As the mercury falls, the rubber used to make traditional tires can become hard and less pliable, compromising its ability to grip the road.

How ever, many snow tires are made w ith a specialized rubber that remains supple even in very cold temperatures, making it easier for the tire to hug the roadw ays even w hen those roads are in poor condition.

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an average of 11,500 snow-shovelingrelated injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006.

Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms and hands and cardiac-related injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow.

There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcattype devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines.

(NAPS)—You may have heard the terms—winter blues, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Pattern. No matter what you call it, with approximately 17.3 million adults in the U.S. experiencing seasonal depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, feeling gloomy this time of year isn’t uncommon—but it can be overcome.

* On Feb. 21, 1970, national security adviser Henry Kissinger begins secret peace talks with North Vietnamese representative Le Duc Tho at a villa outside Paris. The North Vietnamese were demanding an unconditional U.S. withdrawal on a fixed date.

The Problem - Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Pattern (formerly called SAD) can affect anyone of any age. While January and February are the typical peak months for the disorder, symptoms can persist through April, according to Mental Health America.

* On Feb. 20, 1998, American Tara Lipinski wins the gold medal in women’s figure skating at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, becoming the sport’s youngest gold medalist at age 15. * On Feb. 23, 1958, Formula One champion Juan Manuel Fangio of Argentina is kidnapped in Cuba by a group of Fidel Castro’s rebels. Fangio was taken from his Havana hotel the day before the Cuba Grand Prix and was released unharmed after the race ended.

Doctor’s Advice - When that feeling of sadness persists for several weeks, it’s time to take action, according to Dr. Desreen Dudley, a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Behavioral Health Provider of Therapeutic Services for Teladoc Health. “If someone has a few days of feeling low, that’s normal and typically nothing to worry about. It’s when the feeling lingers for weeks and people lose interest in daily activities and suffer persistent negative thoughts, that lend a stronger basis for Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Affective Pattern diagnosis,” she says.

What To Watch For - Other symptoms she warns about are: • Change in appetite • Change in sleep pattern • Decreased energy • Decreased concentration • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt • An inability to think, concentrate, or finish tasks at work or school • Thinking about suicide, self-harm, or death Dr. Dudley contends individuals already struggling with depressive disorders are susceptible to SAD patterns. For older Americans, a Vitamin D deficiency can exacerbate low moods. On the other end of the spectrum, she has worked with newly independent college students who find SAD a heavy burden and say their new responsibilities of classes, exams and jobs can compound their depression. For some, they may be sleeping in more and further limiting their exposure to sunlight.

What To Do - In addition to considering therapy, such as virtual care, which is available on your terms and from any location you choose, Dr. Dudley recommends: • Avoiding or cutting back on alcohol and other addictive substances • Eating healthfully—more lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and eliminating sugar • Daily exercise at least 30 minute a day (walking counts) • Yoga or meditation • Learning about and trying light therapy • Regularly surrounding yourself with those you enjoy being around.

When To Seek Help - According to a recent global study conducted by Ipsos MORI for Teladoc Health, individuals often recognize when they’re struggling, but even so, over a third of the respondents who have had one mental health episode admitted to not seeking professional help. The reason? For many, it’s often the difficulty in finding mental health care.

“Thankfully, virtual care is becoming increasingly available as a source of convenient mental health care,” Dr. Dudley says. “It eliminates the traditional obstacles of in-person visits and has opened up access for anyone with a busy schedule, individuals who may have difficulty getting out of the house and students who may fear the stigma of walking into the campus mental health clinic.”

Best Friends CEO Julie Castle says the investment in data was necessary to achieve the organization’s goal of bringing the whole country no-kill by 2025.

“Up until two years ago, we didn’t even know how many shelters existed,” she said. “How can you possibly save all the animals if you don’t even know how many need to be saved?

“With this data in hand, our goal to save every savable pet by 2025 is finally within reach,” Castle said.

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier

(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure.

The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted.

“It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.”

Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips.

Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.”

My friends tell me that all cancer treatments are toxic and kill people instead of curing them, and that I should tell my relative to look into other forms of treatment. What do you suggest I do? -- K.C. ANSWER: There are hundreds of different types of cancer, and they vary widely in their capacity to grow and damage the individual, and in their response to treatment. For decades, this has meant mostly surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, but now includes newer treatments, including immune therapy. While not all cancers are curable in everybody, every year brings sometimes incremental, sometimes dramatic improvements in life expectancy for individual cancers. Some cancers that were rapidly fatal even a few years ago are now curable in most cases. Getting the right diagnosis quickly and getting to an expert in treating that cancer are critical to having the best chance of a good outcome.

Treating some cancers remains difficult, and in many cases the treatments have significant side effects. Surgery scars may impair function, and chemotherapy can cause severe symptoms and may permanently affect body systems, as can radiation. It can be very hard on a family member observing these treatments, and if his or her loved one nevertheless succumbs eventually to the cancer, it is understandable to think the suffering the person went through was in vain.

So, while I understand where your friends may be coming from, their well-meaning advice, based on bad experiences possibly a long time ago, might cause your relative with cancer to delay the potentially lifesaving treatments that are available now. A study published in July 2018 showed that people who use alternative medical treatments for cancer are less likely to be cured and have a shorter life expectancy.

My advice is that you encourage your relative to find the most expert cancer treatment available. It’s up to your relative to accept the recommendations of the expert, but delaying the best available treatment in order to consider unproven therapies is likely to result in harm. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had the same problem forever: I don’t understand why buttermilk coffee creamer seems to get outdated faster than regular creamer. Does the butter in it have anything to do with this? -- C.H. ANSWER: Buttermilk doesn’t have butter in it. It was so named because it was originally made with what was left after separating butter from the unhomogenized cream that had been allowed to ferment with airborne bacteria, making it slightly acidic. Modern cultured buttermilk is made from pasteurized, homogenized milk, usually 1% to 2% fat, and inoculated with healthy bacteria, which makes lactic acid from the sugars in the milk. This acid makes buttermilk resistant to the unhealthy bacteria that causes spoilage.

It also causes a slight sour taste, which some people like and others don’t.

Commercial heavy cream, and coffee creamers made from heavy cream, have a very long shelf life largely because they are pasteurized at ultra-high temperatures, so they last even longer than buttermilk. The high fat content also retards bacteria growth.

Both buttermilk-based and cream-based creamers will stay good longer than their expiration date. Dan Ripley, Beloved Local Musician, Receives Life-Saving Kidney

I

n April 2019, Dan Ripley received the concerning news that he would require a kidney transplant in the immediate future.

Ripley had struggled with kidney health all his life. When he was quite young, he was struck by a car, and as a result, he lost part of his spleen. This impacted his immune system and wellness as the spleen supports several other organs and body systems. Then when he was twelve years old, Ripley was diagnosed with Berger’s Disease, a disease which damages the kidneys over time and can ultimately result in kidney failure.

Even so, Ripley did not experience many symptoms for most of his life. In fact, he only began noticing a few initial symptoms in his late 20s.

As time went on, however, Ripley’s kidneys slowly declined. A fighter, he became determined to do everything he could to improve his kidney health. Ripley did a great deal of research. He changed his diet significantly and put a lot of work and effort into maintaining his health.

Nevertheless, his numbers continued to decline.

The situation became desperate when Ripley suddenly became very sick. “He got a virus,” said Ripley’s niece, Ashleigh Lang. “All of a sudden, it became an infection in his lymph nodes, and his kidneys failed.”

Ripley was started on dialysis. “During this time, he had been posting on Facebook about his need for a kidney,” recalled Lang.

“The doctors were telling him the wait could be up to seven years before he could find a deceased donor.”

Meanwhile, the dialysis

was wearing on Ripley.

“It really affected him a lot and made him tired,” said Lang. “He was still working at the time, as well.”

Dan Ripley of Dan Ripley Live makes his living as a local musician, a “local legend of sorts,” singing at local bars, venues and each year at the Hemlock Fair. “He began dialysis last fall and was even going to dialysis before performing in the evenings,” shared Lang. “A number of people volunteered for testing, including many of our family members, but we weren’t coming up with any matches.”

Then, in mid-December, motocross lovers Laura and Dave Williams reached out to Ripley, a lifelong motocross enthusiast, and invited him over for dinner. At dinner, they told him that Laura had tested positive as a match to be his kidney donor! At that time, there was no guarantee as she was still in the final stages of testing, but still, it was exciting news!

“The testing is extensive,” explained Lang. “She had gone through some of the harder tests, but she hadn’t been approved yet. Her husband had also tested positive as a donor for my uncle, and Dave was prepared to go through with it if Laura couldn’t.”

Although Ripley knew the Williams, having raced together and always been friendly, he was still amazed. “He never expected this,” said Lang. “It was such a selfless thing she did.”

As Ripley continues his journey to recovery, his family, including Lang, are hosting a Spaghetti dinner to raise funds for his cost of living expenses during the several months he will be unable to work. The benefit dinner will take place on Saturday, March 7th from 4:00pm-9:00pm at the Lakeville Training Grounds. $20 will purchase dinner and a drink, and the event will include live music by Grammynominated artist, Mike Brown – Dan Ripley hopes to sing a song or two, as well – door prizes, a 50/50 and raffles which may include an autographed Kenny Chesney guitar which has been generously donated.

“At first, it was happening so fast, it blew us all away,” shared Lang. “Now, we have gained a greater appreciation for people like Laura. There are so many people who care about my Uncle Dan and his music. It is so inspiring for us to see how much people love him and how much the community has rallied already in support of him.”

Over the years, as the house emptied, we formed an alliance you and I syncing our gaits, comfortable in our routine.

We watched each other’s hair turn gray, more amused than alarmed, each night holding the inevitable at bay with our playtime antics: hide and go seek (you never did learn to check the front coat closet) and running the inside track in the living room-catch me if you can! --an amusing sight, I’m sure, for anyone passing by the picture window.

Immortal youngsters we, puppies at heart, until that Monday morning when you and my world suddenly collapsed.

At the vets, you lay quietly, obediently, still the gentleman you always were, chin resting heavily on white paws (four, like socks), a tired sphinx awaiting the quick needle prick-too quick!-me, caressing and crooning, tears flowing, your betrayer, Judas with a kiss.

the corner and pulled in, and he laughed as he put his handicap sticker on his windshield. I looked at him like, “Are you really going to do this?” If he had manners, he would have seen that I don’t have a handicap sticker to hang up. I have permanent handicap plates.

I am also a senior citizen but with manners, so I didn’t say anything. If they would have watched, they would have seen that I must use a cane or walker to get around or grab a cart if one is close by.

I have had two major back surgeries and 18 shots so far in my back. I was hurt by the lack of manners people have nowadays. I hope they had a good shopping day and can live with being meanmannered seniors.

Tailored to the Territory The program could be lifesaving throughout the country. African-American women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer younger, and more likely to get a type of breast cancer that grows quickly and is hard to treat. Louisiana—especially the southern part of the state—has a large African-American population.

Dr. Donna Williams, director of the Louisiana Cancer Prevention and Control Programs (LCP), says she was surprised to see the number of women under 50 in the area with breast cancer.

Many of these cancers were found through a program started by LCP and local partners. The program sponsors two mobile vans carrying equipment to give mammograms, the recommended screening test for breast cancer.

Still, diagnosis is just the beginning of the breast cancer journey.

Raising Awareness LCP searched for breast cancer resources for young women on the Gulf Coast, but found only a handful. Practically none of them talked about fertility, early menopause or discussing cancer with kids—problems most older women with breast cancer don’t face.

So, with a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), LCP started a series of workshops just for younger women with breast cancer. It held meetings all over southern Louisiana and set up a Facebook account.

LCP called the project “SurviveDAT” after the rallying cry of New Orleans Saints football fans: “WHO DAT!” Going Regional, Going Viral When LCP applied for another CDC grant for the successful program, it had a big choice: keep SurviveDAT live or go totally online. While the inperson workshops drew only about 20 people at a time, the Facebook page had gained more than 2,000 followers statewide. The decision was easy from there: It was time to go virtual.

All of Louisiana could be reached with the planned website. But why stop there? LCP also got in touch with cancer control programs in other states.

Right away, Mississippi and Alabama signed on, creating SurviveMISS and SurviveAL. The goal of the “Gulf States Network” was to reach 7,000 users online in the first year. It took only 90 days to exceed that.

Information Machine A single small team manages the websites. Each site has the same look and basic structure and facts. Individual states can add regional information such as meeting dates and support group contacts separately.

All the websites share resources such as expert advice, survivor videos and frequently asked questions. Many conferences and other live events are also recorded or streamed live online.

Looking to the Future Dr. Williams and her partners want the project to keep growing. Already, cancer control programs in Arkansas and Florida have expressed interest.

And there are more issues to discuss. Women often have concerns about fertility, a good reason to talk to a doctor before beginning cancer treatment. Many are interested in genetic counseling, or speaking with a professional before genetic testing about possible test results and what they could mean.

The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company.

The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue.

In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules.

The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills.

“My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.”

Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century.

Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success.

“Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. FINDING WORK AFTER 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work.

Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent.

Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce.

Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience.

But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs.

Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories.

Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather.

Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity.

Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates.

Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.
