Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

Kendall Seniors Participate in Interview Day with Employers Sixty-six Kendall seniors recently had the opportunity to talk to professionals in the fields they are interested in as part of Senior Interview Day at Kendall Junior/Senior High School. This event directly ties to the district’s mission of preparing students for life outside of school. Tradesmen, media professionals, health care workers and law enforcement officials were some of the professionals in attendance. The students filled out a questionnaire to identify what careers they are interested in pursuing and then Kendall administration did their best to match each student with a professional in that field. Beginning in September, students began working with their Government and ELA teachers to prepare for their interviews by creating resumes, cover letters and thank you notes. Counselors worked with the students on how to dress for an interview and use appropriate body language and speech in the interview. Senior Interview Day simulated what it would be like for the students to apply for a job in their field. Students submitted their resumes to the professionals prior to the interview. Some professionals had part-time jobs or internship opportunities available that they screened students for. The seniors had a chance to ask for career advice, have their questions about college or vocational training answered, and find out how to prepare for their intended career through opportunities such as part-time jobs, internships or volunteer work. After the interview, the professionals completed a rubric for each student. Teachers shared the feedback from the rubric with students to help them improve their performance in the future. The seniors completed the experience by writing their thank you notes to the professional right after the interview. “The kids really look forward to this day,” said Principal Carol D’Agostino. She said the program has been operating at Kendall for at least 11 years. Twenty-eight employers participated in the event this year, many of whom are Kendall alumni, too. Dr.

During an interview Hannah Bushnell, a 2006 alumnus of Kendall and a psychiatry resident in Elmira, participated in Senior Interview Day as a professional for the first time. She had previously participated as a student when she was interested in becoming an actress. Bushnell is still working on her degree and hopes to be able to work in a hospital with autistic children when she is finished with her education. When she was at Kendall, she participated in the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES program, New Visions, to explore a career in the medical field and that helped spark her interest in pursuing a career in psychiatry. She also said her English classes helped her with writing reports in the medical field. Bushnell took physics and chemistry classes while at Kendall. She said that those classes were challenging for her, but they helped her because she had to prove herself, complete projects and learn to study. She enjoyed participating in Senior Interview Day. “I was impressed that the students were prepared and able to answer my questions,” Bushnell said. “They had a real vision of their futures. I was also able to give them feedback on the experience, which is terrific, because how often do you actually receive that in an interview situation?”

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.

Scrapbooks can help document your year Many interesting and special events take place during the course of a typical year. While the trend is to share photos and anecdotes via social media, these memories tend to be forgotten soon after they are posted. Rather than relegate birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and other such yearly events to the black hole of cyberspace, crafty men, women and children may want to display them in more prominent ways. Scrapbooking is a popular hobby that can help people document various events over the course of the year. But scrapbooking can be much more than that as well. Scrapbooks can serve as valuable resources that speak to the way life once was. Such traditions are not new. Books highlighting family memorabilia, such as recipes, poems, letters, and illustrations, were popular in England as early as the 15th century. Even school yearbooks are a type of scrapbook, highlighting students and events in a single convenient book. The reasons for scrapbooking are the same today as they once were. Scrapbooks preserve memories, record family stories and pass down information through generations. Scrapbooks can even be customized in any manner their creators desire. For those who have resolved to devote more time to documenting happy times and special events in the year ahead, scrapbooking is a great way to do just that. Here’s how to make the process creative and successful. • Devote a box to “scraps.” At the beginning of the year, set aside a medium-sized box, such as a shoebox, that can store various items you want to include in your scrapbook. These may include ticket stubs, receipts, brochures from trips, or any other items you deem worth saving.

Showcase the special memories of the year ahead by starting a scrapbook.

• Make time to scrapbook. Set aside a few days each month to go through collected items and organize them so you have an idea of what will be included on your pages. Every event may not make the final cut, but that’s up to you. • Indulge in some craft-store shopping. Not everyone has the time to design each scrapbook page from scratch. Fortunately, there are numerous pre-designed templates or slip-in pages that require little work on the part of scrapbookers. • Use your own handwriting. Handwritten sentiments can make the scrapbook even more meaningful. • Don’t overload with photos. Let one or two photos on a page best convey the emotions and stories. Create balance with white space, text and other accents. • Categorize your photos. Disorganized photos can make scrapbook creation more challenging and ultimately frustrating. Organize your photos by month and rely on cloud-based photo storage systems to keep them safe. Then, when you need them, you can print only those images you want to include in your book. • Have fun with the process. You have the entire year to create a beautiful scrapbook. Take your time and experiment with different ideas.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Healthy Bodies Don’t Need Supplements DEAR DR. ROACH: After viewing an infomercial that praised the benefits of probiotics, I would like to know what you think. Probiotics have been prescribed when one is taking antibiotics to replenish the good bacteria that is lost. When taking no medication, I found that when I took one capsule (30 billion live cultures per capsule/10 probiotic strains) on a daily basis, I would get gas and diarrhea; therefore, I stopped taking them. I thought that this was the exact opposite reaction that should have occurred. Please write about the pros and cons and the reasons/necessity for taking probiotics on a daily basis. -- D.A.M. ANSWER: Probiotics are microorganisms, usually bacteria or yeast, that have beneficial properties. There is at least some evidence to support the use of probiotics for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), colon inflammation from radiation, irritable bowel syndrome and other diseases of the GI tract. However, with a few exceptions, there is very little evidence that taking anything (prescription or supplement) is of benefit to people who are healthy with no symptoms. Probiotics haven’t been shown to benefit healthy people. Any treatment can have side effects. While there may be some benefits, such as preventing antibioticsassociated diarrhea, I hesitate before recommending any treatment to a healthy, asymptomatic person. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Does high blood pressure cause irregular or abnormal heart rhythms? -- P.K.S. ANSWER: Not usually. In some people with very longstanding high blood pressure, the heart can become dilated -- blown up like a balloon to much more than its normal size. When the heart, particularly the atria (the top chambers), becomes dilated like that, it makes atrial fibrillation more likely. High blood pressure is very common. Irregular heartbeats are universal -- we all have some every day. It is human nature to associate one problem with another, since they are both related to the heart. However, it’s more likely that the everyday irregularities you may have had without noticing take on new significance with a diagnosis of high blood pressure. That being said, since it is possible they are related, it’s certainly worth an EKG next time you see your internist or cardiologist to make sure you don’t have a dangerous heart rhythm. Sometimes doctors order 24-hour (or longer) EKGs for use at home, which can be correlated with any symptoms of heart irregularities. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart-rhythm disturbances in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6. Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have lower-back ache and have been seeing a chiropractor, which helps a little. Would yoga help? -- A. ANSWER: Yoga does help many people with back pain, but it’s important to find an instructor with experience with beginners and in using yoga specifically for back pain. Similarly, tai chi and Pilates exercises have been shown to be useful treatments for back pain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Secret s t o k eeping an organized shed A w ell-organized shed can save homeow ners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of w ork gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just w hat needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. M ake a pile of anything that w ill be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of w hat you have so you know w hether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another. Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap w ood to use to make your ow n storage shelves or a w ork bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items. In order to remember w here items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the w all so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of w hich tools are missing and w hich ones need to be purchased. Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they w ill alw ays be easily accessible. You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed w all to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. M etal funnels can hold tw ine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe. M ake sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items. Roll in the law nmow er, w heelbarrow and any other cumbersome items. Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.

Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home. • A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

“Happy Holiday” (sometimes performed as “Happy Holidays”) is a popular song composed by Irving Berlin during 1941 and published the following year ... LONG before all this political correctness started! It was introduced by Bing Crosby in the 1942 film “Holiday Inn.” Commonly regarded as a Christmas song, it was performed on New Year’s Eve in the film and expressed a wish for the listener to enjoy “happy holidays” throughout the entire year. The song helped to popularize the phrase “Happy holidays” as a common greeting during the Christmas and holiday season in the United States. I used to look forward to my husband belting out “Happy Holidays” (the only 2 words he would sing) in his deep voice every year until he passed in 2012. BTW, I also say Merry Christmas!

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2016

I live in a very nice neighborhood, many professionals, families, and retirees. Unfortunately, on trash day when there are high winds forecast (there are four different trash companies servicing the neighborhood, each with a different pick-up day) many residents just place the recyclables on the curb the night before. Due to the prevailing winds, the blowing trash that does not get caught on neighbors’ fences ends up at the entrance of the neighborhood, creating a ‘royal’ mess. Please, if you must put the trash out early, secure it; put the heavy glass on top or find another solution. Please be environmentally responsible and stop making the neighborhood the town dump.

To the coyote hunters who use dogs and drive white trucks: I know your dogs can’t read a posted sign. But that does not give you the right to disobey the signs unless you don’t care. I know it is cheaper to pay fines then it is to own your own land. If I catch you on my land I will have you arrested.

Career opportunities in health and wellness Health and wellness has grown increasingly popular over the last several decades as more and more people have adopted lifestyles designed to improve their immediate and long-term health. Not surprisingly, career opportunities in healthcare and health and wellness are on the rise, and the following are a handful of careers men and women interested in health and wellness may want to consider. • Health educator: The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that between 2012 and 2022, the job outlook, which projects the percent change in employment, for health educators and community workers was 21 percent, nearly twice the average growth rate for all occupations during the same period. Health educators perform a host of tasks, including teaching and promoting various wellness practices. Health educators may also develop strategies and campaigns to promote wellness. • Massage therapist: Massage therapists help people recover from injury and relieve stress, but they also might be used to improve circulation and increase relaxation, both of which can contribute to their patients’ long-term health. The BLS projects the job outlook for massage therapists between 2012 and 2022 to be 23 percent, indicating that there figures to be an array of opportunities available

to men and women interested in pursuing massage therapy. Such people should know that massage therapists typically must complete a substantial amount of postsecondary education before they can earn their license or certification. • Nutritionist: Men and women with an interest in food and nutrition may want to consider a career as a nutritionist. Dietitians and nutritionists often fall under the same career umbrella, and the BLS reports the job outlook for both careers between 2012 and 2022 is 21 percent. Dietitians and nutritionists often serve as advisors to people or organizations looking to embrace or encourage healthy lifestyles, and both may work in hospitals, nursing homes, cafeterias, and clinics. • Occupational therapists: Occupational therapists employ everyday activities to treat patients dealing with injury, disability or illness. Occupational therapists may help their patients relearn how to feed and dress themselves, while some might work exclusively with stroke patients who have lost their ability to perform certain tasks as a result of their strokes. The BLS reports the job outlook for occupational therapists, who earned a median annual wage of roughly $75,000, between 2012 and 2022 is 29 percent. HW156234
