PREPARING FOR A NIGHT OUT

Know the dress code. Dress accordingly for the destination and planned activity. The dating and socializing resource Girls Chase advises that slim, black jeans can look classy on a night out. Footwear is important as well, especially if you will be doing some walking or dancing. Women who choose to wear heels may want to stash a foldable pair of flats in their handbags in the event they need some relief.

PAW’S CORNER

How to train an excited, reactive dog

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 1-year-old puppy, “Shellie,” gets very excited when she sees another dog approaching. Because she’s already 26 pounds, I’m worried that she’ll soon break away from me while on walks. What can I do? -- Glen H., Plattsburgh, New York

DEAR GLEN: Keeping control of your dog on the leash is such an important skill -- and there is a way to achieve that with Shellie.

First, work on curbing overall reactivity. Does Shellie get really excited when the leash appears? Does she practically drag you out the door for walks? Get control of that first:

-- Bring out the leash, but don’t put it on Shellie right away. Wait until she’s calm, then attach the leash.

-- Next, walk away from the door. Lead Shellie around the house. She’ll be pretty confused, and that’s fine.

-- Stand at the door and have her sit. Open the door slightly, then close it. Repeat. Repeat again until Shellie is staring at you like, “are you nuts?”

-- Now, exit the house, but only if Shellie stays by your side or slightly behind you. If she tries to rush out, repeat the door exercise.

Now, let’s address that reactivity on walks. Here are a few tips that can help:

-- A sturdy, short leash is essential to maintaining control.

-- Train Shellie to walk at your side with a little slack in the leash.

-- Work on core commands when no other dogs are around: Come, Sit, Stay, Heel.

-- Place yourself between Shellie and an approaching dog. Move her to your other side and keep her slightly behind you. You’re her protector right now.

-- Avoid practicing “meet and greets” with other dogs until Shellie is no longer reactive on sight.

ese training methods are just a start, but they’ll put you both on the right track. Most importantly, be consistent with training and daily walks.

Redefine A Space With An Interior Decorator

Interior decorators work with people of all budgets. Homeowners sometimes wrestle with the practicality of hiring a decorator, wondering why they should spend the money when they can do the work themselves. But hiring a professional interior decorator can ensure the job is done right, within budget and completed within a reasonable amount of time.

Homeowners often have no idea where to begin when attempting to establish flow from room to room in their homes. Decorators can help homeowners tailor the interiors of their homes to produce the desired vibe.

Hiring a designer can help a person avoid making potentially costly design errors. An aesthetically appealing house also can increase the home’s value, setting a property above others in terms of appeal. Even though the designer will charge a fee, the investment may be well worth the expense when the room is done right the first time.

Interior decorators have numerous resources at their disposal. Fine tuned to the world of design, they understand which trends will come and go and also which design ideas have staying power. In addition, decorators will be in touch with vendors in the industry, connecting homeowners with the best of the best.

In addition to expertise and resources, interior decorators have eyes that will be trained on things homeowners may not have noticed or even realized can be done. A designer may envision removing a room to create more space or knocking a wall down to let more natural light into a room.

FREE HOME ENERGY IMPROVEMENTS

The PathStone Weatherization Assistance Program is available for income-eligible households in Monroe County located outside of the city limits.

According to a survey of its users, the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor found that the average kitchen remodeling project took six weeks to complete. While some homeowners might be turned off by the prospect of having little or no access to their kitchens for more than a month, HomeAdvisor warns that the length of time it takes to complete a kitchen remodeling project depends on a host of factors, including the scope of the project. Some homeowners reported to HomeAdvisor that their projects lasted for several months, though those projects required extensive work, including moving walls and rearranging plumbing. Others who only replaced the flooring and countertops in their kitchens were back in business in just three weeks. Homeowners should always receive a projected completion date when soliciting estimates from contractors. But it’s also important that homeowners plan for unforeseen problems that may arise during the project, thereby extending the length of time necessary to complete it.

The American Hotel & its Four Generations of Reynolds Family Members

According to current owner, Pat Reynolds, the American Hotel has been a landmark in the Lima, NY community for more than 160 years, and for over 100 years, the Reynolds family has been its guardian. e large yellow painted brick structure with columned portico on the corner of Routes 5 & 20 and 15A, lies at the heart of the community, at its crossroads “between Boston, Buffalo, and beyond” since the late 18th century, welcoming travelers of all walks of life.

Since 1920, the hotel has been owned and operated by the Reynolds family, who operates the restaurant and bar on the first floor, rents out rooms on the second floor, and lives on the third. In 1920, amidst Prohibition when the bar turned into a soda fountain, the hotel offered a full menu including breakfast, lunch, and dinner and catered to the travelers of Routes 5&20. e repeal of Prohibition in 1933 changed the business into a successful licensed establishment, and it was the only licensee in Lima until the mid-1940s. During this period, owner John K. Reynolds hired bartender, Jimmy Hendrick, who remained with the American Hotel until his death 48 years later. e Reynolds say Hendrick “was as much a fixture at the hotel as the pillars supporting the front porch.”

John F. Reynolds (“Junior”) married Aretha Costello of Livonia Center in 1940 and took over management of the business from his father in 1946. At this time, during World War II, the dinner business dwindled, and the owners shorted the menu to just lunches. is worked out well because between 1941 and 1953, Junior and Aretha were too busy parenting seven children (five boys and two girls) to run a full restaurant, bar, and hotel. In 1942, long term employee, Dorothy Magar, came to the hotel and has remained to this day.

In the 1950s, Junior and Aretha had a prosperous business despite the increase of licensees in town and the opening of the NYS ruway in 1954, which turned Routes 5 & 20 into just another east-west thoroughfare. Many motels and restaurants on 5 & 20 went out of business in the ‘50s and never reopened.

In 1955, the American Hotel changed again – the sign over the bar that read “NO LADIES served at the bar” came down for good and bar stools were placed up against the men’s tall standing bar. Many people still remark how short they feel sitting at the bar.

In the ‘60s and ‘70s, business was steady, and Reynolds says many a Friday night was spent by Junior and the locals watching boxing matches on the black and white RCA television, and on Sundays they watched either the Browns or Giants football games.

In July 1979, Junior died, and an era ended. In 1971, Terry Reynolds – the youngest of the seven children – came from

Michigan State to help his ailing Dad run the hotel. Pat (fi h) returned from the Navy in 1974. And in 1983, Rose (sixth) re-settled in Lima a er various careers took her from San Francisco to New Hampshire. us, the third generation of Reynolds’ helped their mother in the hotel’s daily operation.

In 1992, Aretha Reynolds passed away, and Pat became owner with his sister Rose’s help. Rose’s delicious homemade soups have grown an impressive reputation in the Greater Rochester Area and beyond.

e Hotel today remains an institution in the region, providing quaint accommodations, delicious food, libations, and hearty soup, thriving on hospitality and goodwill. Many employees have been with e American Hotel for at least a decade.

Sadly, age caught up with the portico and it is in serious need of repair. e historic structure demanded appropriate repair and restoration. ankfully, they received a grant from the Landmark Society of Western New York, but due to inflation and complications beyond their control, the grant does not fully cover the cost to properly restore the portico.

As the portico is now deteriorated and actively collapsing, demolition began on May 6th, and with a sense of urgency, the Reynolds family seeks the community’s help to help bridge the gap between the grant funding and the actual cost to save this historic structure to allow future generations to experience the American Hotel, a longstanding tradition in Western New York.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Low Iron Levels Might Affect Blood Donor’s Depression

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am wondering if there is any link between low iron and depression/anxiety. I am a 37-yearold woman, and I started taking Lexapro a few years ago. I upped my dose last year because I wasn’t feeling great, and my doctor and I decided that it was a good step to take. During the years that I have been taking Lexapro, I have also been a regular blood donor. I am CMV-negative, so I have blood suitable for newborns. The Red Cross says I am a “hero for babies,” and I enjoy doing something good. I haven’t donated in about five months, and I am feeling significantly better regarding my depression. I know that donating blood affects iron levels, but does it also affect the concentration of Lexapro in my body? If not, can low iron be contributing to my depression? I would love to know the answer so that I can possibly continue to donate, perhaps less frequently. -- J.M.

ANSWER: First, thank you for donating so regularly. CMV is a virus most people have been exposed to, and like most herpes viruses, it stays in the body forever. Newborns and premature babies, as well as organ transplant recipients, need CMV-negative blood, and there aren’t many CMVnegative people who can donate.

Depression and anxiety are both tightly linked to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Lexapro doesn’t increase serotonin, but it does make the transmission of serotonin from one nerve cell to another more effective by reducing the reuptake of serotonin at the nerve junction. Low iron levels have been shown to reduce serotonin levels, so this may be part of the reason why your depressive symptoms have been worse.

However, there are many other reasons, both inside and outside of your body, that can make depressive symptoms worse. Still, if you do have low iron levels, you can replace iron faster and keep it normal, despite blood donation and menstruation, with an iron supplement. (It would be best to check with your doctor on this.) If your depression gets better, then this would be pretty good evidence that low iron does affect your mood. (Note: You can have low iron and not have anemia at all.)

Find the right donation frequency so you can still help without putting your mental health in danger.

Here’s A Tip

* From charcoal grilling expert Kingsford, here's a great tip to use when grilling chicken: "When applying a dry rub to chicken pieces, it's o en hard to keep the rub affixed and it's even more difficult to keep the chicken's original, golden color. Try painting chicken pieces with yellow mustard prior to applying the rub. Not only will the rub stay in place, your final product will be visually appealing -- without any trace of mustard flavor."

* When wrapping vegetables in foil packets to grill, make the seams on the sides. is way, the veggie packets can be turned over for even cooking and to avoid burning on one side. You can even label the outside of the foil in permanent marker. It won't affect the taste of the food.

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 large egg

1 cup reduced-fat buttermilk or low-fat milk

Road Test

Save-a-lot, Give-a-lot

Instructors, please be nice to parents and children. Learning to drive, teaching your child to drive, and taking a road test are all stressful enough. Please be kind and courteous. Greet people with a hello and leave them with a goodbye or to have a nice day. It will go a long way for a moment that both new drivers and parents will remember for a long time. If you are having a bad day don’t pass it on to the community members you are serving. It is not an easy job, I am sure, and maybe it is not where you want to be. However, while you’re there, be nice. - Parents

Imagine my delight when the manager at Save-a-lot in LeRoy walked up to me and said: “The gentleman out at the propane bought you a plant, here’s the receipt”! By the time I got up there he was gone. Your wonderful gesture mad not only my day, but I had my 3 little granddaughters with me who talked all the way home about what a wonderful world we live in that people would do that to surprise someone they don’t even know! There are 4 people who will look at that beautiful plant all summer and smile at life’s surprises. Thank you!

District Budget Notice

Stunning Local Scenery

I love springtime when all the flowers start to bloom and the street comes alive. I know I can’t be the only one who gets a smile to my face.

Got our District Budget Notice. I have to ask, why do we need more NEW school buses time after time? Students graduate, new students begin Elementary school. Does the overall student population change that much to justify more buses? Or are buses that are 3 or 4 years old undrivable and unsafe? We have mechanics at most schools to maintain them. I have to drive my car into the ground because I can’t afford a new one every couple years. Then budgeted new Chromebooks. Are students keeping them after graduation? Are the schools reusing what they already have? I don’t see any statistics showing how many NEW students the budget increased for. Feel free to enlighten me if I’m wrong. Please make it simple so I can understand the facts without being manipulated by long, drawn out verbiage meant to confuse and hide real numbers.

Whooping Crane DAY

May 28, 2024

The International Crane Foundation,

located in Baraboo, Wisconsin, helps conserve cranes and their ecosystems around the world. The organization provides information, leadership, and encouragement to help resolve the issues affecting cranes. People need to cooperate to protect and restore Whooping Crane populations and their ecosystems. The holiday serves as an important opportunity to spread awareness to people about the situation with Whooping Cranes.

True or False

Male and female whooping cranes have specific gender names like most animals.

The Whooping Crane was very close to extinction by the year 1973 with less than 50 birds in the entire population.

The Whooping Crane is considered to be among the oldest living bird species on earth.

Whooping Cranes in the wild can have a life span of up to 7-10 years.

Whooping Crane chicks grow at a slow speed during their first summer.

The average adult Whooping Crane flies at a speed of about 7— 15 mph.

The Whooping Cranes usually lay their eggs in clutches with two eggs per clutch.

The Whooping Crane is considered to be the tallest bird in North America.

You can celebrate this holiday and learn more about the whooping cranes by visiting savingcranes.org.
