Volunteering benefits people of all ages, but can be especially beneficial to children. Studies have indicated that teenagers who volunteer are less likely to become pregnant or use drugs. In addition, in a review of 60 studies on child engagement, Child Trends found that children who participate in civic engagement programs are likely to be more involved in school, to graduate from high school and to hold more positive civic attitudes than those who do not get involved in such programs.

Getting kids to volunteer as they progress through adolescence may not be so difficult. In its 2014 analysis of volunteering trends, Child Trends found that 39 percent of twelfth grade students volunteered at least once a month in 2014 compared to just 27 percent of eighth graders.

Older students might feel compelled to volunteer to improve their college admissions applications, but parents can take steps to get their younger children excited at the prospect of volunteering.

Set a positive example. Young children want to emulate their parents, so moms and dads who volunteer may find ready and willing partners in their children. Parents can inform their children when they volunteer and why they do so before bringing kids along to join them.

Don’t forget fun. Young children may be more likely to embrace volunteering if the activity is fun. Kids might not find it too fun to sit next to their parents while mom and dad balance a soup kitchen’s books, but a beach cleanup excursion or a trip to refurbish an inner city park may inspire kids to spend a lifetime giving back to their communities and helping the less fortunate.

Keep it simple. Kids may not enjoy volunteering activities that consume too much time or make them feel exhausted. As kids grow older, parents can encourage them to embrace more challenging activities and/or commit more time to volunteering. But keep things simple with especially young children or older children who have never before volunteered.

Try and try again. It might take some trial and error before parents find volunteering opportunities their children truly enjoy. When volunteering with children for the first time, be careful not to commit to more than one day. If children enjoy themselves, then parents can commit more time. If kids do not seem excited by an activity, parents won’t feel guilty or let the charity down by not returning.

Children can benefit greatly by volunteering, and parents can get their youngsters involved at an early age.

Elba Launches Own FFA Chapter with Dinner Fundraiser

tudents, teachers and parents alike are buzzing with excitement in Elba. The town north of Batavia is about to have its own Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter after having partnered with Oakfield-Alabama for the past three years. Now, students will have their own classes and a chapter with additional time and resources.

For years, neither Oakfield-Alabama Central School nor Elba Central School had an FFA. This is rather ironic as the town itself is fairly focused on agriculture. Finally, about three years ago, interested students, families and teachers got together within the two districts and formed an Oakfield-Alabama-Elba FFA chapter with agriculture classes held in Oakfield.

While a resurging interest in agriculture was encouraging, the logistics of bringing students from Elba to Oakfield for agriculture classes was anything but. “It was causing students to miss portions of other classes,” explained Laura Luft, Vice President of the Oakfield-Alabama Elba FFA Alumni Advisory Board supporting both the Oakfield-Alabama FFA chapter and the newly formed Elba FFA chapter. “So, our new Elba Superintendent, Mr. Dale, figured out a way to hire an agriculture teacher. Now, both districts can provide Agriculture classes in-house.”

The FFA provides children with meaningful career education and experience. “We are setting up programs where kids can job shadow,” explained Luft, mentioning that the Elba area has a great group of local business, farms and tractor dealerships. “The FFA offers many opportunities and experiences to help kids become job and career ready as they discover their interests.”

Elba FFA officers are excited to have a new FFA chapter!

Students who become FFA members have official dress outfits that include the blue with yellow-lettered coats. Recently, the officers of the Elba and Oakfield-Alabama FFAs completed a course on their duties at Cornell. FFA members can attend the state and national conventions, participate in public speaking competitions, job shadow and raise animals. “In Oakfield, the students have a barn for animals they purchase,” said Luft. “This is part of one of their many FFA projects. They track the animal’s feed intake, costs and growth.

Then, they take it to the Genesee County Fair and sell it at auction.

This gives them the opportunity to determine their profits.” Such real-world experience is invaluable.

The Oakfield-Alabama Advisory Board that supports the Elba and Oakfield-Alabama FFA chapters is made up of parents and local business owners from the community, and the advisors from the FFA along with both schools’ superintendents. “We came up with the idea to hold this type of dinner to support both FFA groups, and we are hoping funds from this dinner will help the kids receive funds for items they need, such as the official dress clothing,” Luft

Oakfield-Alabama FFA members enjoy their agriculture studies! said. “The Alumni group will continue to support both districts’ FFA programs, and we are excited to have the two chapters work together on many projects. It is an exciting time for Genesee County with so many youth that have a passion to support and learn about agriculture!”

All funds raised during the FFA dinner event will be split between the two districts. “Our First Annual FFA Alumni Dinner and Dance will take place on Saturday, October 26th at the Elba Fire Department Rec Hall at 7143 Oak Orchard Road in Elba,” said Luft. “Our goal is to raise funds to help offset expenses and enhance and expand the programs of the Oakfield-Alabama and Elba Chapters of FFA. We are looking for donations for our silent auction as well as sponsorships from local farms, agricultural businesses and other businesses and families.”

The evening will begin with hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction when doors open at 6pm. A basket raffle will run throughout the evening. Dinner, served at 7 pm, will be catered by the always exceptional Red Osier Landmark Restaurant. There will be a cash bar, and after dinner, Savage Cabbage will provide music for dancing. The Oakfield-Alabama Elba FFA Alumni Advisory Board members will be present to host along with their officers: Kendra Lamb, President; Laura Luft, Vice President; Pete Zeliff, Jr., Treasurer and Melissa Haacke, Secretary. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem.

Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield.

Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly.

Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply.

There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies.

Here are some important questions you should ask: • Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown?

• Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet?

• If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)?

Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines.

A breast cancer diagnosis is something no one wants to receive. But the burden of breast cancer is substantial. In fact, the World Health Organization notes that breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women worldwide.

Thankfully, breast cancer survival rates are high in many parts of the world, particularly in developed countries such as the United States, Canada and Japan. While survival rates are lower in developing countries, it is encouraging to know that the average five-year survival rates are as high as 90 percent in some nations. That suggests that the strategies used to successfully fight breast cancer in developed nations may one day prove as effective in developing nations, potentially leading to a sharp decline in global breast cancer deaths.

• Hormonal therapy: Estrogen makes hormone-receptorpositive breast cancers grow, and hormonal therapy, which may be referred to as “anti-estrogen” therapy, aims to reduce the amount of estrogen in the body and block its action on breast cancer cells.

• Targeted therapies: These therapies, which are generally less likely than chemotherapy to harm normal, healthy cells, target specific characteristics of the cancer cells. Cancer cells can have many characteristics, so there are various types of targeted therapies.

Breast cancer treatments can be highly effective in the fight against breast cancer, particularly when the disease is caught in its early stages.

These can include everything from preferred pharmacy and mail-order prescription discounts to dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits. And for 2020, many Medicare Advantage plans will offer supplemental benefits that provide additional assistance to people with chronic illness, such as nonemergency transportation, virtual medical visits, caregiver support, nutritional counseling and meal delivery, and air conditioning, among others.

5. Work with a professional to understand your choices.
