Phlebotomy Technician Program

This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare. This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office.

Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 143 hours of classroom lecture and hands on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider.

The phlebotomist is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain patient's blood specimens by venipuncture and microcollection for testing purposes. Phlebotomists are employed throughout the healthcare system including hospitals, neighborhood health centers, medical group practices, HMO's, public health facilities, veteran hospitals, insurance carriers and in other healthcare settings. The demand for phlebotomy technicians has increased substantially with the overall complexity of healthcare services and the risks of infectious disease.

Clinical Externship: This program includes a 160 hour clinical externship opportunity. To be eligible for the clinical, students must successfully complete the 143 hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements.

Note: There is no outside externship rotation included with this program. Several state and national certification exams exist to test the competency of aspiring phlebotomy technicians.

National Certification: Students who complete this program will have the opportunity to pursue the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Exam.

GREEK SALAD IN JARS Courtesy of Simply Recipes • Makes: 4 salads Salad Dressing: Salads: 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/4 medium red onion, thinly sliced 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus additional, to taste 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved pinch of black pepper, plus additional, to taste 1/2 large English cucumber, sliced 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 yellow or orange bell pepper, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 teaspoon honey 3/4 cup California black ripe olives 5 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup (4 ounces) crumbled feta cheese 4 pint-size canning jars with lids 4 small handfuls fresh baby spinach or other dark, leafy greens 4 pita bread rounds, halved (optional) To prepare dressing: In small bowl, whisk together vinegar, salt, pepper, oregano and honey.

Gradually whisk in oil. Taste. Add additional salt and pepper, if desired.

Divide dressing between four pint jars.

To assemble salads: Divide onion between four jars. Divide tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, olives and feta cheese between jars. Pack remaining space with spinach, compressing leaves slightly.

Secure lids and refrigerate up to two days.

To serve: Empty salads into bowls and toss with dressing. Serve with pita bread.

Cancer Treatments Kill Not Cure, Friends Say

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a relative with cancer who is about to begin multiple therapeutic interventions. My friends tell me that all cancer treatments are toxic and kill people instead of curing them, and that I should tell my relative to look into other forms of treatment. What do you suggest I do? -- K.C. ANSWER: There are hundreds of different types of cancer, and they vary widely in their capacity to grow and damage the individual, and in their response to treatment. For decades, this has meant mostly surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, but now includes newer treatments, including immune therapy. While not all cancers are curable in everybody, every year brings sometimes incremental, sometimes dramatic improvements in life expectancy for individual cancers. Some cancers that were rapidly fatal even a few years ago are now curable in most cases. Getting the right diagnosis quickly and getting to an expert in treating that cancer are critical to having the best chance of a good outcome.

Treating some cancers remains difficult, and in many cases the treatments have significant side effects. Surgery scars may impair function, and chemotherapy can cause severe symptoms and may permanently affect body systems, as can radiation. It can be very hard on a family member observing these treatments, and if his or her loved one nevertheless succumbs eventually to the cancer, it is understandable to think the suffering the person went through was in vain.

So, while I understand where your friends may be coming from, their well-meaning advice, based on bad experiences possibly a long time ago, might cause your relative with cancer to delay the potentially lifesaving treatments that are available now. A study published in July 2018 showed that people who use alternative medical treatments for cancer are less likely to be cured and have a shorter life expectancy.

My advice is that you encourage your relative to find the most expert cancer treatment available. It’s up to your relative to accept the recommendations of the expert, but delaying the best available treatment in order to consider unproven therapies is likely to result in harm.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had the same problem forever: I don’t understand why buttermilk coffee creamer seems to get outdated faster than regular creamer. Does the butter in it have anything to do with this? -- C.H. ANSWER: Buttermilk doesn’t have butter in it. It was so named because it was originally made with what was left after separating butter from the unhomogenized cream that had been allowed to ferment with airborne bacteria, making it slightly acidic. Modern cultured buttermilk is made from pasteurized, homogenized milk, usually 1% to 2% fat, and inoculated with healthy bacteria, which makes lactic acid from the sugars in the milk. This acid makes buttermilk resistant to the unhealthy bacteria that causes spoilage.

It also causes a slight sour taste, which some people like and others don’t.

Commercial heavy cream, and coffee creamers made from heavy cream, have a very long shelf life largely because they are pasteurized at ultra-high temperatures, so they last even longer than buttermilk. The high fat content also retards bacteria growth.

Both buttermilk-based and cream-based creamers will stay good longer than their expiration date. A poem about saying goodbye to your four-legged friend

GRYFFIN That border collie stare, peering into my soul, crossing the lines of communication where no words are necessary-how well you knew me, tolerated me, like a besotted lover but ever more faithful.

Over the years, as the house emptied, we formed an alliance you and I syncing our gaits, comfortable in our routine.

We watched each other’s hair turn gray, more amused than alarmed, each night holding the inevitable at bay with our playtime antics: hide and go seek (you never did learn to check the front coat closet) and running the inside track in the living room-catch me if you can! --an amusing sight, I’m sure, for anyone passing by the picture window.

Immortal youngsters we, puppies at heart, until that Monday morning when you and my world suddenly collapsed.

At the vets, you lay quietly, obediently, still the gentleman you always were, chin resting heavily on white paws (four, like socks), a tired sphinx awaiting the quick needle prick-too quick!-me, caressing and crooning, tears flowing, your betrayer, Judas with a kiss.

Four quick huffs, your familiar warm breath gracing my hand, then nothing.

I wait, unsure.

Those eyes--still liquid, still warm, still lingering on my face.

Border collie stare, piercing my soul.

my husband and me to never including us in any holiday... ever! My husband and I have tried to rise above her ignorance by having them for holidays and birthdays, but it’s become too uncomfortable to keep having them over.

She leaves our home, and she starts trouble again. I feel horrible about this. It’s amazing to us that with such a small family, everyone can’t just stop the nasty words and move forward. Life is too short. Everyone is in their 70’s.

February 2nd around 11 am [local store] in [local town] parking lot, I was waiting for two people to go past the handicap spot up front. I had the front end of my car pointed in when an older couple came around

the corner and pulled in, and he laughed as he put his handicap sticker on his windshield. I looked at him like, “Are you really going to do this?” If he had manners, he would have seen that I don’t have a handicap sticker to hang up. I have permanent handicap plates.

I am also a senior citizen but with manners, so I didn’t say anything. If they would have watched, they would have seen that I must use a cane or walker to get around or grab a cart if one is close by.

I have had two major back surgeries and 18 shots so far in my back. I was hurt by the lack of manners people have nowadays. I hope they had a good shopping day and can live with being meanmannered seniors.

CLARKSON The Clarkson Historical Society will host a presentation by the Buffalo Soldiers Wednesday 4 March, 7:00 pm, Clarkson Academy, 8343 W. Ridge Rd. The Buffalo Soldiers Presentation Team will give an overview of the History of African American soldiers after the Civil War. They were known as “Buffalo Soldiers”, a name given to them by native Americans on the western plains. They also fought in the Spanish- American War and were deployed to Mexico to hunt for Pancho Villa in 1916. They went on to become some of the first park rangers in our national parks.

(NAPS)—You may have heard the terms—winter blues, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Pattern. No matter what you call it, with approximately 17.3 million adults in the U.S. experiencing seasonal depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, feeling gloomy this time of year isn’t uncommon—but it can be overcome.

The Problem - Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Pattern (formerly called SAD) can affect anyone of any age. While January and February are the typical peak months for the disorder, symptoms can persist through April, according to Mental Health America.

Doctor’s Advice - When that feeling of sadness persists for several weeks, it’s time to take action, according to Dr. Desreen Dudley, a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Behavioral Health Provider of Therapeutic Services for Teladoc Health. “If someone has a few days of feeling low, that’s normal and typically nothing to worry about. It’s when the feeling lingers for weeks and people lose interest in daily activities and suffer persistent negative thoughts, that lend a stronger basis for Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Affective Pattern diagnosis,” she says.

What To Watch For - Other symptoms she warns about are: • Change in appetite • Change in sleep pattern • Decreased energy • Decreased concentration • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt • An inability to think, concentrate, or finish tasks at work or school • Thinking about suicide, self-harm, or death

Dr. Dudley contends individuals already struggling with depressive disorders are susceptible to SAD patterns. For older Americans, a Vitamin D deficiency can exacerbate low moods. On the other end of the spectrum, she has worked with newly independent college students who find SAD a heavy burden and say their new responsibilities of classes, exams and jobs can compound their depression. For some, they may be sleeping in more and further limiting their exposure to sunlight.

What To Do - In addition to considering therapy, such as virtual care, which is available on your terms and from any location you choose, Dr. Dudley recommends: • Avoiding or cutting back on alcohol and other addictive substances • Eating healthfully—more lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and eliminating sugar • Daily exercise at least 30 minute a day (walking counts) • Yoga or meditation • Learning about and trying light therapy • Regularly surrounding yourself with those you enjoy being around.

When To Seek Help - According to a recent global study conducted by Ipsos MORI for Teladoc Health, individuals often recognize when they’re struggling, but even so, over a third of the respondents who have had one mental health episode admitted to not seeking professional help. The reason? For many, it’s often the difficulty in finding mental health care.

“Thankfully, virtual care is becoming increasingly available as a source of convenient mental health care,” Dr. Dudley says. “It eliminates the traditional obstacles of in-person visits and has opened up access for anyone with a busy schedule, individuals who may have difficulty getting out of the house and students who may fear the stigma of walking into the campus mental health clinic.”

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day.

When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

Although residents of chilly climates come to expect the flakes and gathering snow mounds, some people never quite get used to the cleanup involved in keeping neighborhoods safe and accessible.

Elba Student Artwork Selected for Cover of the Rochester Auto Show

F

anny Venegas is a junior at Elba Central Schools and a first-year student in the Graphic Arts Program at the Batavia Career and Technical Education Center.

She recently submitted a design for the cover of the Rochester Automobile Dealers Association’s (RADA) Rochester Auto Show Program, and her design was selected as the winner.

Fanny was recently recognized by Juan Canto, Director of Training, Compliance, Recruitment and Placement for the RADA, and she was presented with a monetary award.

“Each year, the RADA invites students to design the program cover because it provides an excellent learning opportunity, allowing them to display their knowledge and skills that they learn in the Graphic Design classroom,” Canto said. “The student whose cover design is chosen gets to have their bio and picture included in the Auto Show book which thousands of people look at. This prestigious selection can be included in the student’s resumé as they look to attend college or find gainful employment.”

Gretchen Rosales is the Principal of Elba Junior/Senior High School. She noted how Fanny goes above and beyond in all she accomplishes.

“Fanny is a student who consistently goes above and beyond in all that she does. Not only does she participate in the Graphic Arts program at the Batavia CTE Center, but she also takes AP courses back at the Elba campus. She is a three-sport athlete, participating in cross country and indooroutdoor track,” Rosales said. “Fanny strives to always give more than 100 percent, and she exemplifies what it means to be an Elba Lancer.”

Doug Russo is Fanny’s Graphic Arts Instructor. He described how Fanny’s skill set has grown immensely since she first began in September.

“Fanny has gained a vast amount of experience in the graphic arts field. GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry.

Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.

Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it.

For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes.

“People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful.

Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools.

Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work.

Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent.

Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce.

Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience.

But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs.

Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories.

Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather.

Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity.

Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates.

Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.

The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur.

Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs some of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.
