585-802-1544 The relat ionship bet w een paint and m ood Painting is one of the easiest and least expensive w ays to transform the look of a space. The colors homeow ners choose for their w alls can give rooms their ow n unique feel and even affect the moods of the people w ithin them. Finding the right shade for a bedroom or kitchen involves more than just selecting the first color that catches your eye. Design experts and psychologists alike say it may be w orthw hile to choose a color that helps you feel good rather than just follow ing design trends. The paint color you pick may add energy to a space or create a tranquil retreat w here you can unw ind at the end of the day. Blue: To create a spa-like environment and a more serene space, look to shades of blue in soft variations. Cool blues are soothing colors that can help low er stress levels and promote sleep. That’s w hy blue is a frequent fixture in bedrooms and bathrooms. Just be advised that too much blue can make a room appear cold and stark, so balance out blue w ith some w armer accents. Orange: M any people do not immediately consider bright orange for their homes, but w hen used as an accent shade, orange can really brighten up a home. Orange is considered a shade that expands creativity and imparts a youthful appeal to a space. Consider an orange accent w all or a burst of color w ith orange throw pillow s. If pumpkin orange is a little too bold for you, tone it dow n by choosing a more pastel, peachy hue, w hich is equally w arm and energizing. Red: Red stimulates energy and appetite, w hich is w hy the shade is so popular in restaurants and home dining spaces. Red is a good choice for social gathering rooms but may not be the w isest choice for a bedroom, as the color may prove overstimulating.

Updating the Kitchen Opening up shelving is a w ay to put a fresh, m odern spin on your existing kitchen layout. You can order new cabinets w ith glass panels or sim ply rem ove the doors from your existing ones. Open shelving is a perfect place to display dishes. For a crisp look, try stacks of w hite plates and bow ls. If you’re looking for an edgy feel, try patterned or bright-colored ones. Adding new hardw are to cabinets is also an inexpensive w ay to im prove the look of your kitchen. Since faucets are the m ost-used item in the kitchen, a new m odel can m ake a big im pression. To com plem ent your new faucet, look to update your counters as w ell. Granite rem ains a popular choice because of its high style and durability.

Green: Green can evoke composure and tranquility and w orks in any room of the house. Since green is the primary color of nature, it also w orks w ell for those people w ho w ant to bring some of the outdoors inside and w ork w ith the fresh starts and new grow th that green can inspire. To make green feel less subdued and sleepy, w ork w ith its complementary opposite, red, by using a few bold red accents here and there to balance out the tranquility of green. Purple: People have long related purple to royalty, and this dramatic color can add a formal, regal aspect to a home depending on the hue. Purple also may help stimulate the creative side of the brain. In paler shades of lavender, purple can seem almost ethereal and spiritual. Some designers suggest avoiding purple in a bedroom because that is a place you w ant your brain to rest rather than be stimulated. Yellow : Few colors are more vibrant than yellow, w hich can help stimulate conversation and make thoughts more focused. A luminous shade of yellow is an ideal w ay to make any space more w elcoming and bright. Just use it sparingly, as too much yellow may not be a good thing. Yellow accents mixed w ith touches of purple can offer the balance needed to prevent yellow rooms from overw helming residents and guests. Home decorators should keep in mind that colors can be blended to create the desired environment. A color scheme based on complementary colors, or those opposite on the color w heel, may fit. Otherw ise, analogous color schemes, or those colors that are next to one another on the color w heel, can create a variation that suits your design needs.

Men that look no further than their outsides, think health an appurtenance unto life, and quarrel with their constitutions for being sick; but I that have examined the parts of man, and know upon what tender filaments that fabric hangs, do wonder that we are not always so; and considering the thousand doors that lead to death, do thank my God that we can die but once. ~Thomas Browne

DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please discuss the use of ultrasounds during routine pregnancies? How many typically are performed, and are there any possible negative effects on the fetus? Are doctors today performing more ultrasounds (including 3-D ultrasounds) just because they can and because it’s exciting for the expectant parents, or is there a medical reason for performing these? My daughter-in-law is in her sixth month and has had two ultrasounds, plus a 3-D session. She is under the impression that she will have at least one more. To my knowledge, this is not a high-risk pregnancy (she’s 26 and everything is going fine). I’m just wondering if so many sessions are really needed and what is known about the effects on the fetus. -- G.M. ANSWER: There is some controversy over whether an ultrasound poses risks to the developing fetus. The Food and Drug Administration has noted that there may be some heating of tissues and that any long-term risks are unknown. I did find studies showing that there is no long-term risk of leukemia, hearing loss or abnormal eye development. A 2013 guideline from multiple groups, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, recommended a standard first-trimester ultrasound, and a standard second- or third-trimester ultrasound. Any other ultrasounds would be based on a clinician’s concern for a potential problem. The guideline specifically states: “Fetal ultrasound should be performed only when there is a valid medical reason, and the lowest possible ultrasonic exposure settings should be used to gain the necessary diagnostic information.” I don’t have enough information to know why your daughter-in-law has had more ultrasounds than is usually recommended for a normal pregnancy. Perhaps her obstetrician has a low-level concern she hasn’t shared with her, or your daughter-in-law with you. While not the case for her, I am concerned about the growing trend of so-called keepsake ultrasounds that are not performed for valid medical reasons, such as those done in shopping malls. These might not be administered with the same degree of expertise and safety as a medical ultrasound. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 78 and have had urinary tract infections continually for the past eight or nine months. My urologist prescribed methenamine for six months, then a month of cephalexin, then back to the first prescription. Why is it so hard to get rid of UTIs? What would you recommend? - A.C.S. ANSWER: Frequent urine infections are common. However, it is important to find out if this is the same infection that hasn’t ever gone away, or a series of new infections. An infection that doesn’t go away needs an evaluation for something abnormal in the urinary tract, such as a kidney stone. Your urologist is treating you with medication to prevent new infections. Methanamine is a urinary antiseptic, and cephalexin is a broadspectrum antibiotic. You didn’t tell me if you are a man or a woman. Men with recurrent infections should be evaluated for prostate issues. Women with recurrent UTIs frequently are affected by atrophic vaginitis. There are many other causes. It’s worth discussing further with your urologist. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. I want to thank my neighbor across the street on Broxbourne Drive in Fairport for helping to plow my driveway after the snowstorm on February 16 when he saw that my snowplow was too small to tackle the amount of snow that had piled up on my driveway. He wouldn’t even accept the money I offered him for his troubles. I want to thank the Webster Goodyear on Empire Blvd. for filling my tires with air when they were low on February 13 during the coldsnow spell we had that weekend. The man not only filled my tires, he didn’t charge me for it. I was on my way out to Hilton to see my girlfriend and I made it with plenty of time to enjoy together! I wish to send a big shout out THANK YOU to the snow plow driver who pushed the snow out of my

driveway Tuesday 2/16/16. I was out shoveling the remaining piles from an earlier plow, when you stopped and pushed it out of the way! What a blessing it was to me! You are an angel! Thank you from the house near the LeRoy American Legion! I’d like to thank all those good citizens who helped me round up my two horses when they decided to make their great winter escape on Wednesday morning 2/17/16. They trotted down snow covered roads, Jackson & South, Holley. Cindi Davis saw me trying to catch the rouge ponies and gave me a ride to keep up with the horses. Once I caught the horses I had to walk them home. Cindi stayed behind me with her car flashers on to warn traffic. Two other good citizens helped, John Carp & a red SUV; I was unable to get her name. A big THANKS to all!!

Join us, we need more U’s or soon we all will be paying more taxes.lf is it worth it?! I think not! Is this true? What a scam, if true, when our military people don’t always receive a paycheck on time... Family members of the local mobile home park get special treatment from the employees who work for the park. And the employees happen to be relatives. They get their driveways plowed for free. Work done on their home for free. They can use empty lot parking for free – where we get charged $25. The rest of the residents have to pay for everything! And get rent hikes!! In this mobile home park – there is no justice!

Diet and exercise needs change as men and women age Maintaining a healthy weight is important at any age. But avoiding being overweight or obese can be particularly crucial for seniors, considering many illnesses are tied to body weight. Maintaining a healthy immune system also can require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet. The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Medical Center in Virginia says people need to change how they eat for every decade they reach. Caloric intake should be reduced because individuals are generally moving around less, have less muscle and their metabolic rates decline. People who find that they are having trouble losing weight in their 50s and older may be basing weight-loss goals on calorie recommendations for younger people. One challenging thing about eating less overall is supplementing with more nutrient-rich foods. Older bodies still require similar amounts of protein, vitamins and minerals as younger ones, but older men and women must balance that need with their need to consume less calories. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources, including beans, and choosing whole grains over refined starchy foods can be the key. Watch what you drink, as well. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages may be packed with calories you don’t need. Choose unsweetened beverages and opt for water as much as possible. Protect yourself against dehydration, which can be harder to detect as you get older. In addition to modifying food and beverage choices and reducing their calorie intake, seniors should continue to exercise. Healthy eating paired with moderate exercise remains one of the best combinations for healthy weight loss or weight maintenance. The goal is to consume fewer calories and expend more energy. While cardiovascular exercises can be a good way to get the heart pumping and stimulate your metabolic rate, as you age you should perform strength-training and weight-bearing exercises as well. Muscle mass naturally diminishes with

age, and according to the Mayo Clinic if you avoid strength exercises you can eventually lose muscle and increase the percentage of fat in your body. Strength training also helps you develop stronger bones, which can help prevent fractures. In addition, as you gain muscle, your body will begin to burn calories more efficiently, making your time in and out of the gym more productive. Apart from diet and exercise, aging adults may need to consult with their doctors about nutritional supplements. Your body may produce less stomach acid as you get older, making it more difficult to absorb vitamins from food, including vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Aging skin is less able to transform sunlight into the vitamin, which can affect the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Deficiencies in vitamins D and B12 and calcium can result in a number of health conditions. Routine blood work can help pinpoint whether you are deficient in key nutrients. The body’s nutritional and fitness needs change as a person ages. Those uncertain about the lifestyle changes they will need to make should speak with their physicians.

Rush Auxiliary seeks scholarship applicants The Rush Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary Wilkins Scholarship Award was created in memory of Grace “Betty” Wilkins for her contributions to the Rush community through her generous volunteer efforts. Grace “Betty” Wilkins was born on April 19, 1927 and died on March 26, 1999. Betty owned and operated Annie’s restaurant in Rush, NY from June 1950 - November 1968. She was an active member of the Rush Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary for many years. She was also active in the Rush Senior Citizens, Order of the Eastern Star, and the American Red Cross. Betty also volunteered to support fundraisers for the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, as well as other charitable organizations. The Rush Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary Wilkins Scholarship Award was established in 1999 with a considerable donation to the Auxiliary from Betty’s husband, Laverne ( Jake) Wilkins. Due to Betty’s numerous volunteer activities, one of the criteria for this scholarship is the amount and diversity of recipients’ public service. The first scholarship of $300 was awarded to each of two residents of the Town of Rush in 2000. As of June 2015, the Auxiliary has awarded $26,600 to 26 residents of the Town of Rush. This year, a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of $3,000 will be awarded to up to three residents of the Town of Rush, depending on the number of qualified candidates who apply and are selected. Individuals must follow these guidelines when applying for the Wilkins scholarship: 1. Applicant must be a resident of the Town of Rush. 2. Applicant must provide evidence of satisfactory grades by including an official

Landscaping (Family Features): Yard work can take over the weekends all year long. One of Landscape Management’s “10 Trends for 2010” is devoting more land to shrubs and perennials and less to grass. Not only does this add curb appeal and ecofriendliness, it cuts down on maintenance and the time required to keep the outdoor area well maintained. Talk to your local nursery or cooperative extension office to find plants that are well-suited to your area. The more adapted plants are to the local climate, the less you have to do for them and the less likely you are to need to replace those that don’t thrive. You can also look into xeriscaping gardening techniques that reduce the need for supplemental watering - and into creating rain gardens to take advantage of those areas that receive too much water.

Budget and plan for marketing and advertising. It’s important to get the word out about the new business. While this can start with family and friends, eventually the efforts will have to go beyond. Think about community-based activities that can advertise the new business. Work with schools and community organizations if yours is a niche business for children or seniors. A Web site and newspaper advertising, both in print and online, can be a good starting point.
