HEARTY AND HEALTHY CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATO CHILI (NAPSI)—Here’s a new take on an old favorite. Loaded with fiber, vitamins and minerals, it’s easy to make. Serve with an array of garnishes, allowing diners to customize their bowls.

California Sweet Potato Chili Serves 6 2 T oil 1 lb ground beef, turkey, chicken or pork Salt and pepper 1 onion, diced 1 red bell pepper, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 T chili powder 1 T smoked paprika 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp dried oregano ¼ tsp ground cayenne pepper ¼ tsp ground cinnamon 2 14.5-oz cans diced tomatoes 2 c low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth 2 15-oz cans kidney or pinto beans (with their juices) 1½ lb orange- or yellow-fleshed sweet potatoes, or a combo, diced In large saucepan or small stockpot over medium-high, warm 1 T oil. Add meat and cook until brown. Add salt and pepper, transfer to bowl, set aside. Return to medium-high. Add 1 T oil. Add onion and bell pepper, cook until crisp-tender, 2 minutes.

Add garlic, spices, and 1 tsp salt and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Simmer until sweet potatoes are tender, 25 to 30 minutes.

Chickpeas are loaded with protein and fiber, making them a healthy addition to just about anyone’s diet. For those who want the nutritious pack chickpeas can provide but are worried that chickpeas fall short in the flavor department, you can enjoy the best of both worlds by cooking up the following recipe for “Spiced Chickpeas” from “Crossroads: Extraordinary Recipes from the Restaurant That Is Reinventing Vegan Cuisine” (Artisan) by Tal Ronnen, Scot Jones and Serafina Magnussen.

Spiced Chickpeas Serves 4 2 cups dried chickpeas (garbanzo beans), soaked overnight in cold water, or two 15-ounce cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/2 teaspoon cayenne 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 6 tablespoons grapeseed oil 1/2 shallot, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced Juice of 1/2 lemon 1 tablespoon dry sherry 1 cup sauce Chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley Preheat the oven to 425 F. Combine the chickpeas, cumin, red pepper flakes, cayenne, salt, and black pepper in a mixing bowl, drizzle with 1/4 cup of the oil, and toss to coat. Spread the chickpeas out on a baking sheet in a single layer and roast, shaking the pan from time to time, for 20 to 25 minutes, until the chickpeas are firm and dry. Set aside to cool. (The roasted chickpeas can be prepared a couple of hours in advance, covered, and held at room temperature.)

Put a large sauté pan over medium heat and add the remaining 2 tablespoons oil. When the oil is hot, stir in the shallot and garlic and cook, stirring, until soft, about 2 minutes. Add the chickpeas, tossing to heat through. Stir in the lemon juice, sherry and marinara sauce and cook, stirring, until the chickpeas are well coated and the sauce is hot, about 2 minutes.

Mound the chickpeas in a shallow serving bowl, top with chopped parsley and serve warm.

IMPLANTS THAT JUST TOUCH THE SURFACE Because of bone “resorption” (shrinkage), not all patients have enough bone in their jaws to accept a tooth implant. Normally, an implant is embedded in the jaw, where it will integrate with the surrounding bone, and eventually hold the prosthetic tooth (or teeth) in place. If there is not enough bone underlying the gums to receive the implant, bone may be grafted to the implant site. If grafting is not a feasible option, a “subperiosteal” implant may be used. This type of implant is a metal framework placed beneath the gums where it sits atop the bone, somewhat like a saddle. A subperiosteal implant must be custommade to fit the contours of an individual’s jaw.

Thanks to technological advances in detection and new treatment approaches, women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer can opt to keep their breast with less invasive surgery and with breastconserving treatments. In fact, the American Cancer Society estimates that 59 percent of women with an early breast cancer diagnosis (Stage 1 or 2) undergo breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) versus 36 percent of women who decide to have a total mastectomy. Research has shown that breast-conserving surgery followed by radiation therapy is as effective as a mastectomy in decreasing the risk of local cancer recurrence for most women*.

“One way that breast-conserving surgery is now easier is due to a new innovation in breast cancer treatment—SAVI SCOUT® Radar Localization.

This resolves one of the most difficult aspects of breast conservation surgery by eliminating the need to place a wire inside of the breast tissue to locate a tumor,” said Dr. Barry Rosen, Chairman of Department of Surgery at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Chicago; and Assistant Professor, University of Illinois College of Medicine. “Many of my patients who have undergone a procedure with SCOUT® are impressed with the benefits, including shorter procedure times and decreased anxiety.”

Prior to 2015, surgeons generally relied on wire localization to locate a tumor during a lumpectomy procedure. With wire localization, a radiologist guides a thin, hooked wire through the skin and into the tumor on the day of surgery. The surgeon then uses the wire to identify the area of tissue targeted for removal. This resulted in long days of surgery for women, with two procedures performed on the same day. With SCOUT, a tiny reflector, the size of a grain of rice, is placed at the tumor site at any time during the patient’s treatment and well in advance of surgery.

The SCOUT Wire-Free Radar Breast Localization System uses safe, nonradioactive, radar technology to provide real-time and precise surgical guidance during the surgery.

The ability to precisely locate tumors increases the probability of complete cancer removal and reduces the likelihood of needing follow-up surgery, allowing any additional treatments to occur sooner. In addition, the ability to strategically plan the incision may result in better cosmetic outcomes.

SCOUT is also used to effectively localize lymph nodes and tumors prior to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (chemotherapy administered prior to surgery) and can be used with any type of imaging over the course of a patient’s care. More than 350 hospitals have implemented the SCOUT System, and to date, over 45,000 women have had a wire-free localization experience.

Hydrogen peroxide As people clear isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide.

The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well.

Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 30, 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward signs a treaty with Russia to buy Alaska for $7 million. Despite the bargain price of roughly 2 cents an acre, the Alaskan purchase was ridiculed as "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's icebox."

On March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower is dedicated in Paris in a ceremony presided over by Gustave Eiffel, its designer, and French Prime Minister Pierre Tirard. At 984 feet, the Eiffel Tower remained the world's tallest man-made structure until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930.

On April 1, 1970, President Richard Nixon signs legislation officially banning cigarette ads on television and radio. Nixon, who was an avid pipe smoker, supported the legislation at the increasing insistence of public health advocates.

Healthy eating options for seniors “Let food be thy medicine” is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions.

For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-the-counter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-and-over demographic.

According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful. · Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care. · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week.

DOWN HOME APPLE PIE POPCORN Yield: 10 cups 3 tablespoons melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 8 cups popped popcorn 1 cup dried apple chips, broken into large pieces 1/4 cup toffee bits Heat oven to 300 F. Whisk melted butter with vanilla. Toss brown sugar with cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.

Toss popcorn with butter mixture.

Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar mixture. Stir. Transfer to baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Sprinkle apple chips and toffee bits over top. Bake 15 minutes, or until toffee bits start to melt. Cool before serving.

Tip: Add chopped pecans for extra crunch.

Woody & Friends is a Remarkable Local Legacy

W

oody and Friends is a local group that plays nursing homes and assisted living facilities as well as the VA in Batavia, NY. For all intents and purposes, Woody and Friends is Rick Nicholson.

Rick Nicholson has been with Woody and Friends since its inception all the way back in 1981 when Rick Nicholson formed the group in Brockport, NY. Many of the group members have changed faces over the years, but the one constant has been Rick Nicholson.

Rick Nicholson is a superb guitarist. I had many discussions with him regarding music over the years, and one thing I know just by talking to Rick is that he loves The Moody Blues. In fact, I believe that Rick’s main musical influence is The Moody Blues. I also am a huge fan of the band because The Moody Blues have a sound that just can’t be duplicated.

The early Moody Blues, which was led by Denny Laine, was around from 1964 to 1966. It consisted of Denny Laine, Clint Warwicke, Graeme Edge, Mike Pinder and Ray Thomas. This was the first incarnation of The Moody Blues, and with this first incarnation of The Moody Blues, the band scored a huge hit with the song “Go Now” which was released in 1965. “Go Now” was originally written by Bessie Banks. After “Go Now,” The Moody Blues struggled to make the charts. Then, in 1966, Denny Laine and Clint Warwicke left The Moody Blues and, to replace both Denny Laine and Clint Warwicke, The Moody Blues hired Justin Hayward and John Lodge.

Soon, The Moody Blues would focus entirely on a lush orchestrated sound when Denny Laine led the Moody Blues. It was with this sound that the Moody Blues scored their most popular hits such as “Nights in White Satin” and “Tuesday Afternoon” among many other mega hits that represented The Moody Blues’ second incarnation.

I’ll never forget when Rick Nicholson gave me his only copy of a great The Moody Blues CD that originally was released in 1969. It was of course “On the Threshold of a Dream” which is just as fantastic as when it was first released.

Still, Rick can play all different kinds of music, not just The Moody Blues. A lot of times, he and Woody and Friends have sing-a-longs when they visit the places they go to, such as the VA in Batavia. Rick and his band will sing excellent versions of songs such as “To Catch the Wind” by Donovan, “Galveston” by Glen Campbell, “The Camptown Races” by Don Gibson, “Stand by your Man”

by Tammy Wynette, and “Girl” by The Beatles, among many other musical artists that Woody and Friends cover and cover well.

Incidentally, when I was talking to Rick Nicholson about Glen Campbell, he said what made that trademark booming sound in Campbell's song “Galveston” was that Glen Campbell actually used a compressor with his

guitar to create it. I thought that little tidbit of information was fascinating.

Nicholson's Woody and Friends presently consists of Rick playing with two other musicians, a harmony singer by the name of Bonnie and an excellent rhythm guitarist by the name of Dennis. I always enjoyed Rick Nicholson's and Woody and Friends' music because I always found it engaging and fun. So next time you’re at a local assisted living facility, a local nursing home or even the VA in Batavia among the many other places they play, maybe you will hear Woody and Friends and realize they are not just a good band, but they are, in fact, a great band. This is why, in my view, Woody and Friends are a local legend because their music will never go out of style.

Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment.

For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working.

“It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.”

It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.”

Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts.

“I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.”
