Last evening, our neighbor had eleven cars lined up along his driveway. We watched as unmasked guests walked into his home. Our Governor has put COVID-19 restrictions in place. It seems that this neighbor and his guests have other ideas. I wonder what the majority of people would think of this behavior.

At the grocery store this morning, 5/14, thank you so much for stopping to point me in the right direction whilst I was pushing a stroller with one hand, the wheels turned the wrong way, and it began to move towards the

“enter” side. I had stopped and was attempting to convince the thing to go in the right direction, when you so kindly assumed that I could not read the “exit” sign or see the big orange road cones. Whatever would I do without people like you to take time out of their busy day to point their judgmental finger in the same direction as the arrow on the “exit” sign that’s right in front of my face so that I know which way to go? You can now rest easy knowing you saved lives today. Thank you, social distance warrior. You’re a hero.

In my town, nearly everyone is taking COVID-19 precautions, and I’m fine with people wearing masks everywhere they go.

However, there is a social network platform, and the people on there are in tinfoil hat mode. At one point, someone illegally took an illegal picture of some minors hanging at a park. They

I want to thank the angel of a lady who was able to catch my dog on Boughton Rd in Bloomfield on Sunday morning June 21st. My car wouldn’t start, and I was trying to get my dog into a friend’s car as it was hot out. He got scared and bolted from the Boughton Park parking lot and started running down the street. I ran after him, but he was paying no attention to me.

She stopped and was able to grab him. What an angel she was! I can’t thank you enough!

The bride wore a white wetsuit and the groom wore black, saying their “I do’s” while circled by different types of sharks and eels. Both were experienced divers but had to broadcast their vows to the wedding officiant, family and friends, since (unsurprisingly) none of them possessed equal nerve to enter the tank.

Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip.

Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous.

Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

Find Outdoor Fun with Genesee County Parks, Recreation & Forestry

s our region continues reopening, several people grow increasingly eager to participate in activities once again.

Many have at once become accustomed to working, eating, and even shopping at home while spending recreational time outdoors.

Genesee County Parks, Recreation & Forestry is working to provide fun, family-friendly spaces and activities this season.

“Walking, biking, jogging, and enjoying nature like our ponds never really stopped,” said Paul Osborn, director of Genesee County Parks, Recreation & Forestry. “Our parks have remained open during this time but have not been available for driving through.”

“We just recently received our staffing, so now we are once again open to drive through from 9AM-9PM,” explained Osborn. “Our playgrounds have also reopened at this point, and our facilities are frequently sanitized. Up to 25 people are now allowed in groups in parks, and we encourage guests to adhere to social distancing.” Genesee County Parks are free and will remain open to the public until the first weekend in October.

“One of our biggest assets is the Ellicott Trail,” Osborn stated. “It is 4.6 miles long one way and starts on Seven Springs Road.” This multiuse, 10-foot-wide, non-motorized trail passes by Blondies Sip n’ Dip Ice Cream, through DeWitt Park and Elmwood Cemetery to Pearl Street Road in Batavia. “This trail truly highlights recreation in Genesee County,” he added. Home of the Ellicott Trail, the DeWitt Recreation Area also features a 38-acre lake stocked with brown trout, picnic shelters, a playground, boat launches, a fishing dock, and a 1/4 mile walking track.

Also worth exploring, the Genesee County Forest, located in East Bethany, contains 431 acres of forest, meadow, wetland habitats, 12 miles of trails and features hiking, biking, geocaching, horseback riding, wildlife watching, playgrounds, horseshoe pits, volleyball nets and more. Its Interpretive Nature Center, to reopen in Phase IV, offers local wildlife displays, hands-on activities, and a live observation honeybee hive.

At-Home Allergy Shots?

The Risk Is Too High ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: After giving myself allergy shots at home for years, my allergy doctor’s group has decided that it’s too dangerous for patients to do this anymore. The allergy practice will no longer send a vial unless you can prove the shot will be given in a medical facility. Even if you are a nurse or doctor yourself, you still must prove that the shot will be given in a medical facility! Of course, there is a charge per shot if you drive across town to have the allergy practice’s nurse give it.

Not long after getting this notice, I read an article about a local child who has improved an insulin injection device. After the alteration, several more doses could be extracted. The article also mentioned children being able to give themselves insulin shots at school!

This is such an obvious money grab. How can it be safe for children to give themselves insulin at school but too dangerous for adults to give themselves shots at home?

Do you know any reason for this change of policy for giving shots other than docs who can’t get more patients, so they bleed the ones they have dry? -- P.S. ANSWER: Insulin therapy is very different from allergy shots.

Insulin is routinely given at home, work and school, and is very safe.

The difference with an allergy shot is that you are getting a substance you are known to be allergic to. Comparatively, there is a significant risk of an allergic reaction. Only 3% to 5% of people getting allergy immunotherapy will have a systemic reaction, and only 1 out of 5,000 shots or so will require epinephrine. That might not sound like a high risk, but for a busy allergy clinic, that means about one person per month. The epinephrine is used to both treat and prevent life-threatening reactions.

The guidelines from allergy experts clearly state that injections must be given under qualified medical supervision. Your doctor’s group was not following the standard of care before. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you mentioned that your smartwatch warns you every hour to stand up. Is this a good idea? What else is it good for? -- D.K. ANSWER: The evidence that standing periodically has health benefits is fair. One study showed that when people did lightintensity activity (such as walking) for two minutes a day instead of sitting, premature death rates were reduced. Prolonged sitting is associated with heart disease, diabetes and overall cancer rates.

The evidence isn’t definitive, but it’s suggestive enough that I do get up and walk around (when I can) when my watch reminds me that I’ve been sitting for a long time.

It’s not 100% clear that exercise trackers like pedometers and more advanced devices, such as a smartwatch, increase activity for everyone. It clearly does motivate me. I think it’s a personal decision that needs to be made based on whether you need more exercise (nearly everyone would benefit) and whether it would be motivating. I will say that, for many people, the social aspects of it do get some people to exercise more than they would have otherwise. Some devices let you see your friends’ activity and engage in friendly competition and support. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT (NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys.

COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs.

In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage.

“A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.”

Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis.

If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive.

Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in.

Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19.

More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia; • 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome.

By Sam Mazzotta DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In a private Facebook group I belong to, someone is offering a pet for adoption, saying it belonged to their recently deceased mother-in-law. They want a $650 fee for “rehoming” the pet, because they say it has AKC registration. Is this a legitimate fee? It seems awfully steep. -- James in Burlington, Vermont DEAR JAMES: Rehoming fees are a fact of life for private pet placements, but $650 to simply adopt a pet is unreasonably steep.

That isn’t to say that rehoming fees are a bad thing. A reasonable rehoming fee can prevent a pet from being adopted by people with bad intentions, who can’t financially care for a pet, or who are impulsively adopting a cute little dog that they might abandon at the first hiccup in behavior.

The flip side is someone abusing the rehoming fee for personal profit. That person may claim that the fee offsets their costs of caring for the pet, but when the rehoming fee far outstrips the cost of adopting from a shelter, it’s time to proceed with caution.

Find out what the local shelter charges to adopt a pet and ask online what average rehoming fees are for your area. If you’re interested in the dog, contact the offerer and find out as many details as possible about its breed, temperament, health and the environment it lives in. Do not send any money beforehand. You need to meet both them and the dog in person, and no money should change hands until both sides agree (in writing, ideally) to the rehoming.

Further, if they are truly concerned for the dog’s welfare, they will have questions for you -- maybe even an application -- to make sure you are genuinely adopting the dog and will be a good owner.

STAY SAFE ON WET ROADWAYS ALL YEAR LONG Weather plays a role in driver safety regardless of what time of year it may be. From wind and rain to snow and ice, travelers routinely navigate roads when conditions are far from ideal.

Wet roadways are a common occurrence. The automotive resource AAA advises that wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. Many crashes occur when drivers do not recognize the need to change their driving habits in wet conditions. Mastering driving techniques on slick, water-logged roads can help motorists avoid accidents and injuries.

See and be seen: Before they even get behind the wheel, drivers should inspect all headlights and taillights to ensure they are in working order.

Replace any bulbs that have burned out, and clean cloudy lens covers.

Drivers need to see roadways clearly, so they should make sure their windshields are free of streaks, debris and water. Periodically replacing windshield wiper blades can ensure they’re working optimally when drivers need them most.

Slow down and give other motorists space: Slowing down and stopping can take extra time when roads are wet. AAA notes that, with as little as 1/12inch of water on the road, tires have to displace a gallon of water a second to keep the rubber in contact with the street. Driving slowly can make it much easier for vehicles to stop. Plus, driving slowly enables drivers to see obstacles or pedestrians more easily, especially in heavy rains.

Exercise caution with puddles and running water: It may be difficult to gauge the depth and ferocity of water flowing in a roadway. Quickly moving water can cause a vehicle to hydroplane or even move a large vehicle. A deep puddle also can affect drivers’ ability to steer or cause vehicles to stall. Take another route rather than risk driving through large puddles or areas where water is flowing on roadways.

Skidding: Do not slam on the brakes if a car begins to skid or hydroplane, advise experts. Instead, ease up slowly from the accelerator and then steer the vehicle into the skid or straight. Then accelerate smoothly once more. Sudden, jerky movements when a car begins to skid can exacerbate the situation.

Maintain tires: Tire treads should be checked at the start of a new season to ensure the rubber will be able to grip the road. Rotate tires according to the manufacturer’s requirements, or every 5,000 miles. Properly inflated tires will improve traction as well.

Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.

In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side.

Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.

For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible.

In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished.

Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity.

Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once.

Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity.

Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed.

Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted

by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week.

Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too.

Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks.

Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand.

Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.
