Fence Etiquette Prevents Disputes: There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Jan. 16, 1979, faced with an army mutiny, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, leader of Iran since 1941, is forced to flee the country. Fourteen days later, the Ayatollah Khomeini, spiritual leader of the Islamic revolution, returned after 15 years of exile and took control of Iran. In November, Islamic militants stormed the U.S. embassy and took 52 Americans hostage, holding them for 444 days.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

Thank You

My sincere gratitude to family and friends for your cards, food, and especially your prayers while I was in the hospital and since my return home. It is a slow recovery, but each day gets better. I especially want to thank Jerry, Jennifer and Gerad, and Colleen and Bryan for all they’ve done for me. Hours spent at the hospital and help since my return home have played such a big part in my return to good health. The doctors and nurses at Strong Memorial Hospital and Dr. Balaji have been wonderful and I appreciate all they have done for me. I wish everyone a very healthy, happy and peaceful New Year.

FILLING IN THE MISSING PIECES Tooth loss resulting from accidents, gum disease, unsuccessful root canal treatment, or decay necessitates treatment to restore chewing/ biting ability and prevent adjacent teeth from moving into spaces left by missing teeth. While dentures and fixed bridgework used to be the most popular options, dental implants have been gaining ground largely because they look, feel, and act like real teeth. Unlike bridges, dental implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support, which helps to protect them from damage. Unlike dentures, implants do not cause unwanted clicking noises or chewing difficulties, nor do they lead to the bone loss that is often associated with denture wear. Implants may take longer and cost more, but most patients think they are worth it.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we offer high quality dentistry for all family members. We are a highly qualified and experienced team of professionals, thoroughly trained, skillful, and sensitive to your individual needs. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre, where our goal is to make each visit a comfortable and positive experience. For superior quality dental care, call 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment. P.S. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, 26 percent of adults have lost all their permanent teeth by age 74.

Power into a New Year with Protein Begin with a bang. With a busy day ahead, it can be tempting to rush out the door and skip breakfast. However, countless studies have shown this first meal of the day is extremely important. Skipping out on a balanced breakfast can drag you down all day, both mentally and physically. Being hungry later in the day may also make you more likely to overeat or nibble on high-calorie snacks. For those mornings when you’re crunched for time, grab a protein-rich ready-to-drink shake or sandwich with egg, cheese and lean meat to give yourself sustained energy for the rest of the day. Work in a workout. In addition to helping ward off disease and manage your weight, regular exercise helps lift your mood by stimulating feel-good chemicals in the brain and boosts energy by helping your body work more efficiently. A combination of aerobic or cardio activity (walking, jogging or running) and muscle-strengthening activity (lifting weights, resistance training or yoga) is the winning formula, according to the most recent Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Power with protein. Your body gets energy from three main sources: carbohydrates, fat and protein. Protein plays a major role in repairing damaged cells, tissues and muscle. Good sources of protein include meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts and vegetables, but the best sources deliver lots of protein without a lot of fat, carbs and sugar. A protein-based snack is a good way to recharge during the day. Keep up on sleep. Quality sleep - and an adequate amount of it - is critical to your overall wellbeing. While you’re sleeping, your body is hard at work healing and repairing from the day, as well as regulating your hormonal balance and protecting your immune system. At the same time, your brain is also recharging to help your mental function, including learning aptitude, problem solving and emotional health. Most adults need an average of 7-9 hours of sleep for optimal performance.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 59 years old and am having problems with my lower abdomen. After colonoscopy and ultrasound, my doctor called to say I have a fatty liver. When asked what that means, I was told to lose weight. I weigh 170 pounds, and am 5 feet, 6 inches tall. Research online suggests that alcohol is an issue, but I don’t drink. I may have a drink or a beer when I go out, but most times I am the designated driver, so I don’t drink. The only medication I take is estradiol-norethindrone 0.5-0.1; I take one daily. Diabetes does not run in my family, and I have not been tested for it. Can you give me information on “fatty liver” and treatment? -- J.A. ANSWER: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is an increasingly common problem; in fact, it is the most common liver disorder in industrialized countries. Recent studies have suggested that 30 percent to 46 percent of people in the U.S. have NAFLD. Most people are diagnosed in their 40s or 50s. Obesity, particularly abdominal obesity (as opposed to fat around the hips and thighs) is common in fatty liver disease. People with suspected NAFLD should have other possible causes evaluated, especially viral hepatitis (types B and C), hemochromatosis and autoimmune hepatitis. Simple fatty liver is a benign condition; however, some people will develop the more serious condition non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Seventy percent of people with NASH are obese, and up to 75 percent have Type 2 diabetes. NASH without treatment can lead to fibrosis and even cirrhosis of the liver. Your body mass index is 27, so you are considered overweight, not obese. Still, I would recommend gradually losing 10 pounds or so. I also would recommend that you continue to drink very moderately or not at all. Exercise also can help. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 77, female and in great health except for being diagnosed with achalasia. I know it is rare, and I was happy to find out why my digestive system had discomfort. Do yoga twists or shoulder stands worsen this? It seems worse when I do these. -- E.H. ANSWER: Achalasia is a disease of abnormal movement in the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food from the back of your throat to the stomach. It is caused by damage to the nerves in the esophagus, possibly from destruction by the body’s immune system. Because of the nerve damage, the food gets stuck in the esophagus, leading to difficulty swallowing and vomiting of undigested food. Both solids and liquids are affected, as opposed to esophageal cancer, in which the problem is mostly solids. Gravity helps us swallow, so being upside down will make gravity work against you, and I would expect the condition to worsen with yoga positions that turn the esophagus upside down. I wouldn’t recommend those types of positions, especially since they may cause or worsen vomiting. Treatment of achalasia should be done by an expert in the condition, and may include dilation of the esophagus, injection with Botox into the muscle or surgery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Our sincerest thanks to the S. Byron Volunteer Firefighter who came to our rescue around 11pm on Christmas Eve. We had just struck an 8 point buck that totaled our truck on Rt. 33 in Bergen. Not only did you stay with us until the sheriff arrived, you offered to take us home to Brockport. We didn’t get your name but we will always remember your kindness.

Thank you to the person who, in a random act of kindness, paid our breakfast bill at Critics on December 19th. It was truly a surprise. Please know that we have paid it forward. Happy New Year! May you be blessed with health, happiness & rewarded for your kindness.

Thank you so much to the wonderful couple who surprised us by buying our dinners on Thursday, December 17th! We had just come from the funeral parlor and your kindness and generosity truly brightened our day and touched our hearts. Thank You! God Bless you both!

This is intended for the person who complained about the soccer game and being unfair. I honestly do not know who you’re talking to, but if you do not like the way the other team plays soccer then get your child off the field. It seems to me that you want to make sure your child does not get hurt. If that’s the case then make him a ballerina and dress him in a tutu. I am not trying to agree with the other team, but when you play sports, it’s for fun yes, but it’s competition too! I played soccer, ice hockey and football; when we got down and dirty no one complained. In closing, grow up, stop being a sissy and let your child play the game! To the person who shot our cat in November: You caused our family emotional pain and a very large pile of vet bills (which no one needs at the holidays). Also, much time was spent caring for our pet that may never fully recover. I want people to know pellet guns are not toys and injuring pets with them is animal cruelty and it is a crime. Get a head-start on tax season The dawn of a new calendar year often marks the end of the sometimes hectic holiday season. This time of year marks a return to normalcy for many families, as the kids go back to school and parents return to work. The beginning of January also serves as a great time to start preparing for tax season. While the deadline to file returns may be several months away, getting a head-start allows men and women the chance to organize their tax documents so they aren’t racing against a deadline come April. The following are a handful of ways to start preparing for your returns now. • Find last year’s return. You will need information from last year’s return in order to file this year, so find last year’s return and print it out if you plan to hire a professional to work on your return. • Gather dependents’ information. While you might know your own Social Security number by heart, if you have dependents, you’re going to need their information as well. New parents or adults who started serving as their elderly parents’ primary caretakers over the last year will need their kids’ and their folks’ social security numbers. If you do not have these numbers upon filing, your return will likely be delayed and you might even be denied potentially substantial tax credits. • Gather your year-end financial statements. If you spent the last year investing, then you will have to pay taxes on any interest earned. Interest earned on the majority of savings accounts is also taxable, so gather all of

your year-end financial statements from your assorted accounts in one place. Doing so will make filing your return, whether you do it yourself or work with a professional, go more quickly. • Speak with your mortgage lender. Homeowners should receive forms documenting their mortgage interest payments for the last year, as the money paid in interest on your home or homes is tax deductible. If these forms are not received in a timely manner, speak with your lender. You might even be able to download them from your lender’s secure website. • Make a list of your charitable contributions. Charitable contributions, no matter how small, are tax deductible. While it’s easiest to maintain a list of all charitable donations you make as the year goes on, if you have not done that, then you can make one now. Look for receipts of all contributions, contacting any charities you donated to if you misplaced any receipts. • Book an appointment with your tax preparation specialist now. As April 15 draws closer, tax preparers’ schedules get busier and busier. The earlier you book your appointment, the more likely you are to get a favorable time for that meeting. In addition, if you have gathered all of the information you need by early February, then booking your appointment early means you can file earlier and receive any return you might be eligible for that much quicker. Tax season might not be right around the corner, but it’s never too early to start preparing your return. Hobbies for the golden years W hen deciding on a hobby, you can first take an inventory of your skills and interests. If you have alw ays been handy around w ood and construction, perhaps a w oodw orking hobby w ill be enjoyable and also may w ork as a source of income revenue. Other activities that require the use of the hands and mind include knitting, needlepoint, painting, puzzles, quilting, scrapbooking, and crocheting. These can keep the mind active and improve dexterity and fine motor skills.

W e w ould like to thank everyone “Great actions are not always true sons of great and mighty resolutions…”

~ Samuel Johnson This is the season for great and mighty resolutions. We analyze the nature of our lives and the direction they are taking, and decide how we could make improvements. We resolve to do better, either by eliminating some habit that is unworthy of us or by developing a practice that will enrich our lives. Johnson tells us that we also may be inspired to great action by circumstance rather than by resolution. When an opportunity arises, we may rise to the occasion with acts that do us credit and without the benefit of planning or high resolve. Arrangements made prior to need may include the assurance that adequate financing will be available. Our entire staff wishes all of our friends a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

for all the prayers, cards, foods and gifts that we received at the time of our loss. We especially would like to thank Jeff Deragon, our church family, dear friends, & Mark Greenlaw for the wonderful tribute to Gus.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.
