georgia District Office, Tina Baker, president/founder, Cadence Group, Veronica Maldonado-Torres, president/CEO, Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and GWBC’s Roz Lewis. The panel discussed public policy trends that impact small businesses.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s Power of Partnering event!
