Stretching Pet Food While in Quarantine

“Hello, my name is Pudge! I came from a farm, and can you tell why I’m named Pudge from my furry face? I love to eat popcorn when I’m given treats.

Every day at 5:10pm when Vince walks in, I stand on my wee little legs, anticipating him to walk by and pet me on my head. My favorite treats are carrots, apples, and romaine lettuce. I started off as a tiny guinea pig, and now I’ve grown into a football-sized piggy. I’m currently 5.5 years old, and Vince hopes I live as long as he does.”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Because I was possibly exposed to COVID-19 at the grocery store where I work, I have to stay home for 14 days. About three days into my quarantine, I realized that the dog food for my mixed-breed dog “Corky” was running low. I don’t have any family nearby, and I don’t want to make my co-workers nervous by asking them to bring a bag of dog food over.

My family and I are currently quarantined, too, and we’re finding online ordering of staples and pet food to be challenging.

Take stock of exactly how much dry dog food you have left -- literally measure it out cup by cup into a container. Divide the total cups by the number of scoops per day that you give your dog.

If the bag has less dry food than you’ll need for 11 more days, you can stretch it out and make sure Corky gets enough calories by combining his dry food with fresh food. Unseasoned, cooked rice and oatmeal, veggies like peas and carrots (but not onions, garlic, grapes or avocado), chicken, beef or salmon (unseasoned) are all safe and healthy options. Replace half to all the kibble per meal with a fresh alternative.

Many communities are also spinning up “helping hand” services. Check the website of your local government, online community pages and even the local library’s site to find out if you can contact someone to drop off dog food.

1 regular size package Eckrich Smoked Sausage 1 small red onion, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 red bell pepper, seeded, cut into 1-inch pieces 6 wooden skewers, 10 inches long 1/2 cup Italian salad dressing, divided 6 bolillo or sandwich rolls, split 1 avocado, cut into 1/2-inch thick slices 1/4 cup cilantro leaves Heat grill to medium-high.

Cut sausage into 1/2-inch thick slices. Thread sausage, onion and bell peppers alternately onto skewers. Brush 1/4 cup salad dressing on skewered sausage and vegetables.

Grill until sausage is golden brown and vegetables are crisp-tender, about 10 minutes, turning once.

Brush remaining salad dressing on rolls. Fill rolls with grilled sausage and vegetables. Divide avocado and cilantro onto each.

Tip: To broil sausage rather than grill, heat broiler to medium-high, follow the same skewer preparation instructions and broil about 10 minutes, or until sausage is golden brown and vegetables are crisp-tender.

Trip to Supermarket Brings New Challenges It occurred to me the other day that I haven’t been eating right.

It’s been difficult to find food in my stores, and it’s been difficult to work up the courage to go out, fearing I might get too close to someone who is sick.

It also occurred to me that not eating right was bad for my immune system, should I need to fight off an illness.

I began going out just before my nearest store closed at night, dashing in for one or two items, using the self-checkout, and fleeing out the door with my haul. That’s assuming my two items were actually on the shelves.

But now, in the nick of time, two stores have restarted pickup service, after having cancelled it for over a month. I place the pickup order online, select a time slot two days in advance, and drive there to have my groceries put in the car. It works, even if there are a lot of substitutions of items and a few items out of stock.

Here’s a thought: Do you have a supplemental Medicare policy or Medicare Advantage? Does it cover meal delivery service, perhaps Meals on Wheels? Some do. Coverage might only apply at certain times (if you’ve just had surgery or have a medical condition), but a lot of rules are changing now. It wouldn’t hurt to check your policy. Easy ways to volunteer… and give back to your community Millions of people across the globe volunteer every day. Without the selfless efforts of volunteers, many charities would be forced to cease operations. In fact, a 2017 study from the charitable community membership organization Independent Sector estimated that the labor provided by volunteers is worth roughly $193 billion per year in the United States alone.

With so much to gain from volunteering, it’s no wonder that so many people across the globe volunteer. According to the United Nations Volunteers program, global estimates place the number of worldwide volunteers at 970 million. That’s nearly three times the population of the United States and more than 26 times the population of Canada in 2018.

It’s never been easier to volunteer and begin helping your community. Adults and children who want to join the nearly one billion strong global volunteering community need not look far to get involved. The Corporation for National Community Service notes that the following are some easy ways to volunteer in your community. · Serve meals at a local shelter or community kitchen. · Sign up to work as a tutor or mentor with a local afterschool program. · Help adults find the right professional opportunities by hosting a résumé writing/review workshop and conducting practice interview sessions. · Work in conjuction with a local food pantry to organize a food donation drive. · Volunteer to help the environment by working with local, state, or national park services to beautify parks and/or a local community garden. · Work with a local emergency response organization to produce and distribute disaster-preparedness kits. · Help fellow community members save money by collecting and sharing information about free tax-preparation services. · Read to students or seniors- contact a local community or senior center. · Volunteer at an animal shelter.

DOWN HOME APPLE PIE POPCORN Yield: 10 cups 3 tablespoons melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 8 cups popped popcorn 1 cup dried apple chips, broken into large pieces 1/4 cup toffee bits Heat oven to 300 F. Whisk melted butter with vanilla. Toss brown sugar with cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.

Toss popcorn with butter mixture.

Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar mixture. Stir. Transfer to baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Sprinkle apple chips and toffee bits over top. Bake 15 minutes, or until toffee bits start to melt. Cool before serving.

Tip: Add chopped pecans for extra crunch.

ANSWER: There remains a stigma against people with genital herpes, which is almost always caused by herpes simplex virus type 2. However, most people with genital herpes will not have major disruptions to their lives provided they take some precautions.

First off, a person with herpes simplex virus type 1 (about half of the population between ages 18-49, higher in older people) or HSV-2 (about 12% of the same population) certainly can donate blood. Second, being exposed doesn’t guarantee infection. Third, blood testing is not perfect. Fourth, getting any kind of sexually transmitted infection from a toilet seat is very unlikely. Herpes viruses have a very difficult time getting through intact skin, which is why most exposures come through mucus membranes, especially of the genitals and mouth.

There is a type of herpes (usually HSV-1, occasionally HSV-2) in wrestlers, called herpes gladiatorum or “mat herpes,” and it can be transmitted from person to person through skin-to-skin contact, especially if the skin is raw or chafed.

Once a person has herpes of either variety, there is no cure. The virus stays in the nerve cells. There is extensive work being done both on preventing transmission and curing existing infections, but herpes viruses are very good at escaping the immune system. This makes herpes difficult to treat.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Should a person be concerned about serious side effects from long-term use of Claritin-D? My son has been using the medication continuously for about nine years. He has had allergy shots, which were minimally helpful. He cannot use nasal rinses or sprays because they cause nosebleeds. He does have some sleeping problems, but since he’s been taking Claritin-D for so long, it’s hard to tell if that medication is the cause. -- M.S. ANSWER: Claritin-D is a combination of the antihistamine loratadine and the decongestant pseudoephedrine. Loratadine is considered safe in most people. Pseudoephedrine is safe for younger people, but it can raise blood pressure and pulse, and in older men, can cause urinary symptoms. He might try plain Claritin, which is just the loratadine, and save the Claritin-D for his worst days. Less pseudoephedrine is probably better. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your comments to I.T. with interest, as I had my gallbladder removed way back in 1968. I feel you left out a side effect that follows the procedure for many patients: the “dump” syndrome, or diarrhea. This result has plagued me and several others for years. I found some relief by taking cholestyramine before eating. -- J.C. ANSWER: That’s a very good point, and one I did not highlight.

“Dumping syndrome” refers to bile being delivered to the intestine suddenly, causing diarrhea. Some people are just a piece of work. They think they own the neighborhood. They monitor everything...and everyone. Since they have no friends or family that really want anything to do with them, they take on the job of poking their noses in everybody else’s business. That makes them think that they are important, when in actuality, no one wants to be around them, nor do they respect them. Every neighborhood has someone like that, I guess. As hard as it may be, do not let it bother you. They love it when it does. Stay well.

Regarding Painted Rocks. I saw one of them the other day, and it was so adorable! But from more than 10 feet away, it does look like another piece of trash. I agree that, at the park while enjoying nature, it is nice to see nature and not what looks like trash on the ground, even if it is cute close up.

BriPen Senior Rides was started in 2017 and is sponsored by the Town of Penfield. It is a wholly volunteer, donation-based service that seniors, without any private transportation, may request one round trip ride or two one-way rides per week. Salt, grim e and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical w inter. Drivers w ill not get far this spring and sum m er w ithout tires in good repair, w hich is w hy tire m aintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist.

Now is the tim e to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. M any tires indicate the recom m ended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidew alls.

Cold tem peratures m ay cause tires to deflate a little. Driving on im properly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires w hen they are cold for the m ost accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also w ill im prove fuel econom y.

Exam ine the tires for tread w ear. Any uneven or abnorm al tread w ear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the w heels realigned at the very least. M echanics m ay recom m end rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 m iles, or about every six m onths for the average driver. Wheel realignm ent m ay be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road.

Drivers m ay discover extrem e tread w ear, bulges or even cracks in the sidew all during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s tim e to replace the tires.

enesee County couple, Becky Bartz and her husband, are foster parents in Batavia. Just over a year ago, in February 2019, Becky Bartz started the Foster Closet to help area foster families provide clothing and other necessities for the children they fostered. She knows firsthand just how much such a closet is needed.

“I have been a certified foster parent for about two and a half years,”Becky shared. “My husband and I realized just how little these children often come with. We fostered many children for short-term stays, and the need for such a closet became apparent fairly quickly. You never know what children may be coming your way and what they may or may not have.”

So, Becky created her Foster Closet and began gathering donations from people in her community. “We started collecting clothing, including socks and underwear, baby supplies, towels, wash clothes, burp rags, shoes-the essentials,” she explained. “Now, I know that if, for example, a six-year-old little boy is sent to us, we have everything we need for him, and that is what I want for these other foster parents, as well.”

There is always need. “When children are taken into foster care, the process can be very quick,” stated Becky. “Kids often need the basics like clothes, possibly even shoes, winter coats, snow pants, hairbrushes, toothbrushes-things that you and I take for granted. I go through the donations myself and keep only clean, unstained clothing because if I would not give an item to my best friend to wear, I will not give it to these children. They deserve good clothes, too.”

The impact of being given these items when they arrive is undeniable. “If they get a new pair of shoes or a shirt, they are ecstatic about that, and it warms and breaks your heart at the same time. In general, these kids do not have things that are their own like a stuffed animal or a Becky Bartz’s Foster Closet blanket. Now, they have an item that includes baby gear! belongs to them, that will go with them from their starting point to their ending point and provide a sense of security through all these transitions.”

“We also have a group called the Quilting Guild which is a group of women who make blankets and quilts which they donate to be sent with these children. That way, when they go home, I can give them a quilt to keep wherever they go, something they can say, “This is mine, and no one is going to take it away from me.’”

Along with providing for and reaching out to children who enter foster care, Becky also hopes to ease these transitions for foster parents. It seems to be working. “The Foster Closet has meant a lot to the families we have been able to help; it has been a relief,” said Becky. “Our home finder for Genesee County has shared about us, and our Facebook page mentions this, but my word of mouth can only go so far. I want people

to know that if they are in Genesee County and have their board certification to foster, I can help them, even if they just need one thing. Becky also pointed out that foster families willing to help these children in need are in short supply, as well. “Our need for foster parents is always great,” she stated. “Even if you are not a foster parent, you can provide temporary respite for those who are, which is so helpful. Foster parents take in children out of the goodness of our hearts, but we need a break, and we have to find someone certified to watch the children we foster.”

SHRIMP POTATO PATTIES Makes about 2 dozen 6 medium-size red potatoes, peeled and quartered 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter 1 cup finely chopped yellow onions 1/4 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup seeded and chopped red bell peppers 1/2 cup seeded and chopped green bell peppers 1/2 cup seeded and chopped yellow bell peppers 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon Tabasco brand pepper sauce 2 pounds medium-size shrimp, peeled, deveined and coarsely ground in a food processor 2 large eggs, well beaten 1/4 cup chopped freshly parsley leaves 1/2 cup peanut oil 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1. In a large saucepan, boil the potatoes in lightly salted water to cover until fork tender. Remove from the heat and drain. Transfer them to a large mixing bowl and mash with a fork. Let cool.

2. Melt the butter over medium heat in a medium-size skillet. Add the onions, celery, bell peppers, salt, cayenne, black pepper, and Tabasco, and cook, stirring, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook, stirring until they turn pink, about 3 minutes.

Remove from the heat and let cool for about 5 minutes.

3. Combine the shrimp mixture with the potato mixture. Add the eggs and parsley and mix well. Let cool for 10 minutes.

4. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

5. Form the shrimp mixture into patties, using 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the mixture, depending on what size you desire, and pat lightly with the flour. Cook two to three at a time in the hot oil until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side.

Drain on paper towels. Serve hot.
