Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar.

Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight.

The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy.

• Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session.

• Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to

anticipate stopping along the way.

• Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before.

Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well.

Nighttime Visions and Vivid Dreams --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an extremely healthy 76-year-old woman. Almost every night, I am startled awake by visions of people standing over my bed. It’s usually once, but can happen up to three times in a night. It’s often after being asleep for an hour and a half.

They’re not dreams. Something wakes me up, and that is when I see a man or a couple or a child standing around my bed or attempting to jump onto the bed. Though it lasts only seconds, my heart hammers and I jump out of bed to chase “them” away, and even checking the door locks. Then I sort of come around and pretty much laugh at myself. As it’s quite frightening, I believe I shout out, and it takes me a bit to calm back down.

I take NO prescription drugs nor sleep-inducing medicine. Why am I experiencing this? What actually wakes me up to see these visions? Otherwise, I sleep very well. I would greatly appreciate your insight or any advice as to who I might talk with about it. -- Anon.

ANSWER: I hesitate to tell you, but what I am concerned about most is a condition called dementia with Lewy bodies. This is not Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, the earliest symptoms are usually visual hallucinations. If you read this account (https://bit.ly/2Sk1Jzo), I think you may find some characteristics that sound familiar.

What makes me doubt this diagnosis is that you report no confusion or memory problems. Although some people may have the hallucinations well before any thinking problems come up, they are in a minority. Wobbliness may go along with Lewy body dementia.

Parkinson’s disease may develop visual hallucinations, but that is usually late in the course of the disease.

This information can be shocking or depressing, but it is still important information for you to have. There is treatment for LBD. More importantly, there are medications that can make it MUCH worse.

I would recommend you visit a neurologist and specifically find someone with expertise in dementia, as that is who is unlikely to miss this diagnosis. Unfortunately, it is not always recognized early.

Have you heard of vivid dreams associated with this medicine? I am having difficulty with it. -- L.G. ANSWER: Vivid dreams are not typically associated with hydrochlorothiazide. HCTZ does not cross the blood-brain barrier, so it wouldn’t be expected to have this effect. However, HCTZ often is given along with other medications that can have this effect, especially beta blockers, such as propranolol. If you are taking it as part of a combination drug, I would look at the other drug.

Some medications are particularly well known for causing vivid dreams, and it is wise to tell people that before prescribing them.

The HIV drug efavirenz can cause such vivid, and sometimes unpleasant, dreams that some people can’t take it. Statins, steroids, antihistamines and SSRI anti-depression drugs all are known to cause dream problems in some people. When I was given the antimalarial drug mefloquine, I had no idea that it was known to cause vivid dreams until I woke up the morning after taking it wondering what had happened. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene.

While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.

Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday.

Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity.

Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away.

Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing.

Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

Safety first before mixing medications

Staying Informed Has your Meals on Wheels expanded their service? In a number of areas, the program has taken on more volunteers or widened the area they cover, having received grants and other funding, giving more seniors the opportunity to have meals delivered. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, those meals might be covered, if you meet the qualifications.

Some areas are establishing meal delivery from restaurants for seniors who shouldn't go out. If you have a town council, they will know about any kind of changes in your area. Some towns have an online list of restaurants with details about whether they're closed or are providing service (curbside, limited inside seating or delivery). Other areas have free senior pickup meals for those who can drive to the location. Call your local senior center or check their website for more information.

If you're not certain what programs are available in your area to help you, go online to 211.org and put your ZIP code in the search box. That will take you to the 211 for your state. You can either call them or click on their online directory of information. They list food (delivery and pantry), substance use, utility assistance, transportation and much more. Each agency lists the programs it offers, such as personal support services and family caregiver.

Stay healthy.

The American Heart Association notes that mixing drugs can produce unexpected side effects. This can make it dangerous for people already on prescription medications to use over-the-counter drugs for issues like headache or seasonal allergies. Understanding the potential interactions between their prescriptions and common prescription and over-the-counter medications can help people stay safe. · Antihistamines: Antihistamines are widely used to alleviate symptoms of the common cold or seasonal allergies, such as runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing. The AHA notes that, when taken along with blood pressure medication, antihistamines can contribute to an accelerated heart rate and cause blood pressure to spike.

The AHA also cautions people taking sedatives, tranquilizers or prescriptions to treat high blood pressure or depression to consult their physicians before taking antihistamines. · Bronchodilators: Bronchodilators relax and open the airways in the lungs and are used to treat various lung conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. These drugs make it easier to breathe and are available via prescriptions. But patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, and/or diabetes should discuss the potential interactions between bronchodilators and other medications they may be taking with their physicians. · Cordarone: According to Drugs.com, Cordarone is used to treat potentially deadly abnormal heartbeats. Cordarone can cause severe problems that affect the lungs, thyroid or liver, and can be dangerous when combined with other drugs. For example, the AHA notes that patients who take more than 20 milligrams of Zocor, a drug used to lower “bad” cholesterol and potentially to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack and other conditions, while also taking Cordarone are at risk of developing rhabdomyolysis.

Rhabdomyolysis is a condition marked by the breakdown of muscle tissue that can lead to kidney failure or death. The AHA also says that Cordarone can inhibit or reduce the effects of the blood thinner Coumadin. · Nicotine replacement products: People taking prescriptions for depression or asthma should consult their physicians before taking any nicotine replacement products. The Federal Drug Administration notes that doctors may want to change dosages of patients’ current medications before recommending they take any nicotine replacement products. The FDA also advises people to speak with their physicians before trying these products if they have diabetes, heart disease, asthma or stomach ulcers; have had a recent heart attack; have high blood pressure but do not take any medication for it; or have a history of irregular heartbeat.

Drug interactions can complicate treatment of various conditions.

People currently on medication are urged to speak with their physicians before taking any new medicines, including over-the-counter drugs. TF207100

Local Food Pantry Receives Donations from Byron Bergen Faculty Association

T

he North Bergen Community Food Pantry, a partner of Foodlink, opened its doors in the summer of 2019.

Founder and Coordinator Reverend David Fish knew that there was community need, but could not have anticipated the unusual circumstances brought on by COVID-19. Since food pantries nationwide are receiving an increase in requests from families, the Byron Bergen Faculty Association (BBFA) decided to collect monetary donations from faculty and staff to support the local community.

On April 30, 2020 Rev. Fish received a check for $3,100 from the BBFA. “There are no words to express how appreciative I am for this generous donation,” said Rev. Fish.

“The donated funds will be used to purchase food for the pantry, to feed our community, and find ways to reach out to those living in poverty. It is truly a donation that stays in the neighborhood.”

“The BBFA and its members have a long standing tradition of helping people in the community when it is needed most,” said Byron Bergen Social Studies Teacher and BBFA President Ken Gropp. “In this unprecedented situation, the BBFA members and the District’s administrative team saw an opportunity to provide assistance where it was most needed in our community. All of us care deeply about our students and their families. This was a great opportunity for all of us to continue to show it.”

Fish has seen many new faces as well as familiar faces coming more often.

“I want people to feel safe and know that there is no judgment,” said Rev. Fish.

“This is exactly what we are here for. It is important to feed people.”

The idea was originally brought to the BBFA by Jr./Sr. High School Music Teacher Lawrence Tallman. “When they announced the need for donations back in March, I decided to share it with the faculty in hopes that we may receive some canned goods and nonperishables,” said Tallman. I knew we had a generous faculty, but this generosity really overwhelmed and humbled me. It makes me so proud to be a part of this district!”

In less than a year, the North Bergen Community Food Pantry grew from serving fewer than 20 people to hundreds.

With social distancing in place, gathering a large group together whether at home or in a public setting for a birthday party isn’t necessarily an option. Have no fear though! While your kids may not be able to hang out with their friends in person, they can still get together to do some crafts, tell some jokes, or bring some levity into staying at home.

Host a virtual karaoke party or girls night-in featuring at-home manicures for teens while they cue up their favorite music and celebrate their birthdays at home but still with friends. Live-streaming a movie together (with the right extensions) can make up for that birthday trip to the theater that got sidelined—plus you can never go wrong with popcorn!

Adults shouldn’t feel left out—hosting a game night or even a couple of hours of conversation through voice call can ease that sense of isolation, and sometimes there’s nothing better than getting the game together to reprise their own rendition of Happy Birthday.

and tries to meet everyone’s needs. Staff call families, so each one is contacted three times a week to offer support, attend online meetings, and provide learning for their students. The school hands out lunches and is working diligently on new ways to keep the students engaged.

This is my first year working at the school as an aide, and I have a child in middle school, so I have firsthand experience with what is happening. The middle school teacher has online meetings with the students on Mondays and Fridays. She posts lessons online and follows up with the students and parents when the work isn’t returned. She reviews the work, writes comments and requires the work to be fixed and returned.

This goes out to all the management and staff at Trader Joe’s in Pittsford. They are doing an exceptional job in keeping their customers safe. They have a wonderful system of keeping customers separated outside, checking that all are wearing masks, keeping few customers in the store at one time, giving the customer a completely sanitized cart (not just a quick wipe), wiping down the credit card machine regularly, not allowing cloth bags for groceries and providing free paper bags instead, and just generally being helpful to the customers and keeping a positive with the yard? It’s their property!

They might not have as much free time on their hands. If you’re worried about the property value, maybe you should offer to help them with their yard. Thank you.

The recommendations also said get in and out quickly as possible in the stores, so two people splitting up and getting the groceries gets the job done faster. That’s less time in the grocery store. I have seen big box store parking lots crammed with cars, and I have seen families shopping in there. Leave your family at home. Bring just one or two from the family, too. I don’t see many people doing the 6-foot social distancing rule, and some are without masks.

While some of us follow the social distancing, stay at home, wear the mask orders, others do not. What a disregard for the wellbeing of others! Shame, shame, shame. We know of someone who is sick with a cough, and yet they have company come over their house.

The guest was even hugged!

They did not wear masks. They also have been driving around and gone out and not for essential things. So, they put everyone at risk. Do they have a death wish? Are they that ignorant, or possibly just defiant?

In a world where some, who call themselves neighbors, would not even cut or trim a blade of grass if it were on their neighbor’s lawn, it is refreshing to have a neighbor who knows the value of treating then you could be possibly infected with whatever it is that they have.

Meanwhile, for those who do care to follow the guidelines and recommendations, thank you, and may you stay well.

In a world turned topsy turvy by the virus, I find it delightful someone having pink rocks. and if they want to leave some at the park, go for it. For the person complaining, lighten up; it is not hurting anything. I have a pink car, and people like looking at it. Most people like it and take pictures of it and think it is nice. Just because you don’t enjoy the pink rocks doesn’t mean you have to take the smile off someone else’s face.

Life has become too serious in the light of things, and spreading some happiness is much appreciated.

You can just ignore them and scroll on by in your thoughts, like you would on Facebook, for something you don’t like there.

I went to the drive thru of Five Star in Brockport. I was nervous about how it would turn out since I haven’t done any banking at a drive thru in years. I had deposits to make and asked for a deposit slip, so I could fill it out, and was pleasantly surprised when Jorayn (hope I spelled it correctly) told me that she could just do it for me. Not only did she do that for me, but she also printed up additional deposit slips for me as well. She also told me that when I use them all up to tell them at the bank, and they will print some more up. It is such a pleasure to bank with Five Star.

In response to the post entitled “Protect Liberty:” How about do the right thing and follow the guidelines and protect others from what could be a death-dealing illness? That is why we are in the situation we are in: people who feel like you do. It’s called common decency, and it’s the ethical and moral thing to do. Like an official said, how difficult can it be to wear a mask? Really! Have a good day, and make sure to stay well. Will you give up your ventilator should you need one? Food for thought.

Regarding those who defiantly disobey social distancing, wearing of masks or protest in order to go back to work too soon during this coronavirus pandemic: I feel authorities should collect their social security numbers, and they shouldn’t be allowed to go to the hospital and go on ventilators because they are bringing harm to others.

Fleas Spark Cat Spat DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I visited my friend’s house with my cat back in March. Now, my friend says my cat, “Chuckles,” gave her cat fleas. She wants me to pay for flea treatment. I say my cat doesn’t have fleas and I don’t owe her a thing.

What do you say? -- Sierra in Modesto, California DEAR SIERRA: This is one of those spats that sometimes end up being resolved on a TV court show. While entertaining for the audience, it can be heartbreaking for both parties and can end the friendship.

There is, of course, no proof that will convince your friend that Chuckles didn’t have fleas back in March. She may not even accept the fact that it’s possible to pick up fleas or flea eggs while walking outdoors and bring them into the house, where they can hatch and then hop on board a pet’s fur. And now that flea and tick season is in full swing, what may have started out as a few fleas is now a full-blown infestation.

I’m not a relationship therapist, but if you value the friendship, offer to compromise somehow.

You might pay for half the cost of the flea treatment -- topical treatments can be pricey. You could purchase flea prevention products and offer to help apply them in and around her home -- with the promise that you’ll apply them to your home, too, as a preventative measure.

In the meantime, doublecheck that Chuckles is flea-free.

Comb through his hair and look for dark speckles or visible fleas near his skin. If there are certain spots that he scratches frequently, pay special attention. Even the most diligent cat mamas may deal with fleas at the height of the season.
