The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect.

However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.

While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

Henrietta’s Colony Lane Circle of Lights Continues to Delight and Celebrate Community

In a quiet neighborhood off Calkins Rd in Henrietta, a festive spectacle has been lighting winter nights for thirty years. The Colony Lane Circle of Lights, a dazzling display of Christmas and Hanukkah decorations, continues to be a beloved community tradition, drawing visitors from across the region with its creativity, warmth, and ever-evolving technology. Each year brings new delights, and this season promises even more sparkle and whimsy.

For about 30 years, the six homes on this circle have been participating in the holiday tradition.

What began as simple decorations gradually transformed into what neighbors fondly call a “bit of a friendly neighborly contest,” a true “light circus.” Nancy Flynn, who has lived in the neighborhood off and on for 60 years, has been the social media guru, spreading word far and wide. She fondly recalls when one hesitant homeowner joined in, helping create the unified circle of brilliance that has defined the season ever since.

Every home now illuminates its property surrounding the circle with its five majestic maple trees greeting visitors. New technology continues to shape the spectacle, ensuring visitors “see something to delight” each time they arrive. “There’s always something new,” Nancy says, and responded that while the talking tree is not a feature this year, she hints at technology that’s fresh this year.

Some favorites remain unchanged. Gary Smith’s carousel is still a showstopper, and Nancy jokes, “If that were not put out, I think we would have protests.” Her husband, Rob, affectionately known as Mr. Christmas, is the force behind many of the computerized, high-tech displays, while Nancy refers to herself as the self-proclaimed Grinch who occasionally suggests scaling back. But year after year, the neighbors’ shared enthusiasm only grows.

MAPLES ON THE CIRCLE WELCOME VISITORS CREDIT WENDY SULLIVAN

The heart of the Circle of Lights is not just the decorations but the community spirit they inspire. Nancy says their simple motivation is “To bring peace, love, and joy.”

For her, Rob, and their neighbors, the joy on visitors’ faces, especially adults who return with their own children to reminisce about stopping by as kids, is the greatest reward.

The circle’s goodwill shines even brighter through its support of RHAFT, the Rush-Henrietta Area Food Terminal. A donation bin sits on the circle 24/7, collecting non-perishables for families facing food insecurity. Nancy explains that people have long tried to offer money to help with electric bills, but neighbors declined. Instead, the community channels that generosity toward RHAFT, whose donations help feed families and provide rides for seniors’ medical appointments.

Nancy acknowledges the many local teens who volunteer hours toward community service in a meaningful way, adding, “The RH Girl Scouts have a long history of volunteering at our Circle and we appreciate them so much!”

A cherished highlight each season is the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Santa (played by Dave and Michelle Calogero). Joined by the Elf, along with Woody, Buzz, Mickey, Minnie, Elmo, and others, played by local volunteers, they greet visitors on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. through December 20, weather permitting. Volunteers help park cars, pose for photos, and bring a touch of magic to each family’s visit. Afterward, they gather at the Flynn home for a hot dinner, where they “debate the best Christmas movies ever and just spend time together because the BEST part of the holidays is spending time with family and friends,” as Nancy says.

The Colony Lane Circle lights shine nightly from 5 to 10 p.m. through New Year’s Eve, and Nancy says they’ll remain on through February “to help fight the winter blues.” Nancy extends heartfelt thanks to those who decorate their homes, don festive character costumes, assist with visitors, and patiently accommodate the traffic that brings joy to so many.

A true labor of love, the Colony Lane Circle of Lights continues to be a beacon of hope, connection, and celebration. As Nancy says, “We wish you peace, love, and joy!” a message that resonates across social media and in the hearts of the countless families for whom this tradition has become a cherished part of Christmas.

Barb Cavalieri Cookie Recipe: 4 Cups Rice Krispies Cereal; 1 cup light corn syrup; 1 cup granulated sugar; 1 1/4 cups creamy peanut butter; 5 reg.sized Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups; 1/2 cup chocolate chips. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside and place your Rice Krispies in a large mixing bowl. 2. In a large microwave safe bowl, combine your corn syrup, sugar, and peanut butter and cook on high for 2-3 inutes, stirring every 30 seonds until your mixture is evenly combined. 3. Pour your peanut butter mixture over your Rice Krispies and mix. 4. Mix in your chocolate chips. 5. After a couple minutes, mix in your crushed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, to avoid them fully melting. 6. Spoon your treats out with an ice cream scoop and onto your lined baking pan, let cool, then using a fork, slightly flatten them (so they look more like a thick cookie instead of a ball). 7.

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS Tradition is a huge of the holiday season. Whether it’s decorating the family Christmas tree or baking cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve, families can make this time of year even more special by creating some of their favorie kid-friendly traditions that are sure to produce lots of fun and even more lasting memories.

• Advent calendars: The precise origins of Advent calendars are unknown, but historians believe the tradition was started by German Lutherans in the nineteenth century. More than a century later, roughly 50 million Advent calendars are sold across the globe each year, according to Marketplace.org.

Advent is a nearly monthlong period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25. Each day during Advent, children open a flap, window or door and find a small gift, poem, candy, or another item that adds to the excitement of the season.

• Matching pajamas: Though the tradition of wearing matching holiday pajamas may not have the same lengthy history as Advent calendars, it’s nonetheless a very fun custom for families. Parents can decide how frequently their families dress up in matching pajamas at bedtime during the holiday season, but doing so on Christmas Eve is a popular way to make a fun day even more special. Another idea is to host weekly holiday movie nights during the season, which presents a perfect opportunity to don matching PJs. • Holiday lights tour: Holiday lighting displays have come a long way in recent decades. Whereas it might once have been popular to string a few strands of lights around the exterior of a house, many holiday celebrants now beckon their inner Clark Griswold and turn their properties into areas with enough illumination to land a small plane. Holiday inflatables for the yard add to the awe of such displays. Kids tend to be especially fond of these types of displays, so parents can make a point to pick a night each holiday season to go on a tour of their neighborhoods and towns to see this year’s offerings.

• Christmas dance party: Sweets are another staple of the holiday season, and what better way for kids to burn off some of that extra sugar than to dance it away to a holiday music playlist curated by Mom and Dad? Cue up some holiday classics but let kids dance to a few of their own favorites as well.

CREATING NEW HOLIDAY TRADITIONS for your family

Identify what you value Values establish the foundation for holiday traditions.

Maybe you aspire to give back to your community?

Perhaps the goal is to spend more quality time with family? Once you’ve identified the values driving your motivation to start a new holiday tradition, you can then establish one that aligns with those values.

For example, if you aspire to give back, then a day of service at a nearby soup kitchen can become a holiday tradition.

Expand on an existing tradition New traditions do not have to be entirely unique; they could expand on things that families already do.

If family baking sessions are an existing tradition, perhaps the efforts can be expanded to include more family members? Extra items can be packaged up and shared with elderly neighbors who may no longer have a lot of family visiting or can’t bake on their own.

Holidays are full of traditions, from turkey dinners to mistletoe kisses, but there’s always room to start something new. Mix the old with the new, tweak what works for your family, and create traditions that make the season feel truly yours.

Reflect on childhood traditions Perhaps there is something adults did during their own childhoods that can be incorporated into modern traditions? An adult who has fond memories of playing a game in between courses of the holiday dinner can engage in that same game to pass it on to another generation.

Get inspired Although scouring social media can create feelings of inequality or even competition as everyone posts their holiday activities, such searching also can provide inspiration for innovative traditions. If something a friend is doing looks like it can be fun and rewarding, families can borrow the tradition and make it their own.

Communicate with others Engage the entire family in discussions about traditions they may want to include in holiday celebrations as well as what ones they may not enjoy.

For example, traditions that foster over-consumption or create unnecessary stress can be eliminated and replaced with customs that make everyone feel better.

Involve others Part of the magic of the holidays is the chance to connect with others. Expand holiday traditions to include more people. If a home is not large enough to handle a crowd, think about renting a room at a VFW center or firehouse, where a greater number of people can get together to create wreaths or even watch holiday movies. The more, the merrier this time of year.

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup all purpose flour ½ tsp baking soda ¼ cup cocoa powder ⅓ cup unsalted butter ½ cup white sugar 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla extract ½ cup semi sweet chocolate chips 1 cup chocolate frosting* 12 Werther’s soft caramels 1 Tbsp heavy cream 1 Tbsp Heath English Toffee bits *Any chocolate frosting will work, Duncan Hines Creamy Milk Chocolate frosting suggested DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a stand mixer or a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream together butter and sugar.

3. Add egg and vanilla and continue to mix on low speed.

4. Add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients slowly and combine until a soft dough forms.

5. Fold in the chocolate chips, scraping dough from the sides of the bowl.

6. Drop 8 to 10 large scoops of dough onto the prepared baking sheet. Leave at least 2 inches between each cookie dough ball.

7. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes or until the top is set. Place on a wire rack to allow the cookies to cool.

8. Once cool, cover each cookie with frosting. For a clean look, you can use a 1A decorating tip or frost by cutting a small hole in the corner of a Ziploc-style bag.

9. To make the caramel topping, combine caramels and heavy cream in a small bowl.

10. Melt the caramels in the microwave in 15 second intervals, stirring in between until a smooth caramel sauce is created.

11. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the frosted cookies.

12. Sprinkle toffee bits on top and allow the caramel drizzle to cool and set.

Enjoy!

This recipe makes 8-10 cookies. Can be stored in a freezer bag or airtight container at room temperature for a week or in the freezer for up to three months.

Do we need vitamin supplements?

Many of us have made our list of resolutions for the New Year, and some of those resolutions involve health and fitness. We’ve decided to get healthy and believe that the answers lie in exercise, diet, social interaction for mental health -- and vitamin supplements.

Of those, the one that puts up red flags is the vitamin supplements.

If we don’t know what we’re doing, however, we can cause problems because what we take might be unsafe.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) has explored the topic of supplements for seniors (www.nia.nih.gov/health/vitamins-andsupplements/dietary-supplements-older-adults) and the site is full of caveats and warnings.

To be considered: -- If you’re hunting for supplement information on the internet or by watching TV ads, be wary about who is behind it. Do they have a reason (such as profit) for promoting a certain supplement?

-- Remember that more is not necessarily better. Too much “more” of any supplement might be harmful to you.

Check the NIH dietary supplement database at dsld.od.nih.gov.

They have over 200,000 supplements listed, and you can search by product, brand or ingredient.

Before you start taking supplements, talk to your doctor. You might be advised to make some adjustments to your diet instead, or they might know of a reason in your medical profile that indicates a certain supplement could cause problems for you.

The NIH also recommends looking at the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, a free publication online at www. dietaryguidelines.gov/sites/default/files/2021-03/Dietary_ Guidelines_for_Americans-2020-2025.pdf. There is a whole section for older adults.

Good Samaritans A few weeks ago, after shopping at my local grocery store in LeRoy, I was attempting to put my cart in the cart return. I tripped and fell and had difficulty getting up. Three fabulous people came to my aid and helped me up. Please know how grateful I am for your compassionate help.

We see them everywhere from pizza shops, bakeries, bottle returns, and many more businesses. I just don’t see the honesty behind this. It makes the consumer feel intimidated. I think it’s rude to have these. Tips are for services provided to the consumer. They are not for supporting businesses. Many people have complained about this.

Parents, Please!

For the safety of your children do not let them stand in the back of store carts. If the cart should get bumped or they “trip” on items in the cart they could easily fall out. Have them in the front of the cart in the seat or sitting in the back. Store employees should be told to politely ask parents to not have children standing in the carts.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year at age 76, I was diagnosed with sinus

node dysfunction after several episodes of what I’d call being “spaced out” (for lack of a better term). I couldn’t explain these instances to myself, much less anyone else lest they think I was crazy, until I had one where I passed out. This scared me, and I told my husband, who immediately made a doctor’s appointment.

The wise physician assistant sent me to a cardiologist who had me wear a heart monitor for two weeks. During this time, I had another episode that lasted for seven seconds, according to the very alarmed cardiologist. I was immediately scheduled for pacemaker surgery.

Could you please discuss sinus node dysfunction and enlighten me as to what caused it? -- G.W.T.

A. STICK

ANSWER: The sinus of your heart has nothing to do with your nose as you might guess; it’s a structure in the right atrium where blood flows into the heart from the venae cavae. It contains a structure called the “sinus node” or “sinoatrial node” that serves as the natural pacemaker for the heart.

If the SA node makes an electrical impulse, but it is poorly conducted, this results in an SA block. The sinus node may be too slow (sinus bradycardia), or it may fail to make an impulse for a period of time or even permanently (sinus pauses and sinus arrest). All of these are included in the umbrella term of “sinus node dysfunction” (which used to be called “sick sinus syndrome” since it’s accompanied by periods of a too-fast heart rate).

When the sinus node fails to provide an impulse, other pacemakers in the heart will usually provide an “escape” beat, which prevents the symptom of being “spaced out.” Some people describe this as fatigue or lightheadedness. If there is no escape beat, then you will get a sinus pause as you did. When the sinus pause is very long, the person will often faint (which we term “syncope”).

One of my fellow residents got a call from the attending cardiologist who was reading the heart monitor of a patient on the inpatient service and had found a sinus pause that lasted for 17 seconds. (I can still recall the cardiologist saying, “Good god, man! Is this patient still alive?” to the utter horror of my fellow resident, who literally ran to the patient’s bedside. The patient was alive, fortunately.)

The placement of a permanent pacemaker is the definitive treatment for sinus node dysfunction, but not everyone needs this. It’s also important to look for exacerbating factors (especially medicines but also thyroid disease, blockages of the heart arteries, liver disease, and low oxygen, among others) that can affect the sinus node.

These factors can make the disease of the sinus node become symptomatic due to fibrosis of the area around the SA node and its accompanying conduction tissue.

Most of the time, no specific cause for sinus node dysfunction can be found, but systemic diseases like amyloidosis, sarcoidosis and hemochromatosis are rare causes of sinus node dysfunction. __________ Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes.

That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born.
