2019 MEG’s Gift Golf Tournament Donates $45,000 to NAMI Rochester to Increase Youth Mental Health Awareness N

AMI Rochester is thrilled to announce that the Board of MEG’s Gift selected their organization as the recipient of the proceeds of their annual golf tournament.

Rochester’s NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) chapter was founded in 1982 by a passionate group of mothers affectionately known as “the NAMI Mommies.” The moms all each had children who were about to age out of the mental health care which was available to them only until the beginning of young adulthood. These dedicated parents developed the nonprofit group for concerned parents around a kitchen table to consist of a board, 3 staff members and dozens of volunteers.

In November 2018, members of the NAMI Rochester team met at Boulder Coffee in Rochester’s South Wedge with members of the MEG’s Gift team for a check presentation. “We are honored to be chosen as the beneficiary of this year’s event, and so grateful for our relationship with Meg’s family and their team. This generous donation will allow NAMI Rochester to expand mental health and suicide prevention efforts with local youth through our Ending the Silence program”, said Kristina Mossgraber, Event Coordinator and Educator with NAMI Rochester.

Ending the Silence is a program offered in local schools at the middle or high school level teaching students about mental health & illness, warning signs, suicide prevention and how to get help. This is NAMI Rochester’s fastest growing signature program, having started in the 2015 — 2016 school year locally with just a few schools, and through the first half of this school year, over 10,000 students have been through the program in 37 schools. “We spend hours each day trying to coordinate people for this program because we receive so many requests,” adds Mossgraber.

The contribution from MEG’s Gift will directly support the materials and other resources required to sustain and grow this program.

Last year’s recipient of the golf tournament was the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which has chosen to bring Hakeem Rahim, a leading national speaker on mental health and suicide prevention, to Rochester for a multi-school speaking tour in early March. NAMI Rochester will be co-sponsoring this event with AFSP, which will include programs for students and families during his visit, and is grateful that this generous donation will allow for this partnership. AFSP and NAMI Rochester are committed to increasing awareness of mental health and suicide prevention in our community through their signature programs, support offerings and guest speakers.

Submitted by Kristina Mossgraber Expanded by Amanda Dudek “There is still a stigma around mental health concerns,” said Mossgraber. “A lot of the warning signs, especially with mood disorders, can feel embarrassing and shameful, but if we don’t talk about the warning signs, people won’t know how to get help.” Mossgraber explained that one exciting thing about NAMI Rochester’s programs is that they are teaching children, parents and other adults about mental health, warning signs and how to get help and support. “It’s so exciting to have a parent and teacher aspect to this program,” Mossgraber shared. “Kids cannot be expected to navigate this issue by themselves.”

“There are so many awesome things going on!” said Mossgraber. “We have a class called Family-to-Family which is a 12-week class including both the person with mental health conditions and those in their family network.

We have been offering this class for many, many years. It runs in semesters, a spring and a fall class, and each of these cap off at 25 participants. We always fill them and have a waiting list.” Mossgraber explains that two years ago NAMI Rochester held two classes at the same time. Both filled up and were successful, so NAMI hopes to consistently offer two classes at a time in the future, as well.

“We also have a 10-week session peer-to-peer class, and all of our programs are at no cost, meaning participants get all of our nationally developed education and support resources for free!”

Mossgraber explains that many people come to NAMI Rochester just trying to figure out their next steps, with or without a diagnosis. She explains that NAMI is there to support them, giving them advice and understanding. MEG’s Gift will go a long way in supporting NAMI Rochester’s endeavors.

The mission of MEG’s Gift is to positively impact mental health care in the Rochester community through financial support, education and advocacy, with a particular focus on youth. Stomach “Flu” Is Not Actually Flu ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: With the flu season coming on, would you please discuss the difference between what people call the “stomach flu” and what the flu really is? I have two friends who said they weren’t getting the flu shot anymore because despite having it, they got the flu. They each described several hours of throwing up, but feeling better the next day.

I suggested that they probably had a gastrointestinal episode and not influenza, which is a respiratory disease. They insisted that they had the flu, and they’d always learned that the stomach flu is influenza and the flu shot is meant to prevent it. Since then I’ve spoken to two others who believe the same thing. -- G.C. ANSWER: You are right that there is much confusion about what influenza is. Influenza typically begins with sudden onset of fever, headache, fatigue and severe body and muscle aches. Influenza occurs about two days after exposure. There also often are symptoms of cough, sore throat and nasal discharge, just as there are with the common cold, but the sudden onset, fever (commonly 100 to 104 degrees) and muscle aches help distinguish cold from flu.

Gastrointestinal symptoms -- such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea -- are less common in influenza, and these symptoms in absence of the major manifestations listed above makes the diagnosis of flu very unlikely. In late fall through early spring, some diarrheal illnesses (mostly viral) are common, but you are correct that these are NOT influenza.

The flu shot contains viral proteins, not live influenza, and it is incapable of causing the flu. Many people will have a sore arm and sometimes mild fever and body aches after a flu shot. This is just part of the body’s reaction, and it goes away by itself within 24 hours. There is a live influenza vaccine given by nasal spray, which also generally has mild side effects. This may be given to adults under 50.

The flu shot is not perfect: You still can get the flu after receiving the shot. However, the flu shot is effective at reducing the most serious cases of flu, such as influenza pneumonia, which can be life-threatening or fatal. ***

recently had my gallbladder removed. What are the effects of not having this organ? -- I.T. ANSWER: The gallbladder stores bile and release it when necessary after a meal. Bile is made by the liver and is needed for proper digestion, especially of fats. After gallbladder removal, usually because of gallstones, the liver takes over the job by storing bile in bile ducts, and releasing it at the right time, under the influence of hormones, such as cholecystokinin. After surgery, most people have no problems with digestion, as their body gets used to the new status quo after a few weeks.

Rarely, people who have had their gallbladder removed can develop postcholecystectomy syndrome, which manifests as upper abdominal pain. There are several possible causes. Discovering it requires expert evaluation, usually by the surgeon, and it often involves CT scans and a special kind of MRI (MRCP) to evaluate the biliary tract. Retained stones in the bile ducts, leakage of bile and strictures (narrowings) in the bile ducts are the most common causes of PCS. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather.

Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement.

RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of life.

Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town.

With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conducted by law enforcement officials, whereas taxi drivers are subjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests.

While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides.

Four Ways To Remain Mentally Sharp In Retirement

\(NAPS)—Many retirees share a fear of gradually losing their ability to think as clearly as they used to or remember simple information such as other people’s names. And while everyone has the occasional “senior moment,” medical research indicates that aging by itself is generally not a cause of cognitive decline.

“Studies have shown that you can help prevent cognitive decline and reduce the risk of dementia with some basic good health habits,” according to Harvard Medical School’s Healthbeat newsletter.

Here are four simple steps to keep your mind sharp at any age: 1. Exercise: It’s important to stay physically active. Simple routines such as taking exercise classes at your health club or taking walks in your neighborhood every day can do wonders for your mental health. Just get moving. “The cognitive benefits of exercise have been understood for so long,” notes the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College.

2. Serve: Research published by the American Psychological Association found that volunteering in later life “is associated with significant psychosocial, physical, cognitive and functional benefits for healthy older adults.” Science is now confirming what many have learned by experience: People often feel better after they have served others and enjoyed the time spent helping someone else.

3. Learn: Experts think that ongoing education and learning new things may help keep you mentally sharp simply by getting you in the habit of staying mentally active. Take a class from a senior center or community college, make it a habit to visit the library and pick up a new book each week. “Challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them,” according to Harvard Medical School.

4. Finances: A study published by The Journals of Gerontology found that “financial strain was a strong and robust predictor of worsening mental health” among older adults, including anxiety and depression symptoms. Another way to help keep yourself mentally healthy in retirement is to make sure you have ample cash on hand to help pay off unexpected health care bills or fund any renovations that might need to be made to your home. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy.

A life insurance policy is considered your personal property and—as such—you have the right to sell that policy anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy in a “life settlement” transaction, the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments—then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000.

Dog urine and feces can adversely affect the look and health of a lush green lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advices to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns.

In addition to urine damage, dogs can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident until spring, and get into areas like gardens where they wreak additional havoc.

Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees.

Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light.

Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight.

While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight.

Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive.

Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs.

Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.
