Serves 4 1 pound morcilla blood sausage 1 pound mushrooms, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 cloves garlic, slivered Salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons white wine 1 cup shelled spring peas 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint 2 tablespoons mint oil Mint Oil 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup chopped mint Pinch of salt Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.

In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side.

Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.

For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

Hello, my name is Beth, and I am a petite diluted torti. I have lived with my Mom for 19 months now.

She rescued me from the Batavia shelter who saved my life.

I was brought in very thin, nearly starved, and kind of sick. The nice people at the shelter nursed me back to health and then my Mom adopted me! I have a canine brother and we love each other a lot. I have great food to eat now and lots of lovies from my Mom.

DEAR BRAD: Ah, the joys of working from home: like your cat walking across the keyboard.

It's clear that your pets are overjoyed to see you at home all day. They're thinking, "Yes! Dad's here! He didn't leave for hours and hours today! We can play with him all day!" And then they pester you for attention nonstop, right? And when you shut them in the bedroom, they're not happy. "Dad's in there! In the other room! Come let us out so we can play with you!"

Like millions of people, your work routine has changed for at least several weeks. That means your pets' routines have changed, too, and you need to establish new ones.

First thing in the morning, give Shelley and Mutt lots of attention. Take Mutt out for a walk and play/training session where you reinforce basic commands and let him burn off energy. Indoors, grab a cat toy and play with Shelley for a bit. If you have a scheduled conference call, take Mutt out again for a few minutes or play with him indoors beforehand.

This may calm him enough that he can remain in the room.

Take frequent five-minute breaks and give attention to your pets each time. Use this remote working as an opportunity to train your pets and spend more time with them.

They can provide plenty of stress relief, too -- something we all need right about now.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there any reason to start taking vitamin D at age 90? I’m in good health except for osteopenia and high blood pressure. How long does it take to have an effect? -- P.S. ANSWER: In your case, there are potentially two good reasons to start taking vitamin D -- if your blood levels are low.

One is that with osteopenia (a condition of low bone mass, a precursor to osteoporosis, which increases risk for bone fractures), replacing low vitamin D can improve bone strength and reverse bone loss. This can keep people from needing other medications for osteoporosis, which are much more likely than vitamin D to have side effects.

Older people with vitamin D deficiency also often have some muscle weakness. If you can’t get out of a chair without using your hands and you have a low vitamin D level, replacing vitamin D may help with the weakness. Of course, there are many causes for weakness in a person and there is no guarantee of effectiveness, but vitamin D is very safe in moderate doses, like 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily. Vitamin D also may reduce fall risk, probably by improving strength, especially in combination with exercise.

Vitamin D works slowly -- weeks to months for muscle effects, and months to years for bone effects.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was seeing my primary care physician every six months for about five years. We had mutual respect, and I enjoyed seeing him. Then, I got diagnosed with breast cancer and had to see other doctors for a long time. Meanwhile, the spinal stenosis my primary care physician had diagnosed was becoming untenable and ruining my quality of life. Even though I am still seeing cancer doctors, I called my primary care physician to make an appointment to discuss the spinal stenosis situation with him.

After a long wait, I finally got someone in my primary care physician’s office and, after another long wait, was informed that he could not see me for six months -- there was not one opening until then. I was flabbergasted and asked to be put on a cancellation list. “We don’t keep those,” the lady responded. I reluctantly took the appointment and decided to wait it out.

Meanwhile, I saw one of my cancer doctors today, and after explaining this situation to him, he replied: “Doctors don’t do that. He obviously doesn’t want you as a patient anymore. I would find another primary care physician.” What is your response to this? I am 71 years old, and other than spinal stenosis and breast cancer (which was caught early and treated with surgery and radiation a year ago), I enjoy reasonably good health. -- J.E.Y. ANSWER: I hope there is another side to this story, since I am horrified that a physician would make a longstanding patient with cancer and spinal stenosis wait six months for an appointment.

That is not appropriate medical care.

While I fully understand the point of view of your cancer doctor -- and would be tempted to find another doctor -- it sounds like saving the relationship you had with your PCP might be worth another try. I think speaking directly with your primary care doctor might clear up any misunderstanding. ***

RECOVERING FROM STROKE (NAPSI)—Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability—in fact, it’s even more disabling than it is fatal. The period following a stroke can be difficult for patients and their loved ones, as they grapple with the uncertainties of recovery.

For example, Sabrina Warren-White was a busy professional when a stroke in left her unable to speak or use her right side. She quickly began a rigorous rehabilitation program and can now speak, walk and use her right arm.

Doctor’s Advice Once acute medical issues are resolved, focusing on rehabilitation is paramount to helping people build their strength, capabilities and confidence, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and Chairman for the Department of Neurology and Co-director for the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and KY Clinic at the University of Kentucky.

“Most patients will recover to some degree, but a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation is crucial because it has been shown to result in better outcomes for patients,” Dr. Goldstein added.

Access to coordinated and intense therapies after a stroke is important because the greatest amount of recovery tends to occur in the first 30 days, Dr. Goldstein said.

“Intensity of rehabilitation therapy matters,” he pointed out. “Patients need access to good rehabilitation services and should continue to work at it, even after that initial recovery period.”

Stay Fed, Stay Safe Life has certainly changed recently. Depending on where you live, it might have changed a lot. Stay home if you're a senior. Stay home if you have a medical condition. That's what we've been told.

That's all well and good, but what if we really need to shop for food? What if we couldn't stock up last week because the Social Security benefit hadn't made it to our checking account yet?

If you're really in a jam for food, call the food bank. Of all the places, that one is most likely to still be open. They're trying to keep people fed, especially seniors, as well as children who don't get free meals because the schools are now closed. Ask if they have a driveup pantry where you can be handed some bags of food through the car window. You might find that food is being distributed at places like the senior center or a school parking lot or via Meals on Wheels, even if you aren't signed up as a participant.

If you do dare to enter a store, a number of grocery stores are designating the first hour or two in the morning for seniors only.

Not all stores are doing this, so call first. If they don't do it, suggest it. You're more likely to find the things you need during this time as the shelves will (hopefully) be restocked overnight. And with fewer people in the store, you're less likely to run into someone with the virus, but stay away from other people anyway. If you go, be sure to take sanitizing wipes for the cart handles.

Remember, if you go out, you're really not safe from the virus.

Do it as little as possible.

Do you relish the idea of an afternoon nap? If so, you're in good company. According to the National Sleep Foundation, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Napoleon, and Albert Einstein each fancied afternoon naps. Youngsters nap, and so do many seniors. But by and large, humans are part of the minority of mammals that do not sleep for short periods of time throughout the day, instead dividing their days between sleep and wakefulness. However, there are some benefits to catching a midday snooze. The Mayo Clinic says napping can be a way to catch up on sleep lost during the night or if a person is feeling sleep-deprived. It also may be a way to relax, increase alertness and improve mood. Naps should take place before 3 p.m. and not exceed 20 minutes. The longer and later one naps, the greater the potential it will interfere with nighttime sleeping or backfire and cause daytime grogginess. TF203783 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Students at Cole Valley Christian Schools (CVCS) in Idaho have learned all about pollinators and the structure and function of plants that support them in the classroom. They’ll now take those learnings one step further by establishing a garden on campus to increase pollinator activity in the area.

“Students will be so engrossed in planting, observing and engineering that they won’t know they are even learning,” said Julie Morgan, the STEM coordinator with CVCS. Pollinators Postgrad Practical education shouldn’t stop after high school. Students at California’s Mills College are planting a “green screen” along a roadside fence next to a local dog park and farm; they’ll also maintain the area and act as “Bee Ambassadors” in the community, promoting sustainable agricultural practices that improve pollinator health.

By transforming a patch of bare ground into a thriving plant community, the Mississippi Entomological Museum at Mississippi State University will also showcase the importance of diverse forage. Assistant Research Professor JoVonn Hill hopes this project will increase awareness of Black Belt prairies and highlight their importance to local pollinators.

It’s sad that someone must vent about people leaving the painted rocks in parks. All they want to do is brighten someone’s day. They take the time to do this, which I think is great. Especially now, when hiking is about the only thing that we can do. I can’t wait to find one and pay it forward.

They rely on the hand sanitizer to effectively prevent illness. Regarding the person who complained that their groceries were not packed properly: I had the same problem, plus the bags were packed too heavy. I solved both problems. I fold my reusable bags and place them in one bag.

When I get to the checkout, I place one folded bag on the conveyer and place the groceries I want in that bag behind it. I do the same with the second bag, etc. Produce is with produce, meat with meat, etc., and bags are light. I leave the store a happy person.

To the person who ranted about Painted Rocks littering the parks, when I read it, all I could say is wow! I love to see the painted rocks in the parks, and I do not consider them as litter. Everyone I know smiles when they see them!

I agree with you about littering; what you bring into the park should be what you take out with you. But the painted rocks spread joy and happiness, which is what we need more of, especially during this time. Please do not be so grumpy about the painted rocks.

Son’s Admiration Sets Course for Firefighting

T

hey were born in Korea, and at just four months of age, twins Andrew and Philip would embark on an extraordinary voyage to Fairport, New York, as the adopted sons of Michael and Bernadette Palermo. They would soon experience the wonders of living in America and the opportunity afforded to all Americans.

Their father, Michael, is an Impact Manager for RQI Partners, LLC (Resuscitation Quality Improvement) working with clients who use their resuscitation programs. When the Palermos moved to Fairport, Michael became involved in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and worked as an EMT for over 15 years before the travel demands of his company prevented him from working with any local EMS agencies.

After September 11th, Michael applied to the Egypt Fire Department and became a firefighter in November of 2001. He has maintained his NYS EMT certification for over 30 years. In addition, Michael has held several leadership roles in the department and is currently the president of the board of trustees.

As an active member of the Egypt Fire Department, Michael would respond to many alarms with his two boys in tow. Upon arrival, he would leave the boys in the good hands of retired chief Harold “Bumps” Mance. Bumps was a veteran firefighter of over 35 years, and he loved entertaining the boys until the fire trucks returned.

Watching his dad respond to alarms coupled with encouragement from “Bumps” further reinforced the idea of becoming a firefighter for Andrew. “I quickly observed that Andrew truly relished becoming a firefighter because he had a true interest in helping others,” explains Michael.

During his elementary and middle school education at St. John’s and St. Joseph’s Schools, Andrew looked forward to the school visits to the local fire house. He would further explore his interests in firefighting by accompanying his dad during truck maintenance sessions where he was exposed to the different types of fire vehicles and the myriad of equipment used to fight fires and rescue people trapped in buildings or cars.

This further fueled his motivation to join the fire explorer group sponsored by the Fairport Fire Department. As an Explorer, Andrew participated in many of the drills and simulations active firefighters experienced in preparation for real emergencies. “I was always drawn to the idea that I could be part of a team whose primary goal was to serve the community and actually make a difference in people’s lives,” Andrew explains.

Andrew had another calling as well. As a child, he had a habit of banging on pots and pans with wooden spoons. His sense of timing and rhythm were uncanny. His friends and parents are not surprised that at the age of 20, he is a drummer in a local band, “The Fender

Benders,” and alongside his dad, is an active member of the Egypt Fire Department.

Andrew’s commitment to the department was never more evident than when he completed his formal firefighting training and then rushed home to get dressed for his McQuaid High School graduation. “One of my favorite activities is making school visits and talking to students about fire safety.

It’s my chance to Andrew Palermo, communicate a sense Egypt Fire Department excitement and pride in being a member of the Egypt Fire Department. I never know who will be inspired by my presentation,” shares Andrew.

“We are very proud of Andrew’s achievements as a firefighter and now as the youngest member of the board of trustees. He is a great role model for any young person considering joining the fire service,” said Egypt Fire Chief, Alex Klimchuk.

Today, Andrew continues his studies at Finger Lakes Community College on route to his long-term career goal of working in law enforcement.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.

Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.

While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.

Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust.

In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.
