“He that plants trees loves others besides himself…”

~ English Proverb

Lots of us have an affinity for the soil. Whether or not we have a “green thumb,” we enjoy working with growing things. We plant flowers that we expect to later delight us with their lovely, fragrant blossoms. We may plant a vegetable garden and hope to enjoy some truly fresh (and quite inexpensive) vegetables for our table. The one who plants trees is thinking less of his own enjoyment than of his children or others who will benefit from the shade or the fruit from the trees for many years. Remembering those who planted the trees we enjoy today, let’s plant trees now for tomorrow. Whatever a family chooses to pay for a funeral, we always render the finest, most considerate service possible.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Feb. 24, 1988, the U.S. Supreme Court votes 8-0 to overturn the $200,000 settlement awarded to the Reverend Jerry Falwell for his emotional distress at being parodied in Hustler magazine. W hy a clean air filter is important in your vehicle M otorists routinely check their tires for proper inflation, top off engine fluid levels and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand the importance of keeping engine air filters clean. Engine air filters are a relatively inexpensive vehic le part, but they perform a very important job. For every gallon of gas a c ar burns, it uses the equivalent of 12,000 gallons of air, and that air must be filtered to help keep an engine c lean. Air filters catch all of the dust, grime, insects, sap, leaves, and any other debris that may get sucked up past the air intake of the vehicle’s grill and into the engine itself. W ithout the air filter, those c ontaminants may compromise the engine, causing corrosion and abrasion. If the air filter in the engine becomes too dirty and is not changed regularly, the engine is starved of air. Clean air filters allow just the right ratio of air to fuel to enable the engine to function properly. Engines need adequate air for the c ombustion proc ess to take plac e. W ithout the proper c ombustion levels, vehic les c annot perform properly or efficiently and the engine may burn more gas or get few er miles to the gallon. A dirty filter also c an rob an engine of pow er. Drivers may notic e sluggish acceleration. Air filters also can get so dirty that the engine stalls completely. But such a problem only develops after considerable neglect. Air filters may not need to be replaced at each and every oil c hange servic e c all. M any technicians advise replacing the filter every 8,000 miles. How ever, drivers w ho live in particularly dry and dusty regions may need to replace filters more frequently. M echanic s c an often detec t w hen an air filter needs to be replaced. If he or she notices the air filter is particularly dirty, then it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing the filter is a relatively inexpensive repair for the amount of performance and peace of mind a new filter provides. Apply vaseline to battery posts for better contact.

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

M ak e school day m ornings easier Wake up earlier. Sleep might seem like a precious commodity, but w aking up just 10 to 15 minutes earlier can remove some of the stress from w eekday mornings w ithout costing you a lot of sack time. Let kids sleep in until their normal w akeup time, using your extra 10 or 15 minutes to show er or enjoy your morning cup of coffee before the house is abuzz w ith activity.

Though early French settlers had brought the tradition of Mardi Gras, Spanish governors later banned the celebrations.

* Put A Lid On It: Get to know the best way to cook up your favorite foods. Traditional grilling foods - small steaks, burgers, chicken, fish - do best over direct heat (fire directly under the food), while thicker meats like roasts, brisket or pork shoulder benefit most from indirect heat (fire off to the side). No matter which way you’re cooking, it’s always best to keep the grill lid down - and don’t peek too much! Heat escapes every time you open the lid.

How To Incorporate More Fruit Into Kids’ Meals 1. Let children pick their own fruit. Giving kids a few options to choose from will make them more likely to eat one of them at mealtime. Consider taking your child to a farmer’s market or the produce section of the grocery store so he can become familiar with the large variety of fruits available and pick a few new ones. 2. Serve fruit for dessert. Show kids that fruit can be just as tasty as candy or cookies for dessert. Try frozen bananas, mandarin oranges, or pineapple; mango smoothies, or watermelon balls for some fruity treats. 3. Make fruit a habit. Incorporating fruit into every meal makes it a routine that’s easy to keep. For breakfast, put berries or bananas into cereal or on top of whole grain waffles. For lunch, put pear slices on a peanut butter sandwich, serve “cantaloupe smiles” or let your child scoop out a kiwi. Filling up on fruit will make children less likely to be tempted by empty-calorie snacks. 4. Make it easy. Kids are more likely to eat fruit when it’s easy to “grab and go,” especially when it’s already packaged into manageable portions. Keep fruit front and center on the kitchen counter or in the refrigerator on the bottom shelf, where kids can see and reach it. 5. Give kids a lunchtime option they already enjoy that includes fruit. The new Lunchables With Fruit (www.lunchables.com) provide a full serving of fruit with Dole Mandarin Oranges or Pineapple Tidbits in 100 percent fruit juice. The new line includes four kid-favorite varieties, including Peanut Butter + Jelly Sandwich; Turkey + Cheddar Cracker Stackers; Ham + American Cracker Stackers and Extra Cheesy Pizza. 6. Make fruit fun. Make fruit kabobs, fruit cut into shapes with cookie cutters and yogurt fruit parfaits to entice kids to eat more fruit. Working together in the kitchen with kids is time well spent. 7. Parents - eat more fruit! Setting the example of eating more fruit is a powerful way to get your kids to also. Positive encouragement helps, too.

Spicy Avocado Dip 1 fully ripe Mexican Avocado (about 8 ounces) 1 cup sour cream 1 package (3 ounces) cream cheese, room temperature 1/4 cup sliced pickled jalapeño chilies from a jar, drained 2 tablespoons pickled jalapeño liquid from jar 2 tablespoons sliced olives, optional Cut avocado lengthwise around the pit, and twist halves to separate. Strike pit with a knife blade, and pull to remove. Scoop out flesh with a spoon, and place in a blender. Add sour cream, cream cheese, chilies and chili liquid, and blend until smooth, adding a little more liquid if mixture seems too thick. Transfer to a serving bowl, and garnish with sliced olives if desired. Cover and refrigerate until serving time. Serve with tortilla chips, crackers or raw vegetables. Yields two cups.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Common Shaving Myth Debunked DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 48-year-old, athletically fit man with excessive body hair on my back, chest and arms. I see that the younger generation of men at the gyms, pools and beaches seem to all groom (shave) their body hair for better appearance. I started trimming down but have not fully shaved. My concern is whether, when you cut hair, it grows faster. When I’m in my upper 60s or 70s and decide to stop, will my body hair grow to 4 inches long? Does your body hair continue to grow at a normal rate when you’re older, or does it slow down? Please advise. -- M.C. ANSWER: No, it’s a myth that cutting or shaving hair makes it grow faster. It certainly might seem to come in more coarsely, since the cut hair under the surface of the skin is thick. But there is no effect on hair growth. Hair growth rates stay roughly the same throughout adulthood. I am aware that the current trend is for hairless-appearing skin. However, I see a lot of people with infections from shaving. If you do shave, use plenty of mild shaving cream or gel, always use a new, sharp razor, and use a soothing aftershave cream or lotion to help close the pores after shaving. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old male in good health. I take a 40-mg simvastatin and a 150-mcg levothyroxine. I exercise three times a week -- one hour with weights and one hour of aerobics (elliptical and treadmill). On the treadmill, I go from a speed of 3.5 for 25 seconds to 6.0 for 25 seconds. My heart rate goes from 89 to 170 (sometimes 165 to 178) but drops back to about 89 when I return to the slower speed. I have heard that your exercise heart rate should be 212 minus your age times 80 percent. That would be 101. Does my 170 for 25 seconds sound OK? -- E.N.W. ANSWER: No, that sounds too fast for an 86-year-old. The formula you mention is one frequently stated, and it isn’t particularly accurate, since there is a great deal of individual variation. But 170 is very fast for an 86-year-old. I wonder if it’s accurate. A pulse monitor, using electrical impulses, is the most accurate, but even these can be fooled by electrical interference. If it really is so fast, I would worry about an exercise-induced tachycardia, and a visit to your doctor or cardiologist would be a good idea, especially if you are having symptoms of chest discomfort or shortness of breath. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Do peanuts (which are not nuts, but legumes) afford the same health benefits as nuts? -- A. ANSWER: Most of the studies showing benefits of nuts included peanuts as well. Peanuts probably have the same benefits as tree nuts. Unfortunately, many people are allergic to nuts, and many to peanuts. Those people can’t get the benefits of eating nuts, as it is unsafe, even life-threatening on occasion. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

WOMEN’S PROACTIVE APPROACH While research indicates that women are more likely to have cavities than men, females tend to have better overall dental health. Perhaps this is due to the fact that women are nearly twice as likely to have visited the dentist in the past year. As a result of this proactive approach to dental and periodontal care, women have lower rates of gum disease (due to more frequent professional cleanings) and also a higher percentage of retained permanent teeth than men. It seems that women have learned from experience that good oral hygiene and regular dental care are essential since changes in hormonal levels during pregnancy and menopause can raise their risk of gum disease and associated problems (tooth loss).

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we can recommend a personalized oral home care program to meet your specific needs. We’ll take the time to talk with you and answer any questions you may have. Please call us at 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre, where our friendly staff and relaxing environment will put you at ease. P.S. Estrogen deficiency after menopause reduces bone mineral density, which can lead to bone loss that is associated with periodontal disease.

They’re delicious, nutritious and versatile. They’re naturally fatfree, high in vitamin C and a rich source of antioxidants. Americans love them in c ereals, salads, sauces and as toppings and by the handful, but w hen w inter comes around, many people assume fresh blueberry season is over. Not so fast. W hen the snow flies in M inneapolis, things are just heating up in places like Chile. Thanks to a robust South American fruit industry, fresh blueberries now maintain their favored position in North American produce aisles, culinary creations, and home kitchens all year long. The popularity of blueberries has soared in recent years, driven by their impressive nutritional resume. One half-c up of blueberries c ontains just 42 c alories and helps meet the recommended 5 to 9 servings a day of c olorful fruits and vegetables. The “ Little Blue Dynamos” pac k in fiber, potassium, Vitamin C and more cancer-fighting antioxidants than either w ine or green tea. Recent studies also show that fresh blueberries can help keep skin looking younger; help prevent dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease; and serve as a natural anti-inflammatory. Helping the cause significantly is that most people consider fresh blueberries a treat, including children w ho remain blissfully unaw are of the health benefits. Fresh blueberries are easily enjoyed as a grab-and-go snack, but there are other sw eet and savory w ays to beat the w inter blues w ith this superfood.

My sis and I were doing laundry @ Caledonia Laundromat. An older man came in also; he had to use a micro to talk. We conversed with him and said bye upon leaving. We went to a local restaurant and he came in and ordered his food to go. The waitress came and took our bill. He left. We asked her about our bill, she told us he paid our bill. This has never happened to us before. We wish to say Thank you and God bless. KW & DS The Lima VFW, Post 26, wishes to thank the wonderful people who gave to our annual drive for patients and residents of the Canandaigua VA Hospital and Zion House. On Sunday, January 31, Riga Recreation, in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, held its annual “WinterFest”, minus the snow, at the Churchville Elementary

School. The community was treated to the Lions’ “World Famous” Chicken BBQ along with a kid’s carnival, caricature drawings, chair massages, juggling, and magic tricks with The Magic Guy! Thanks go out to all who helped one way or another. The turnout by the Riga community is to be complimented as the Lions sold out all their BBQs and there was a constant flow of the crowd throughout the day. All involved look forward to WinterFest 2017 and hopefully snow for outdoor activities! David Thomas Recreation Supervisor On Tuesday, February 2nd, I was shopping at the Wal-Mart in Canandaigua. While checking out I realized that I had overspent. I’m so thankful for the shopper behind me. She contributed the extra money to cover the difference so I could make my complete purchase. Thank you so much! Grateful Shopper I want to thank the two guys who came out of The Nines on a cold snowy night to help tie up my front bumper after I hit a deer on 20A. It was so nice of them to leave the warmth of the restaurant and help get me on my way. THANK YOU!!!

hit him and just took off! The dog had tags on him where he was from. You would think they would try to find the owner but NO! People nowadays just don’t care! They say karma is bad, but and I hope karma finds whoever did this! Maybe someday you might lose a pet to a hit and run driver!

In early December, I called a local company for service. My kitchen sink drains appeared clogged and overflowing. Service was prompt and courteous within a few hours. The sewer drain was cleaned and a venting air valve was installed. I paid the bill on site. Later, I wrote the company for a specific breakdown of this outrageous charge. To date, weeks later, no reply! Be careful who you hire. Disgruntled Widow

It’s pretty sad when someone hits your dog and doesn’t even stop to see if the dog is dead or not, or even try to find the owner! On Thursday night at about 8:30 to 9pm my daughter’s dog got out. After many hours of looking we found him dead where someone

I am very concerned about the ambulance corps in my town. There is evidence that the drivers regularly use the ambulance to transport themselves to pick up lunches and other food runs. It seems that the ambulances should not be used for this purpose. The volunteers should use their own transportation to do food runs. The ambulance is there for medical purposes and not for personal use. I don’t see the fire department loading 6 foot Hoagies onto their official vehicles and neither should the ambulance.

Ways to stretch your money further Living on fixed income after retirement requires that many retirees make some financial concessions. Retirement income likely won’t equal the income professionals earned while they were still working, so men and women approaching retirement may want to begin prioritizing their purchases and choosing which luxuries they can and cannot live without going forward. Managing on a fixed income may necessitate some changes, but a little frugality and financial wherewithal can ensure seniors need not compromise too much during their golden years. • Change your dining habits. Many people enjoy meals out on the town after getting home from work and spending time with the family. Retirees have more flexible schedules, and adjusting the time of day when they dine out can add up to considerable savings. Many brunch and lunch offerings are less expensive than dinner menus, and seniors can use this to their advantage. Meet up for lunch and spend less. If you prefer take-out, order from the lunch specials and then reheat your food at dinnertime. • Ask about senior discounts. Various restaurants, stores and other retailers offer senior discounts. Inquire about discounts before making purchases and take advantage of any offers. • Pool your resources. Bulk shopping clubs enable individuals to save money on the cost of many goods and services. However, for seniors living in two-person

Living on a fixed income requires seniors to monitor their spending more carefully than they likely had to while they were still working full time.

households, it may seem counterintuitive to purchase items in bulk. Split the cost of shopping club memberships with fellow retirees. This allows you to get discounted prices without having to store excessive amounts of food. • Shop around. Instead of shopping only at stores you’re familiar with, go where the deals are. Many people are surprised to learn that drug stores often charge less than supermarkets for personal grooming products and household supplies. Shopping online also may yield some good deals. Before making any online purchases, familiarize yourself with shipping costs, which may negate the savings. • Sign up for rewards programs. Rewards programs may lead to a few extra promotional emails throughout the week, but the savings reaped can be considerable and well worth the nuisance of seeing your spam folder fill up each day. Many savings clubs have replaced traditional coupons, saving seniors the effort required to scan circulars looking for deals.

A Down-to-Earth Guide to Home Heating and Cooling A better way to heat and cool is right under your feet (Family Features) Increasing energy costs have many homeowners looking for new ways to save money. According to the Department of Energy, the average homeowner pays about $1,900 a year on utilities, most of it going toward heating and cooling bills. Adding insulation and sealing ducts can help, but what can be done to make some significant, long-term savings? A growing number of homeowners are finding savings in their own back yards by utilizing the earth’s natural energy to heat and cool their homes. It’s called geothermal energy - and it can save you some green while you’re going green. Geothermal Energy Geothermal systems - also known as ground source heat pump systems (GSHPS) or geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) have been around for decades but are just now coming to the attention of many homeowners. The Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency have both endorsed ground source heat pump systems as among the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating, cooling and water heating systems available. How It Works The temperature of the earth below the surface - from a few feet to hundreds of feet down - is moderate and fairly constant. In many places it stays in the mid- to upper-50s all year. Instead of burning fossil fuels, a geothermal heat pump absorbs the energy stored in the earth to heat a home in the winter. In the summertime a heat pump rejects the heat from the space and transfers it back into the earth - making it extremely efficient and costeffective. To make it work, you need three basic elements: an underground loop system, a geothermal heat pump, and an air-delivery system. • Loop System: This is a system of high-density polyethylene plastic pipes buried in the ground. They are filled with fluid, a mixture of water and antifreeze, that circulates throughout the pipes. Open-loop systems circulate water drawn from a well. • Geothermal Heat Pump: The geothermal heat pump extracts heat from the fluid within the loop using a vapor-compression refrigeration cycle. This heat is then sent into the home. In the summer, it extracts heat from the indoor air and transfers it to the fluid, which cools as it circulates through the loop. • Air-delivery System: Most geothermal pumps use an electrically driven fan to distribute the air through ducts in the home. A residential system can also be equipped to heat household water, as well. According to the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, a geothermal system has efficiencies 50 to 70 percent higher than other heating systems, and cooling efficiencies 20 to 40 percent higher than available air conditioners. That means direct savings on home utility bills. High-density polyethylene plastic pipes buried in the ground are filled with circulating fluid that absorbs the ground’s heat and brings it indoors.

A Science Fiction Tale of Struggle and Redemption Local author R. E. Smart started writing his first book at the age of 10, after being inspired by the tales his mother would tell of her long lost home planet, Zarr. He didn’t get very far with an old manual typewriter and a demanding school schedule. Over the years he would get out his manuscript and add to it, but again life got busy as he graduated from GCC, then St. John Fisher College and finally the University of Rochester, going on to join the full-time work force. Working on his book in his spare time here and there, he reached the point where he has been able to complete the tale and now wants to share it with others. R. E. Smart is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working in a community mental health center in Western New York. He is an avid science fiction fan who majored in psychology/minored in anthropology in college. Smart wanted to write a story that combined his love of science fiction with his belief in the potential of people to improve their lives, a story that would not only entertain but encourage people as well. Working with a wide range of people from all walks of life who face all sorts of challenges, he wanted to tell a tale of redemption

“ Plenty of people m iss their share of happiness, not because they never found it, but because they didn’t stop to enjoy it.” – William Feather

Smart Nutrition Tips (Family Features) A healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to mean nibbling on bland fare. With strategic substitutions and smart snacking tips, you can still enjoy some favorite foods without compromising your nutritional goals. Seek balance. Fuel your body on a regular basis and include foods from each macronutrient group every time you sit down to eat. That means carbohydrate-, protein- and fat-containing foods. Try to divide your plate this way: a bit less than half of your plate for fruit and vegetables, one third for lean protein (beef, pork, poultry, fish, low-fat dairy, eggs or soy foods) and the remainder for grains (pasta, rice or bulgur). Don’t omit fat - just use a little to enhance flavor. Olive oil, nuts or a thin spread of nut butter are all good choices. Forget bland condiments. If you want to eat better, spice things up. Healthful spices include cinnamon, turmeric, ginger and oregano. You can use spices to add flavor to your dishes or drinks while cutting the amount of calorie-rich ingredients such as oil and sugar. Try mixing spices, citrus and fresh herbs to perk up any vegetarian fare. Be prepared with portable snacks. It can be hard to eat better when you travel, so keep handy a survival kit that includes non-perishable protein and carbohydrate-containing foods. A few good options: Foods with protein - jerky, packs of tuna or salmon requiring no can opener, roasted soy nuts, seeds and small cans of bean dip with a pop-top for easy opening. Carbohydrate-containing foods - packs of oatmeal, prepackaged cereal and homemade trail mix. Put your fork down between bites and chew. Preparing foods that require chewing harder will give you more time to eat and allow your brain to register you are full. It takes at least 20 minutes after eating for your stomach to tell your brain that it is full.

D id you k now ? Opening a dresser draw er to find clothes disorganized and stuffed inside can be frustrating. Bulky c lothes may not seem to fit correctly and other items can become stuck at the back of a draw er, making it difficult to close the draw er properly. Although you may be tempted to purchase an entirely new dresser or give up and store items solely in the closet, try a new tactic. Various organizing experts advise folding and layering clothes vertically in draw ers to create more space and keep things neat. An additional benefit to this method of storage is you can more readily see just w hat you have in the draw er, rather than lifting and looking underneath your clothing. Anyone can give this a try to free up space in their draw ers. This method also w orks especially w ell w ith children’s clothing, giving kids the opportunity to see their clothes and choose their ow n outfits.

Renting - “Often maligned as a product on which you ‘throw your money away,’ rentals have become a much more valued housing option,” said the Morgan Stanley authors.

(NewsUSA) - Tip #1 for Renting * Look at the numbers. Renting might not be the best option. If you’re going to lose money each month, it might make more sense to sell, even if you won’t get your asking price. Consider all potential costs, including property taxes, income taxes on your tenants’ rent, maintenance, and the normal wear and tear your property will experience. Remember that you won’t be able to pocket all of the rent money; you will have to put a portion of it back into the property.
