Are dogs really happy in freezng weather?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: While walking along the local riverway this frosty weekend, I noticed at least three people whose dogs were under-equipped for the cold. One dog wore an insulated vest but no booties; the other two dogs wore no cold protection at all. Why do so many owners ignore their dogs’ comfort and safety this way? -- Harold in New Hampshire DEAR HAROLD: Unfortunately, not every dog owner knows that it’s up to them to protect their pets from cold-weather hazards.

Most dogs won’t ask for a sweater vest, and I’ve yet to meet one that didn’t hate booties. I know quite a few dogs that just won’t tolerate booties.

Many owners do know their dogs’ limits in the cold, however.

They check the temperature before going outside and survey the sidewalk or trail they’re on for hazards like ice chunks, salt or glazing. They limit the time spent outdoors so their dog’s core temperature doesn’t drop. They monitor their dogs to make sure they’re not shivering or in pain, and that their paws aren’t getting frostbitten. And they carefully wipe and check their dogs’ paws as soon as they get back indoors.

How do you, an observer, make sure that an owner is following these guidelines? Confronting owners is not advisable. You may be able to strike up a casual conversation on the path, and ask how their dog tolerates the cold weather. But don’t preach at them. In my experience, owners who take the time to walk their dogs on a leash in freezing weather do care about their health and keep an eye on them in the cold.

That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

How to Take Precautions When a Family Member Has Mono ---

Colder Weather: How To Manage Your Blood Pressure & Health High blood pressure means that the force of blood pushing through your body is too strong. That pressure puts a strain on your arteries, which carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. In colder weather, blood vessels constrict more than normal, which raises blood pressure.

• Practice healthy habits: Being physically active, eating healthy & limiting alcohol can be critical to managing your high blood pressure year round, especially during fall and winter. Try to get up and move for at least 30 minutes each day. As the weather changes, modify your exercise routine to include raking leaves, shoveling snow or walking indoors at a mall.

• Measure and monitor your blood pressure regularly. Blood pressure monitors are inexpensive and can be purchased at pharmacies and other stores. Many supermarkets and pharmacies have machines that take and record your blood pressure.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter was exposed to infectious mononucleosis (“mono”) at college, and she is coming to spend a week at home. What precautions do we need to take to make sure that the rest of the family remains safe? How long does the virus stay active on surfaces?

Also, can she get her flu and COVID shots? -- D.G. ANSWER: Mono is classically caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but very similar symptoms can be caused by other agents, viruses and even a parasite as well. The virus is transmitted through saliva.

The latency period (the time from exposure until the time of symptoms) is longer than you might expect; four to six weeks is typical. Not everybody develops symptoms. Younger children seldom develop symptoms at all when infected, yet they still receive immunity. Unfortunately, they may shed infectious virus particles for months, years or even decades.

It is likely that the adults in your family are immune, since 90% of adults have had an EBV infection before. EBV is not a particularly infectious disease, so transmission to family members is uncommon. Still, you should avoid sharing anything that saliva touches, like food, cups or toothbrushes. You don’t need to take special precautions with surfaces.

WHAT THE NUTRIENTS FOUND IN MANY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES DO FOR YOUR BODY Dietary fiber: Dietary fiber is found in various fruits and vegetables. The Cleveland Clinic notes that berries like raspberries and blackberries contain significant amounts of dietary fiber. Pears, artichoke hearts and Brussels sprouts are packed with fiber as well. A highfiber diet helps stabilize bowel movements and maintain bowel health, and WebMD notes that studies have found a link between high-fiber diets and a lower risk for colorectal cancer. Studies also have linked fiber-rich foods with heart-friendly outcomes like reduced inflammation and lower cholesterol.

The following recipe for “Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Explore the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) includes some Moroccan flavors that give this easy-toprepare recipe a truly unique taste.

Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread Makes 2 cups 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped Salt 1 cup cooked garbanzo beans, drained 4 teaspoons chopped cilantro plus 1 teaspoon for garnish 2 tablespoons chopped red onion 21/2 teaspoons ground cumin 11/2 teaspoons ground coriander seeds 2 tablespoons lemon juice 4 teaspoons olive oil 2 teaspoons chile flakes 2 teaspoons Moroccan Spice Blend (see below) Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 batch Yogurt Flatbread (see below)

In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots with 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons salt. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, until the carrots are tender. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the carrots to drain and cool in a colander.

Incessant Dog Barking Our neighbor’s three dogs bark incessantly every time they are outside. The dogs are outside many times during the day, sometimes before 6:30am and even as late as 9:30pm or 10:00pm. We have complained to the neighbors more than once, but they claim they cannot hear the dogs barking. They say they have tried to curb the barking, but don’t want to curb the barking completely because then the dogs would not warn them if there was danger. Other neighbors have also complained and some have mentioned that they may move. We work from home much of the time and it is really hard to concentrate when the dogs are barking incessantly. It is impossible to have a quiet afternoon on our deck or walk our dog in the back yard. We have considered putting up a fence, but that would be quite expensive and likely would not stop the barking. Short of filing a formal complaint with law enforcement, what are we to do?

Parking lot repairs Someone needs to do something but who is left to go to when management won’t fix things? A relative who has lived in a elderly apartment complex for years now with huge potholes, one way in and out, and 3/4 of it is horrendous. The sidewalks have been roped off for over a year, leaving occupants with wheelchairs or mobility carts in a dangerous position, unable to navigate it. Nothing has been fixed, other than stones tossed into the holes, which helped for just a few months. I encouraged them to call the housing authority or withhold rent until repairs are made; it is NOT safe. I can only imagine the damage being done to their vehicles. Anyone have other advice? Our seniors deserve better!

A SWEET TREAT FOR GET-TOGETHERS Yields 64 Crust 21/2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 cups butter or margarine, melted Filling 3 cups pecan halves, divided 2 cups packed brown sugar 3 eggs 4 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt Powdered sugar, optional Preheat oven to 350 F. For crust, combine flour, powdered sugar and baking soda in a batter bowl. Add butter; mix until crumbly. Lightly press crumb mixture over bottom of stoneware bar pan; roll lightly. Bake 15 minutes; remove from oven to a cooling rack.

Meanwhile for filling, reserve 1 cup of the pecans for garnish; chop remaining pecans.

Combine chopped pecans, brown sugar, eggs, butter, vanilla, and salt; mix well. Pour filling over warm crust, spreading to edges of pan. Arrange remaining pecan halves over filling. Bake 17 to 19 minutes, or until filling is set in center. Remove from oven; cool completely.

Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian Church Rallies to Restore Organ

I

n the heart of Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian Church lies a historic treasure, gasping for air as the soulful notes that resonated through this sacred space since 1907 faded away.

Devoted individuals like Greg McAllister, Rob Willhoft, and Alden Snell united to revive the dying heartbeat of their precious pipe organ.

Under the leadership of Pastor Brandt Hammack, the congregation decided to band together to bring this rare treasure back to life.

Arrangements were made, ideas were composed, and the miracle of music lives on.

Alden Snell, a key player in this resurrection symphony, first encountered the Bergen church organ during his junior year at Roberts Wesleyan College in 1999. His lifelong love of music began at the tender age of three when he lined up dominoes like a keyboard, pretending to play the organ. He earned his doctorate from the Eastman School of Music.

After moving to Delaware with his wife, Christin, they came back to Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian Church. However, the organ was not behaving. Alden had a vision and presented it to Session members and the congregation, proposing the choice between letting the organ die a slow death or bringing it back to life. They agreed to save this treasure and embarked on a journey of restoration.

Crafted at Charles Viner & Son in Buffalo, New York, the organ was originally a theater organ. Charles Viner, Sr., born in England, moved to Westfield, Massachusetts with his family just after the Civil War. A relative of Eunice Ely brought the organ to the Bergen church, and Eunice’s father hand-pumped the bellows to make the organ play.

The organ was moved from Buffalo to Bergen in 1907 – the church’s 100th-anniversary. Renovations took place in the 1960s and again in the late 1980s, with dedicated church members including Fred Ely volunteering to physically redo the leathers and felts that held the keys together.

Recently, the rallying cry for the organ’s restoration again echoed through the pews, leading to a pledge campaign and various fundraisers.

The mechanical marvel, powered only by electricity for the blower, Alden playing organ required an overhaul. The pipes needed cleaning, keyboards were warped, and the air system begged for rejuvenation. Renovation involved organ pipe voicing, woodworkers, and designers crafting a custom wind system.

Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian hosts a rededication of the historic pipe organ as well as a concert series to offer the community a nostalgic musical experience with performances by Eastman School of Music students, as well as Alden himself, Roberts Wesleyan Brass Quintet, Jaclyn Breeze (flute), and George Collichio (guitar).

Alden will play pieces performed in 1907, as well as pieces from 1982 and 1990.

Jaclyn Breeze, who started piano at 4 years old and was taught by her mom, will play in the Bergen concert series with a hymn sing at the end. Her previous concert series focused on flute music of the last 100 years, and this Spring she is doing another series with pieces that involve a solo flute, imitating other things such as trains, fish, and butterflies.

George Collichio’s music interest was sparked at 6 years old by his guitar playing parents. Collichio founded Collichio School of Music in Rochester, and is now a National Recording Artist, Performer, Music Educator, and private guitar instructor.

As the sounds of music reverberate through the revitalized pipes, Bergen Evangelical Cal Parsons and Fred Ely Presbyterian Church stands as a in front of organ testament to the power of unity, passion, and the enduring resonance of history and melody. The rededication is not just a celebration of a restored organ; it’s a celebration of a community that refused to let its musical legacy fade away. The notes played on this organ tell a story of perseverance, dedication, and the unwavering belief that, with a united voice, even the faintest melody can be brought back to life.
