One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes.

These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated.

Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration.

Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass.

Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

HEALTHY AIR, HEALTHY HOME (NAPSI)—In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities, warns the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Since most people spend some 90 percent of their time indoors, the EPA adds, for many people, the risks to health may be great.

In addition, the EPA points out, the people who may be exposed to indoor air pollutants the most-the young, the elderly and the chronically ill-are often those most susceptible to its effects.

With cooler weather, many people spend more time inside homes with all the doors and windows shut, so it’s even more important to make sure indoor air quality is healthy.

One easy way to help keep your family “Breathing Clean” is to clear out your HVAC system. All homes with air ducts accumulate dust and dirt, which can be a particular problem in households with: • pets • allergies or asthma • smokers • water contamination • remodeling projects • young children • elderly people.

After all, your heating and cooling system is, essentially, the lungs of your home. The system takes air in and “breathes” air out. Through normal occupation, people generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust and chemicals. These are pulled into the HVAC system and recirculated five to seven times a day and can mean a buildup of contaminants in the ductwork.

What’s more, clean ducts can save you energy and money. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. I really agree with getting rid of plastic bags. What I don’t understand is why grocery stores do not train their employees on how to pack the reusable bags. On five separate trips to the store to do my shopping, I have had to ask the cashier to please keep my meat separate from my cleaning products. Is this not common sense? I have come home with my frozen foods on top of my sliced bread and ice cream with my bar soap. Also, why am I given such a hard time when I ask for a freezer bag for certain items? I spend a lot of money every week on food and firmly believe I keep my grocery store in business. Please train your employees to pack grocery bags!

a very active life, both physical and sexual. Like many men my age, I have an enlarged prostate that my doctor monitors during annual visits. It doesn’t impair my life, with the small exception of being annoying (waking up nightly to a weak or slow urinating stream), and it doesn’t bother me too much during the day, except once in a while when I have to urinate a little more than usual. Every now and then I’ll try an over-the-counter prostate supplement, but they never work. I will NOT go for a surgery because it’s not really necessary.

I just read about a new revolutionary treatment option called a prostatic lift device, which is supposed to “lift and remove the prostate tissue out of the way so it no longer blocks the urethra (the passageway that the urine flows through).” It says, “Tiny implants are placed to hold the tissue in place, like tiebacks on a window curtain, leaving an unobstructed pathway for urine to flow normally again.” They go on to say that treatment typically takes under an hour, preserves sexual function, doesn’t require cutting, heating or removal of tissue. Compared with other BPH surgeries, this system is supposed to have a strong safety profile with minimal side effects.

Have you ever heard of this? Do you think it’s safe? It sounds great.

However, the thought of tiny implants being placed inside of me and staying there scares me. -- V.A. ANSWER: The prostatic urethral lift procedure is yet another option for men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate. The procedure does involve the placement of small implants. The procedure is said to be easy to perform (easy for a urologist, that is), and improves quality of life and measures of urinary flow.

In a study of 206 men, none developed sexual troubles after the procedure. It has significant benefits over traditional surgery: Recovery is faster and has less risk of sexual side effects, but traditional surgery improved urinary flow and complete bladder drainage more than the urethral lift procedure. Also, 14% of men who had the lift procedure needed the traditional surgery within five years. The implants seem to be safe and do not affect the ability to do surgery if necessary.

I wouldn’t recommend this procedure nor a surgical procedure -- or even an alternative procedure like laser, microwave, plasma vaporization or water vapor ablation -- without a trial of prescription medication first. Most men do very well with an alpha blocker like tamsulosin (Flomax), a dihydrotestosterone blocker like dutasteride (Avodart), or a combination of the two. I’m not sure you have tried that.

Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Celebrating Irish Heritage for Over 40 Years!

n St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, almost everyone is a little more Irish, at least in spirit. Bringing some Irish luck to the Greater Rochester area is the popular, family-friendly Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This parade is one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in New York State, second only to the one in NYC. It is the single largest one-day event in the City of Rochester. The parade’s history is rich, and Tops’ relationship with it begins over Irish soda bread and friendship.

Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade President, Chris Shalvoy, shared with us the history of the parade. “Rochester’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is celebrating its 43rd year, but the parade has been going on for a lot longer,” he said. “We have traced the parade back to the 1850’s when many people were emigrating from Ireland due to famine and political and religious oppression, and the Irish were often shunned.”

Over time, however, the parade became a mainstream event.

“In Ireland, it is a day for religious observance. In the United States, the parade took on a much bigger role as Irish immigrants celebrated their newfound freedom to openly practice their Catholic faith and Irish traditions without fear,” Shalvoy explained. Today, the Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade often draws as many as 60,000 guests when the weather is inclement but has drawn over 120,000 when it’s fair.

Shamrock luck certainly must have been involved when Tops became the parade’s headline sponsor years ago. “Dave and Cindy Hook, both of whom work for Tops, moved back to the small community I grew up in and still live in today,” Shalvoy began. “My son mentioned the last name (Hook) of a new boy in his class, and I thought his father must be related to a family I knew growing up.”

Dave Hook did grow up with Shalvoy and even had Shalvoy’s mother as his English teacher. Shalvoy’s wife, Gayle, belonged to the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish Catholic organization, as its president, which she still is today. They raised funds selling Irish soda bread. When they lost their provider, the Hooks suggested that Tops could help. Tops agreed, and the organization sold this bread at the Rochester Irish Festival that year. At that time, Chris Shalvoy was on the festival’s board and on the parade’s board.

“Tops enjoyed the Rochester Irish Festival very much,” shared Shalvoy. “When our parade lost its primary sponsor, Tops graciously stepped in as its headline sponsor.”

Shalvoy described Tops as continuing to be a wonderful partner, explaining that working with them is a privilege.

“Tops is very particular when selecting partners,” he explained.

“The company is very family- oriented. They feel this parade is somewhere they can showcase their product without having to worry about being embarrassed.”

A representative from Tops has faithfully attended the parade’s monthly meetings, and Tops has provided parade advertising, food and beverages for the workers and “really gone all out,” according to Shavoy. “It is a wonderful partnership,” he added.

One of the parade’s most well-known precursors, the Irish Night Amerks game, is held the Friday night before the parade. The Amerks wear Irish-themed jerseys which are later auctioned off. Funds raised

by the event and auction benefit the St. Patrick’s Day Committee, supporting the privately funded parade.

“The Amerks are a tremendous sponsor of the parade, and their Irish Night hockey game is something many people look forward to,” said Shalvoy. “If we play an American team, we sing the Irish National Anthem in Gaelic. That means a lot to me.” This year, Don Stevens, the announcer for the Amerks, is the parade’s Sportsperson of the Year, as well.

Medal of Honor recipient and Batavia Veteran, David Bellavia, will be the parade’s Grand Marshal, and 96-year-old Veteran, Peter DuPre will be its Honorary Marshal. Other honorees include Marianne Tucker, Compeer, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Mike McKeon and Patrick Michael Murphy. Honorees in memoriam include Eamon McCormack, Helen Doherty, Bill Kehoe, Jo Carroll and Joe Dady.

The parade will feature over 3,000 marchers and 100 entries, including 15 marching bands and 7 Irish dance schools. The Celtic Family Faire will also be at the parade from 11am-4pm at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn on East Main Street and will offer such highlights as In Jest (comedy), a photo booth, games, Irish storytelling, c u p c a k e decorating and hot cocoa all for the price of a donation to Daystar Kids.

“The parade is like a Barnum and Bailey Circus that walks right down the street,” Shalvoy stated. “Smiling little kids all have shamrocks on their heads; it doesn’t matter who they are or where they’re from. For those 2-3 hours, the parade brings joy to them, and they get that escape.”

The Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 12:30pm. The parade will be televised live on Spectrum TV. For more information, visit www.rochesterparade.com.

Ask the agency how each caregiver is notified of a client’s daily condition, how that information is communicated to other assigned caregivers to ensure seamless care, and how families are notified, how often and when.
