Reflecting back on the year, so many great things have happened in the Village of Webster. First, our office staff welcomed Kris Tallon as the Village’s Code Enforcement Officer. Village Hall is open 8:00am–4:30pm Monday through Thursday and 8:00–11:00am on Friday. Those seeking a new passport or renewal are asked to call for an appointment. All other business-tax payments, building permits, etc. — are available daily without an appointment.

Our friendly staff are ready to help. Board meetings are open to the public at 6:30pm, on the second and fourth Thursday of the month with some exceptions.

Meetings take place in the Village Board room and may be viewed on the Village Facebook page.

Secondly, our DPW staff have worked hard to keep winter streets open and summer flowers growing. Roads have been micro paved, new sewers and street gutters have been poured and parks well maintained among other projects.

Thirdly, the Webster BID again provided a wonderful schedule of entertainment in the Village. Friday night concerts, beer and wine walks, family nights on Main Street and Vets Park and the two-day JazzFest have brought so many people into our Village.

Fourth, our Village welcomed many new businesses to the community: Root and Rituals, Roc Dance, the Pink Collar Society, Kiss Me Cookie, Emerald Financial, the Sweet Square Bakery, the Main Dive, the Mary Wee Pub and Annette’s, to name a few.

Fall featured our 911 memorial ceremony in Veteran’s Memorial Park, Veterans Day ceremony and luncheon, and the Trick-or-Treat trail. This year will again be capped off in December by White Christmas in the Village with Santa and his workshops and the Parade of lights down Main Street.

We look to the year before us, 2026, with great expectation and anticipation that it will be better than the last. Yes, there are challenges and decisions that must be made. The finishing of the STP project, the New York Forward Grant and implementation, the Fast New York Grant to rehabilitate Panama, Orchard and Mitcheldean roads, the potential of boundaries with the Town, as well as new businesses to attract and fill the vacancies on Main St., North and South Avenues.

Yes, there are great challenges to be met, but with these challenges come great opportunity. Friends of the

Public Library

On January 6th, 1959, a meeting was called by the chairman of the library board, inviting patrons to attend a meeting of the Friends of the Webster Public Library. The first meeting took place on January 15th that year.

66 years later, the Friends of the Webster Public Library, a 501(c)(3) organization, still meet every third Wednesday every other month.

The Friends are library supporters who are committed to strengthening the library and helping it provide the best service possible to the community. They are motivated, hardworking volunteers who enjoy working together.

They maintain an association of individuals interested in books and libraries; Promote and support the WPL, its services, facilities, programs, and needs; Sponsor programs that promote the cultural and education needs of the community; Support financially library services, programs, and materials not covered in the library operation budget through fundraising activities, such as the automated wheelchair, Express Books, and book discussion kits available to patrons.

The Friends’ biggest fundraising events are the book sales held twice a year, once in spring

and once in the fall. Recently, they added Vintage and Collectable book sales throughout the year as well.

The Friends of the Webster Public Library organize and operate the ongoing lobby bookstore. The Schroeder High School Tech Team and Paul Donnell recently installed new shelves for the bookstore, and Lobby Store volunteers are quite knowledgeable of authors and books and can help you find any book you are looking for.

Members love to visit with friends from the Friends of the WPL, such as at their annual Pot Luck Luncheon and annual Dessert Social.

Join one of the many committees working to support the library, perhaps volunteer with Book Sales, Fundraising, One-Time Projects, Working in the Lobby Book Store/Sorting room, Publicity/Media, Publicity/Create Event Signage.

through their Spring and Fall book sales, their Vintage & Collectable book sales, and other fundraisers go directly to the library to help with programs and events that are not included in their yearly budget. Last year they were able to give the library a check for $80,000.

Webster Park

From drop-in swim sessions and aqua fitness classes to competitive swim and dive teams, the Webster Aquatic Center is the hub for all things water. Families enjoy special events, lessons, and Watercize programs. Programs are open to everyone, with discounted rates for members.

Registration is handled through the Webster Central School District’s Community Education Department.

One of Monroe County’s largest parks, Webster Park spans 550 acres along Lake Ontario. Visitors can hike evergreen-covered hills, camp overnight, or picnic with a lakeside view. The park features a fishing pier, tennis

and pickleball courts, youth camping areas, and a campground that accommodates tents, trailers, and RVs. Lodges and shelters are available to rent, ranging from rustic picnic spaces to fully equipped kitchens at the White House and Lakefront Lodge.

Webster Parks & Recreation

A hike through this preserve near Lake and Phillips Roads offers both natural beauty and a quirky surprise: a collection of vintage cars left abandoned deep in the woods. Maintained

by Friends of Webster Trails, the preserve is a favorite spot for hikers who enjoy a mix of mystery and nostalgia.

Webster Spray Parks

Two spray parks offer a refreshing escape in summer.

The First Responders Spray Park on Chiyoda Drive honors Webster’s firefighters, police, and EMTs with a themed playground and splash pad featuring a fire hydrant sprayer, Dalmatian fountain, and fire truck slide. Ridgecrest Spray Park, near the village center, includes an adjacent playground and skate park, making it a great stop for families.

A sports complex unlike any other, Challenger Miracle Field was designed so athletes with disabilities can experience the joy of play without barriers.

The cushioned, rubberized turf is completely wheelchairaccessible, with painted bases and pitching mounds instead of raised obstacles.

Enlarged dugouts, ADAcompliant restrooms, and a fully accessible pavilion, complete with 12 wheelchairfriendly picnic tables built by Webster Schroeder’s GeoTech class, ensure inclusivity for all.

The Karpus Family Playground provides a sensory-rich play space where children of all abilities can play side by side.

Webster Recreation Ice Rink

Thanks to a partnership between Webster Parks & Recreation and the Webster Rotary Club, skaters can enjoy a picturesque outdoor ice rink each winter. A warming hut is available on site, though skaters should bring their own equipment.

Friends of Webster Trails

(FWT) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization enthusiastically serving as the volunteer arm of the Webster Parks and Recreation Department.

When FWT was established in 1997 its only activity was the maintenance of the Hojack Trail.

With the Town’s acquisition of open space,

FWT has now built more than 20 miles of trails in the Whiting Road Nature Preserve, Gosnell Big Woods Preserve, Four Mile Creek Preserve and other properties. These trails provide a place for hiking, cycling, running, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. More info at webstertrails.org

Shopping locally means that more money will stay in the community. According to recent research from Civic Economics, local eateries return nearly 79 percent of revenue to the community, compared to just over 30 percent for chain restaurants. Overall, for every $100 spent at a local business, around $73 remains in the community, versus roughly $43 when shopping at a non-locally owned business.

Local business owners typically are inclined to go the extra mile for their customers and are personally invested in the services and products they are selling. As a result, shopping locally tends to be a personalized experience. Furthermore, a local business owner may be more amenable to ordering products for specific clientele. Such personalized service is typically not accessible when shopping big box stores or other shops where owners are off-site.

Lines are short

Waiting in long lines for checkout or to pick up merchandise ordered online can drain consumers’ energy and contribute to stress. Local businesses tend to have short lines and small crowds, which can lead to a more pleasant shopping experience.

Generates tax revenue

Local businesses generate more tax revenue per sales dollar, according to Rubicon, a digital marketplace for waste and recycling businesses.

Taxes paid by local small businesses go to support schools, parks, roads, and other programs that benefit the community as well.

Support non-profits

Local businesses often support good work in the community, such as non-profit groups. These can include schools and sports teams, among other groups. According to Dr. Sue Lynn Sasser, professor of economics at the University of Central Oklahoma, studies indicate non-profits “receive 250 percent more support from small businesses than larger ones.”

Support other local businesses

Local businesses support other local businesses by buying and selling among each other. A local, independently owned restaurant may source its ingredients from local farms, which means visitors to such eateries are supporting multiple local businesses each time they dine out.

Small businesses are a boon to the economy, particularly local economies. These enterprises help their communities in a multitude of ways.

Nick, Service Manager

For Nick, Volvo’s Service Manager, a strong work ethic and a genuine care for people have been guiding principles throughout life. He says, “I grew up in a small town, working on a farm, learning good work ethics and how to be kind to people, which has helped me a ton in my travels.” Those early lessons continue to shape his approach to leadership and customer care every day.

“In the auto industry things go wrong — cars break, people get upset, and it makes me feel really proud when we can take a bad situation and make it better,” Nick explains. “I like to pretend I am Mr. Fix-It.” That drive to find solutions and restore trust is at the heart of what he does.

Nick’s commitment extends far beyond daily repairs. “I will never let a car leave the service department in a manner of being unsafe,” he says, a promise that speaks to his deep sense of responsibility to both customers and his team.

Professionally and personally, Nick strives “to leave a lasting legacy to be the best I can be both at home and at work.” His philosophy on life is simple but sincere: “Live, Laugh, Love.”

When he’s not managing the service floor, Nick enjoys collecting shot glasses from his travels, a hobby that’s grown into a collection of several hundred. And when it comes to favorite vehicle, his pick reflects his sense of fun and curiosity: The Volvo C70 hard top convertible, noting that “as the top opens and closes it looks like a real-life Transformer.”

For Ruby Black, Executive Assistant and Director of Community and Employee Engagement at Volvo Cars Rochester, every day brings something new— and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Born in Texas and raised in Maine, Ruby made her way to New York, where she now calls Penfield home with her husband and their two rescue dogs, PePe and Mateo—both adopted from Puerto Rico through MAD Rescue in Albion.

At Volvo, no two days are the same, Ruby says.

She organizes employee or customer events, delivers vehicles to customers, and coordinates with other Volvo dealerships. She works with managers on hiring and employee satisfaction and represents the dealership in the community through hiring events, sponsorships, and volunteer work.

Ruby’s passion is rooted in connection, and she says, “All personal strengths are recognized and utilized to make sure everyone, customers, employees, and the community, has a great experience.”

Outside of work, Ruby channels that same energy into Soles4Souls, a nonprofit that turns donated shoes into opportunity. In 2024, Ruby collected 10,000 pairs of shoes and this year, they’ve already collected more than 11,000. Ruby is also an active member of the Penfield Business Chamber, connecting with incredible people across the area.

Her favorite Volvo? The XC60, “the perfect size for my daily commute and road trips with my husband, PePe, and Mateo, and all the shoes we collect along the way!”

Ruby’s philosophy is simple: “Do good every day—and try to be better than yesterday.” It’s a motto that shines through in everything she does, both at Volvo and beyond.

For Jimmy, Sales Consultant at Volvo, the automotive world isn’t just a career — it’s part of his DNA. “I have the car industry in my blood,” he says. Raised just blocks from Ford’s Highland Park plant, most famous for being where Henry Ford invented the moving assembly line, Jimmy’s father worked on the line at the famous Ford River Rouge plant.

At 23, Jimmy began his own automotive journey as a corporate district manager for Ford Motor Company. Since then, he has held roles as a sales, finance, and general manager, even serving as an interim car dealer, all experiences that have led him to what he calls his “happy place” at Volvo, where he gets to “interface directly with customers every day and sell them the best cars on the market.”

“I love everything about cars,” Jimmy says. “We live in a car culture and will continue to do so for many, many, many years.” Helping customers find the right fit brings him joy, and he says, his goal is simple: “To have satisfied customers who know I am a phone call or text away.”

Jimmy’s favorite car is the C70 convertible with Polestar software, saying “They are fun to drive and affordable modern classics.” A former competitive tennis player, taught by his father from age two, Jimmy still brings the focus and discipline to his work, saying, “Focus forward. It’s hard sometimes, but necessary to get to the next goal.”

Growing up in Churchville, Alexandria never imagined her path would lead to managing a Volvo sales team. She began her automotive journey as a cashier and receptionist in the service department.

She has worked her way through the Business Development Center, into sales, and eventually helped build the dealership’s internet sales team.

“I love getting to know my customers and making the sales process fun and easy for them,” she says. After a record year on the sales team and learning the finance department, Alexandria was recently promoted to Sales Manager. “I am so excited to see how I can impact the dealership, customers, and Garber in this role.”

Her favorite part of the job is making car buying as effortless as possible. Since most customers have very busy schedules, “We help them complete a majority of their research before ever coming in to the dealership via text, email, and phone.”

Her professional goal is to become a managing partner with the Garber organization, a company whose values and mission she deeply believes in.

Outside of work, Alexandria enjoys art, poetry, and racing, especially dirt car racing and NASCAR. Her favorite vehicle? “My 1992 Volvo 240,” she says, noting its iconic safety innovations and blueon-blue design. And when life gets challenging, she lives by one simple truth: “Sometimes you need to put it on a leaf, and let it float down the river.”

Annually, the Webster Chamber of Commerce business members nominate candidates for Business Person of the Year, who have made a significant impact on the role of business within the community. The honoree must be a member of the Chamber for at least 18 months and be active in the Chamber, always willing to go above and beyond, including being a leader that motivates others. Their community participation must include time, talent, or money through projects, clubs, churches, or not-for-profit organizations. The honoree is chosen by the Chamber Board of Directors. The 2025 Business Person of the Year is Rich Marlin, from Edward Jones. In addition to a plaque, visibility is given through the Chamber’s website, newsletter, events, and Social Media. The Town and Village of Webster are blessed to have a great many active projects taking place throughout the community. Public works, infrastructure, parks and recreation, transportation improvements, Main Street revitalization, the revamping of dilapidated structures, master planning projects intended to foster a renewed vision for the future, and a bevy of private-sector investments, all taking place throughout Webster’s 35 square miles. A common thread linking many of these activities is the Webster Economic Development Alliance – the community’s solution to the need for a coordinated economic development approach across the Town and Village of Webster.

Formed in 2008 as a Local Development Corporation, WEDA (or the Alliance) is a public-private partnership with five members: the Town and Village of Webster, Webster Central Schools, the Webster Chamber of Commerce, and the Village Business Improvement District. The Alliance was formed to speak with a unified voice for economic development in Webster and to promote growth and revitalization in the community. A key role of WEDA is to facilitate the planning and implementation of strategic projects in Webster, including securing necessary funding to bring projects to fruition. Additionally, WEDA functions as the community’s local site selector, and was responsible for coordinating the arrival of the $650m fairlife® project into Webster.

Since 2014, WEDA has secured over $15,000,000 in State and Federal assistance for a variety of local projects, representing a return-on-investment of $18.87 for each $1.00 contributed by the corporation’s five members.

In particular, 2024 was a momentous year for Webster. In February, Governor Hochul awarded the Village $4.5m in downtown revitalization funding for Main Street, parks and building improvements.

This was followed up by the generous support from Senator Schumer and Congressman Morelle to secure $500,000 in Housing and Urban Development funding towards infrastructure improvements that will facilitate the revitalization of a 75-acre Xerox site on Phillips Road into a new mixed-use neighborhood. Central to each of these victories was the Alliance and its steadfast approach to building relationships and awareness at the State and Federal levels that Webster is indeed a community worthy of investment.

In 2026 and beyond, the Webster Economic Development Alliance will remain focused on revitalization efforts in the West Webster Hamlet, Village Downtown, and the Xerox Campus, seeking to make Webster a community of choice for living, working, investing and playing.

by Charlotte Phillips, Roc Dance is a studio born of a passion for fostering creativity, building confidence, and offering dancers of all levels a space to grow as individuals and performers. Recently, Roc Dance expanded into a new studio space in the heart of Webster called The Loft, offering a spacious, versatile environment great for growth, community events, and exciting opportunities for students. The grand opening in October 2024 featured the studio’s “Discover Dance” days for new students and introduced the latest addition to its program—homeschool dance classes, designed to offer children of different educational backgrounds the opportunity to embrace the art of dance.

Roc Dance brings fun to the fundamentals while maintaining a structured and disciplined approach to dance education. All faculty members are collegetrained in dance, with many bringing professional performance experience to the classroom. Roc

Dance features a carefully designed curriculum, uniforms that foster a sense of belonging, and a wellrounded approach to performance. Students shine in recitals, competitions, and local performances, but they also have unique opportunities, such as performing at Disney and attending national events in Boston.

Beyond technical excellence, Charlotte loves watching students thrive as individuals. For her, the most rewarding part of running Roc Dance is witnessing the joy on a child’s face when they master a new step, build lifelong friendships that last well beyond the studio, and when former students return as teachers.
