DID YOU KNOW?

Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

GRILLED CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATOES

(NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan,for that matter),throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill.

Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.

Grilled

Sweet Potatoes

Serves 3 or 4

1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges

1 ½ Tbsp olive oil

1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling

Heat a grill or grill pan to mediumhigh. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, oil and salt. Arrange sweet potatoes on the grill or grill pan and cook until lightly charred and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through. Sprinkle with more salt and serve.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP

Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips havechangedconsiderablysinceJackKerouacpennedhisseminalnovel

“On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for theride.Driversabouttoembarkonaroadtrip, whetherit’stheirfirstsuch venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds.Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

POST-WINTER

Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC

Dimensions: Both the renovation experts at This Old House and the real estate experts at UpNest indicate that at least half of a finished attic must be a minimum of seven feet high and seven feet wide and 70 square feet. Requirements may differ depending on where homeowners live, but that 7-7-70 guideline is generally the minimum requirement. An attic that fails to meet such requirements won’t necessarily be a lost cause, but it might be costly to make adjustments that ultimately align with local codes.

BUILD A BUDGET THAT WORKS FOR YOU

Determine your net income. The Bank of America notes that net income, also known as “take-home pay,” is the foundation of a budget. In the era of direct deposit, it can be easy for anyone to forget how much money they’re taking in each month. Salaried workers can determine their net income pretty quickly and easily, while workers who are paid by the hour and freelancers may need to do a little extra work and serve as their own bookkeepers as they try to calculate their net incomes.

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS

Take the foreground into consideration. When you find an inspiring landscape to photograph, skip the empty landscapes and think about zeroing in on something interesting in the foreground. This can be a particularly attractive flower in front of a vast field, or even a rusty watering can left out in a row of crops. Items in the foreground impart interest in the photo.

MAN seeking a FEMALE relationship.

I'm Dennis, a 73 year old man, on a heartfelt search for a lasting connection filled with trust, companionship, and love with a special woman. I hope to find a life partner and a best friend, someone with whom I can share the remainder of my years. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest, hand in hand with someone you truly care about.

If you're interested in embarking on this journey with me, please feel free to drop me a message to know about you at oceandeep452@gmail.com. I'm open to connecting with someone between the ages of 62 and 79.

DID YOU KNOW? The first International Special Olympics Summer Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 20, 1968. The games were the brainchild of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who first proposed the idea of nationwide sports contests for young people with intellectual disabilities in November of 1966. Kennedy Shriver had spent years advocating for young people with intellectual disabilities, even opening a summer camp for such youngsters at her home in suburban Washington, D.C. in June of 1962. More than 200 events were offered at the first Special Olympics, including water polo, the 100-yard swim, the 50-yard dash, the broad jump, and the high jump.

PAW’S CORNER

This little dog has a lot of

moxie

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a small mutt from the local shelter and named her “Moxie.” She’s adorable but really energetic. She’ll actually jump straight up in the air as high as my waist! She also tugs hard at the leash when we walk. How do I tame all of this energy? -- Janice F., Hyde Park, New York

DEAR JANICE: Congratulations on your new pet! Moxie sounds like a bundle of joy. But I can understand that all her energy can be tiring.

In addition to walks twice a day (or more, if you can swing it), give Moxie plenty of puppy toys to play with at home, and spend time with her on the floor just playing fetch and helping her work off more of that energy.

She may also respond very well to a consistent schedule of walks, feeding and bedtime (yes, bedtime). Build certain predictable routines around each of these events. When it’s time for a walk, call Moxie and have her sit while you put on her leash. During walks, keep the leash short and work on the “heel” command. But when in a safe, open area, give Moxie more room on the leash to explore. When it’s bedtime, create a routine that is the same every night -- one that is positive, with a little play time and a signal to settle down and rest (such as turning down the lights).

Now, if Moxie’s energetic behavior is morphing into something more serious, like destroying furniture or being aggressive toward other dogs or humans on walks, that’s a problem you’ll need to address as soon as possible. Talk to Moxie’s vet about ways to reduce her hyperactivity and anxiety (if those are the causes). If she isn’t responding to basic behavioral training, hire a trainer to help.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

* Bar soap is much more concentrated and eco-friendly than liquid body washes. ese days, they are just as moisturizing as any liquid soap. Look for ingredients like shea butter or the words “ultra-moisturizing” and “added emollients.”

Receiving a diploma is something to take seriously, even for those students who are somewhat older than their fellow graduates. In 2003, Gustava Bennett Burrus graduated from Richmond High School outside of San Fransisco, Calif., at the age of 97. Ruth Hayes Green graduated from the Adult High School of the Perth Amboy, New Jersey Adult Education Center in 2010 at age 98. In 2013, 106-year-old Fred Butler, a student at Beverly High School in Massachusetts, received his high school diploma. He broke the Guinness World Record for oldest graduate previously held by Allan Stewart of Australia, who received a Bachelor of Laws degree at age 91 from the University of New England, New South Wales, Australia.

VENT BRIGHTER

Grateful to Alert Driver

Excess Noise

Saturday, April 6th just before noon on 15A in Rush, a child ran into the road right in front of my vehicle. There was no other option than to slam on my brakes. The driver following me in a black SUV quickly veered into the other lane, avoiding striking my vehicle, which surely would have been catastrophic for the child as it would have propelled me forward and into the child’s path. I am extremely grateful for the driver’s alertness and defensive actions and wish to express a very sincere THANK YOU. From the Red Honda CRV

After attending a weekend celebration I have to ask: Why does the band or music have to be so loud? Even when sitting the furthest away you have to turn your ear within a foot to hear someone talk, that’s ridiculous! Then everyone around has to raise their volume. To come home with ringing in your ears and a sore throat ruins the fun.

Young People in Management

Eclipse brings “sunshine”

While some of us may have missed out on a clear view of the eclipse, warmth reigned even as the temperature dropped, as we shared and connected with others. So many people spent time with friends and family that traveled for the unique event. Many small towns hosted gatherings for community members to make memories with families, friends, and no-longer-strangers. Thank you to those who hosted events for such amazing, once-in-a-lifetime memories! Because – even though it may have been cloudy, the people around you made it feel warm and sunny!

I don’t think young people belong in management positions. There’s so many reasons for this. For one, they walk in without any experience and not truly prepared for what needs to be done. Everyone knows with age comes wisdom. They’re just not comprehending how to run a place properly, or listen to concerns and then sometimes they don’t really know what to do about it. Sometimes it’s just laziness. Some sit around and do nothing. Walk around, looking around, flirting. Please choose better or pay attention to what’s going on.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET FLOORS:

Simply vacuuming or sweeping the floors might not be enough to banish some of winter’s most uninvited guests. Dust has a way of settling into a home over the course of a typical winter, and it’s easy for a home’s inhabitants to track dirt and debris inside as well. After vacuuming or sweeping floors, go over them with a mop. Doing so can remove any lingering dust, dirt, debris, and allergens the vacuum or broom failed to pick up. Apply wood cleaner and polish to wood floors to make them look even cleaner.

Each mumbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Constant Aleve and Ibuprofen Consumption Can Cause Damage

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, age 70, had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his neck, for which he would take Aleve to relieve his discomfort when needed. Just before Christmas last year, his back began hurting so much that he went to his doctor, who said to get up and move more. (We have always exercised and remained active in life, but he did slow down due to his pain.)

My husband then added ibuprofen to the Aleve he was already using. His doctor said that the pain is due to osteoarthritis in his mid-back area. Apparently, there is nothing to do for it but take Extra Strength Tylenol at the recommended dose. Ibuprofen or Aleve isn’t recommended because it causes liver and kidney damage. So, we bought Tylenol, and he used this medication instead of his usual. But his pain only got worse.

So, this morning, he switched back to Aleve and ibuprofen. It is what helped before and is helping again now. In addition, he is using a drug-free Aleve Direct Therapy pad that uses waveform technology. He also uses Icy Hot pain relief cream and a heating pad. These reduce his pain, but his back continues to hurt since before the holidays.

Our question is, should he use Aleve and ibuprofen instead of the Tylenol that doesn’t seem to help? He has actually used Aleve for a very long time. He just had his blood tested, and the doctor said his liver and kidneys are good. Is there anything more we can do to relieve his osteoarthritic pain? It is hard to see my husband in so much discomfort when he was previously a very active, pain-free man. -- S.F.A.

ANSWER: Osteoarthritis in the neck is a common and painful condition, and there are not always good treatment options. In terms of medicine, anti-inflammatory medicines, like Aleve or ibuprofen (Advil and many other brands), can be very helpful for some people. However, taking both doesn’t improve pain relief. It does increase the risk of toxicity, so he should never take two anti-inflammatory medicines -- choose just one. Tylenol helps some people, but in my experience, most people do better with anti-inflammatories instead of Tylenol. Tylenol does have a smaller risk of side effects. In addition to liver and kidney problems, Aleve and similar medicines can cause stomach problems, ranging from mild upset to life-threatening ulcers; though, this is uncommon with over-thecounter doses. I often recommend a trial of Tylenol to see if it is as good as the anti-inflammatories. Since it’s not for your husband, he should tell his doctor this, and it seems reasonable for him to go back to taking Aleve alone. However, I can’t tell you to disregard his physician’s advice. Some people benefit from Tylenol on top of Aleve.

Beyond pain medicines, the Aleve Direct Therapy pad uses electricity to relieve pain without medicine. It’s fine to combine this therapy with medicines. Creams -- whether they are antiinflammatory, menthol and camphor, or topical anesthetics -provide some relief, but they tend to be better on the hands, wrists and knees than the neck. Though, they still may be worth trying in combination with medicines.

In more severe cases, injections can be used before considering surgery.

Lessons in Problem Solving and Perseverance:

4-H Honeoye Robotics Club Competes in Two FIRST Robotics Competitions

When you are looking to identify future innovators, look no further than our very own town of Honeoye. e Honeoye Robotics 4-H Club is a group of young people ages 13-19 who build robots for competition. is year, they competed with their robot in two FIRST robotics competitions.

Mike Shaughnessy leads the Honeoye team along with other engineering mentors Richard Langkamp, Eric Fiegl, and Keith Richardson, guiding youth in designing, building, and programming a functioning competition robot. rough the project, youth not only learned important science and engineering skills, but also persistence, problem solving, and teamwork.

A global organization, FIRST robotics stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. Each year, FIRST gives teams a different challenge. Teams must build robots to complete a given task within specifications FIRST presents. is year, the competition, entitled Crescendo, required robots to place “notes” in designated “speakers” around the course. To finish the match, robots must also climb onto a “stage.”

e Honeoye 4-H team goes by the name of SUITS, which stands for Students Utilizing Ingenuity, Technology, and Science. eir first competition for 2024 was held at RIT the weekend of March 16th. At this competition, the SUITS placed 31st out of 54 teams. e robot fought them all the way, and they had to frequently return to the pit to repair mechanical issues. Under the leadership of their mentors, the youth worked hard to keep their robot going throughout the competition and never gave up. Upon elimination from the RIT competition, the team returned to the shop to continue working on the robot for several hours.

eir second competition was at the NY Tech Valley Regional in Albany the weekend of March 23rd. Plagued with mechanical problems yet again, the team worked hard in the pits trying to improve the robot. ough they finished 49th out 52 teams, their hard work in the pits and the team’s determination and drive resulted in the SUITS’ last three matches being their best, a testament to hard work improving the performance.

e youth learned important engineering (and life!) concepts

for their persistence and problem solving through a difficult season, and a big thank you to their adult mentors for guiding them every step of the way. e following youth club members attended the competitions this year: Daniel Richardson, Chloe Brunk, Chelsie Odenbach, Zachary Struble, Lily Temple, Lucas Mastin, Hunter Manciocchi, Jason Zanche, Cassandra Zanche, and Nicholas Connor.

Odenbachsays,“ erearesomanyfunthingsaboutrobotics, but one of my favorites is that community at the competitions and the learning experience. Everyone at the competitions is very positive towards each other and they are willing to help teams they’re up against. At both competitions I went to this year, I learned a lot about why wiring neatly is important and the struggles of having a double-jointed arm. Also cheering at the competitions is very fun because you can be as loud as you want.”

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL

Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely.

Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.
